The Horse and Farrier is a lovely, old pub. Full of character and atmosphere. Our room was a ground floor room in the recently refurbished Salutation Inn just across the road. Ours was a ground floor room which was fine except for the windows. They would have benefited from window film, as on raising the blinds in the morning I was staring straight at the neighbours and their dog across the road! Our two dogs were startled and so the barking began which no doubt woke everyone one else up.

The lack of privacy mentioned above. Window film would greatly improve the ground floor rooms privacy. I took one star off for this and for the dog hair in our room. Not ours as it belonged to a black dog and ours are blond.

Old fashioned but good hospitality

Breakfast was good. Location good.

We were disappointed to have been locked out of the hotel at only 10.35pm. Apparently they had closed because there was nobody in the bar. It would have been nice to have been warned that this may happen. There was a combination lock on the back door but nobody thought to give us the code just in case. We were fortunate that a member of staff was walking by just as we were going to the back door. After about 15-20 minutes a lady with a key arrived to let us in so it is to their credit that they did that for us. Apparently it had be known for people to have had to sleep in their cars in the past. It's a bit surprising that there didn't appear to be a member of staff onsite for the night. We thought that could have been a problem in the event of a fire. We were also surprised that the room wasn't made up after the first night. We had to ask for clean mugs and more toilet paper.
