The maintenance of this property was not as expected. There were bulbs out. The controls for the fans either needed batteries or did not work properly. You could not have the fans on without having the lights on too. Some of the remotes did not work for all the TVs. I called and was advised maintenance would come, but they never came. There were several of the dining room chairs broken. A note was left advising tenants of this. Not sure if it was the tenants before us warning future tenants or housekeeping. The cleanliness was not as expected. There was dust on the fans and vents and dust bunnies all over. There was only one closet in the whole house that was usable (2nd floor). All the other closets were dusty and dirty from the heater hoses running throughout the house. Although of all these setbacks we still had a good time, but I won't rent this property in the future.

This location is great for spending time on the beach. It’s a bit far from the bigger Outer Banks attractions, but that was fine for our vacation. The house is situated close to the Atlantic, and the main dining/common area looks out over the ocean. The house was nice and clean when we arrived. Everything seemed in working order, other than a clogged tub drain in the master suite. There were a few negatives though: the fixtures were all a bit cheap and pretty worn out; the pots and pans were just nasty; the exterior of the house and decks seem to be a season past needing to be painted; the carpeting on the stairs was loose; and there was no airflow through the kids’ bedroom on the first floor. Otherwise, it was a really nice place to spend a week.

We loved our stay! The house was clean and had a FULLY stocked kitchen. The game room and pool/hot tub were a huge hit with the kids (and adults). The only downside (not exactly a downside) was the layout had a few oddities. The second story had 2 bathrooms side by side. I’m sure there’s a logical reason it was just odd. Didn’t interfere with our stay or the rating we gave at all. The other weird note is there was only 1 exit door. Lots of decks with comfortable seating but none of the decks connected with stairs on the outside which seems very unusual. Again this didn’t affect the rating just found it odd. Overall we had a great stay!

We have rented nationally and internationally through VRBO and Homeaway for many years. Our VRBO rental in September had some disappointing aspects but this VRBO rental in December was not anything like our VRBO/Homeaway rentals in the past. We never interacted with this property “owner” but with a rental management company, Surf or Sound, who piled their costs on top of VRBO costs and sent us a 7-page detailed “Vacation Rental Agreement Under the NC Vacation Rental Act”. Surf or Sound charged us a credit card fee for using a credit card, and a fee for a Protection Plan that I had tried to opt out of, and these charges were taxed, adding to total cost. When we arrived, there was no house number to identify the property as there were on all others we saw nearby. There were none of the usual condiments, etc, in the kitchen such as salt and pepper, no aluminum foil or cling wrap or plastic dishes for leftovers; also, no clothes hangers. When we contacted Surf or Sound for clothes-hangars we were told they did not supply them, we should go to the Dollar Store. The house was more like a management company rental than a VRBO rental. The property was advertised as having four king beds; there are only two with one queen and one full with the bunk beds – which accurate description helps when you have to bring linens, which we did because linens are not supplied off-season and we preferred not to rent them. The linens we brought included kitchen towels, sponge, kitchen and bathroom soaps, thank goodness. The house itself is ideally located on the beach and has a beautiful main room with floor-to-ceiling windows/doors facing the ocean, with a separate king bedroom facing the ocean on the second level down. The house can sleep 10-12 easily but there is limited seating on the main floor as in couches and chairs, that is, only for 4-5, with dining chairs otherwise available. This house has a lot of promise but does need some work such as screens, blinds, maintenance. These latter don’t really bother us but the $ issues and the others above have caused us to look elsewhere for future property rentals. VRBO, we enjoyed you when you were really Vacation Rental By Owner, sometimes frumpy but always feeling more like a home, whether in the US or abroad. ‘Bye

The rental process was extremely easy. Check in and out was the same. Lived the view and the space in the home was plenty for the 6 off us. Home needs some maintainance issues taken care of and better mattresses in secondary rooms but we all had a great time!
