About this house rental

Summary:

Our English basement apartment sits under the family rowhouse in Brookland, with its own entrance and its own keypad, so the whole place is yours from the moment you arrive. Two queen bedrooms and a queen sofa bed sleep six. There is free unrestricted parking on our block and the Rhode Island Ave Metro is 0.8 miles on foot. We live upstairs with our two kids, so on weekdays you will hear footsteps overhead around 7 to 8 in the morning and 6 to 8 in the evening, and we are away most weekends.

The Space:

The apartment is setup as a self-contained apartment, not a converted rec room. Both bedrooms have queen beds and there is a queen sofa bed in the living room, so six people fit comfortably. There is an apartment style kitchen with a stove, oven and dishwasher, and the appliances are small. There is a large washer and dryer in the unit to help with longer stays, and a TV with Netflix and Sling included. There is also a fully fenced back yard behind the house that you are welcome to use, which is a good spot for kids to run around after a day of walking the museums.

Brookland is a quiet residential pocket in northeast DC and it is the part of the city we chose for ourselves rather than a place we bought to rent out. Noyes Park is about five minutes on foot and the Franciscan Monastery gardens are a little further. There are restaurants and bars within walking distance. The Rhode Island Ave Metro is 0.8 miles away on the Red Line, the Capitol and the White House are around 3.5 miles away and accessible without a car.

Guest Access:

The entire apartment is yours, with its own entrance and a keypad code we send ahead of time, so there is no key handover and nothing to coordinate on arrival. Nothing inside is shared with us and we will not come in during your stay unless you ask us to. The one exception is the thermostat, which sits on the first floor of our house and runs the whole house, so message us any time with the temperature you want and we will set it for you. There is also an electric fireplace, fans and space heaters in the apartment to help regulate temperature.

The Neighborhood:

Brookland is a residential pocket in northeast DC, mostly rowhouses with front porches, and it is quieter at night than most of the city. The food has caught up in the last few years. Primrose is the nice french restaurant 2 blocks away. The Harp is the Irish pub, and there are two breweries nearby in Right Proper and The Public Option. A Trader Joe's opened on Monroe Street for whatever you forgot to pack.

Noyes Park is about five minutes on foot and the Franciscan Monastery gardens are a longer walk that is worth the trip.

We keep a binder in the apartment with our own favorite places around DC. The houses on our block sit close together, so we do ask that you keep things down outside late at night.

Getting Around:

The Rhode Island Ave Metro on the Red Line is 0.8 miles from the house, which most guests cover in 12 to 15 minutes on foot, and buses run nearby. From there the Capitol, the museums and the White House are all around 3.5 miles away and easy to reach without driving.

Street parking on our block is unrestricted and free, so you can leave a car anywhere nearby. We do ask that you not pull into our driveway or the back yard, and that you leave the neighbors' driveways clear.

Other Things to Note:

Getting in involves 12 steps up from the sidewalk and then 5 steps back down to the apartment door, so it is not a good fit if stairs are difficult for anyone in your group.

This is an English basement, so the ceilings run about 7 feet through most of the apartment, with two bulkheads at roughly 6 feet, one in the hallway to the bathroom and one at the door to the second bedroom. The HVAC unit sits in a closet inside the apartment and you can hear the fan when it runs.

Interaction with Guests:

We are around if you need us and easy to reach by message, which is usually the fastest way to get an answer about anything in the apartment or the neighborhood. We will say hello if we run into you out front, but we will otherwise leave you to your trip.

It was a great place to stay while we visited D.C.

We enjoyed our stay very much!! Great location, close to all DC attractions but nice not being right downtown. Quiet neighborhood with no problem with parking right in front of the place. Would definitely stay here again!!

The host was great and the luxury apartment was amazing. We felt very accommodated in a great location near so many things to do! When we checked in everything was beautiful and clean. We are definitely going to stay at this location again when we come back to DC! Truly amazing and we loved it. Very comfortable and cozy place.

The stay was ok, but my husband and boys had a difficult time navigating through the apartment because of their height. The apartment is definitely not for tall people. They hit their heads a couple of times. I think this should be noted on the description for people to make a comfortable choice and no one is seriously hurt. The refrigerator does not keep things cool. The freezer part works fine, but the upper part does not. The apartment is located in close proximity to most museums and restaurants, so we made the best of it. Thanks for everything.
