This home is right on the beach...and that's what you're coming for, right? The kitchen is well stocked and large enough to not feel crowded. The main room with the kitchen / living room is perfect for hanging out and playing games. Bedrooms are small and some beds had a mattress topper...which was nice because it gave you the option for a soft or firmer feel if you took it off. The front porch was well shaded with unobstructed views. It still takes well over 100 steps to get to the actual ocean with a small dune to walk over in front of the house. The only "downsides" were no enclosed outdoor shower and no convenient wash station to get the sand off your feet right before entering the home. Be sure to bring your own beach chairs and boogie boards, etc. The parking is very tight and your vehicle will just be a few feet from the road, so be careful with young children. I do recommend Molasses Reef and hope to return in the future.

Molasses Reef was ok to stay at but did have issues? All the storm doors did not close correctly and the locks were broken? Lighting in kitchen area very dim, beds were uncomfortable and sagged a lot! You take your life in your hands when parking and trying to leave your parking spot. Though we liked Carolina Shores and would utilize them again, we won't be reserving this home again ---

This house was literally right on the beach. The best part was sitting on the back porch with my morning coffee & watching the ocean waves roll in. Unbelievable location. The house was on the smaller side but clean & it worked for us. I kind of like the beach cottage feel. There are definitely updates needed but the price was right for this kind of view. We plan to return for sure. Large strips on both sides of the house with no other homes making the beach area feel almost private. Can not park more than 3 cars and if it rains those cars can be 1/2 under water. Helps to back into spots but busy road can make that difficult. Everything on one level helped for our aging mother. She could just sit on the back porch & feel like she’s on the beach. Amazing.

We have been coming to this house on and off for almost 20 years. It is not a huge multi story, over-blown house like you can find down the beach, it works for us. The beach right here is pretty quiet due to the gaps between houses on this section of the beach. Nice covered deck in the back for watching the storms that sometimes roll through. Pro tip, check the router behind the TV for the wifi password, the one provided is sometimes incorrect.We sometimes take a year off, but we will be back!

We loved this cottage, comfy and cozy. The roofed porch was perfect when watching the Dolphins, or early mornings. The Beach was perfect. We loved the Artwork ! Parking is tight...we had three vehicles, including a Truck. a wagon, and a sedan.The outdoor shower was used many times We were very happy being there, and would use this Cottage again. Light bulb switches, washing machine cycles didn't always start or finish.

It was Heaven but don’t want others to learn that!
What a find! This cottage felt like home the first moment we walked in. The proximity to the beach, shops and sites was unbelievable. My brother, son and I plus several of his friends found this property perfect. On a part of the beach that was a bit out of the way gave us the peace and serenity to take advantage of the waves and walking. Loved cooking fish from the local market Billy’s and having a traditional boil at home. Loved everything about Molasses Reef- one week of work and one week for vacation. Already have reservations in for 2022! It is a piece of Heaven.

My family had a wonderful time at the Molasses Reef. The house has a ton of personality and was very comfortable. The location to the beach cannot be beat and the back deck is a perfect place to relax and watch the ocean. The rooms are bigger than they appear in the pictures and the kitchen was very well stocked with pots, pans, and many other items for those who like to cook. We will definitely be returning.

You can not ask for a better location - this home is just steps from the beautiful beach and pelicans and dolphins greeted us each day. We enjoyed OBX - wild horses in Corolla, Duck Donuts, lighthouse visit, fishing, and delicious seafood. The kitchen is well furnished but home needs some upgrades - the bathroom shower was VERY small and the bedrooms were not especially clean or comfortable.

When we arrived, we learned that there was not one garbage receptacle to be found in the kitchen. I called Carolina Shores and the person who answered (a female whose name I cannot remember) was less than enthused to help and sounded like I was bothering her (even sighing at one point). She told me she would contact the cleaning company and get back to me, which she did. However, she told me that they would drop it off outside on the deck that day which never happened. I did not bother to call back. We used our own garbage bags hung on the kitchen chair all week.
The house needs to be deep cleaned. I realize that we were there the second to last week in August; however, I do not feel that means that anyone renting a property should have to be subject to less than pristine cleanliness. That's not to say that the house was dirty. It was not. The bathrooms were clean as was the kitchen. It just needed to be deep cleaned.
There were ants living in cracks of the stove. I didn't bother to call Carolina Shores after the reception I received during my first phone call.
However, I have to say that the people I dealt with before we got into the house were very polite and helpful, both on the phone and during check-in.
The house itself met our expectations and we enjoyed a great week on the beach. It is an older cottage and the owners have done a great job using every available square inch with hooks and sideboards. The owners might want to consider updating the bathrooms and kitchen, particularly the floors.

We loved being right on the beach. The back porch was the best. We loved being able to eat outside, sit in the hammock, enjoy our coffee!

Great location
We loved the close proximity to the beach as well as to some of our favorite restaurants. Enjoyed the beautiful sunrise every morning. Such a great view from the property. We also saw dolphins almost daily. The property is adorable. Loved the artwork.

We actually love this little house. It's surprisingly roomy despite the small size & access to the beach can't be beat. We have stayed here 2 yrs in a row & would probably stay again. Unfortunately, the cleanliness upon arrival leaves a lot to be desired. Aside from a quick vacuum & wipe down of the kitchen & bathrooms, it's dirty. Never been dusted so there are clumps of dust on the top of doors, windowsills, baseboards. Not great if you have asthma. The dishes are never clean, the coffee maker has never been cleaned and has mold in the water well. We usually have to come in & clean ourselves before we can use anything. The front door lock always seems to have problems (the deadbolt wouldn't even lock during our stay). These are easy to address things that never seem to be addressed (gave a similar review last year). Also, a super frustrating thing that should be corrected is the drop off of linens for the NEXT week's rental. They drop this heavy bin right in front of the front door 3 days before our trip is over. We are expected to move it somewhere or we can't even get out of the house. Super annoying and unnecessary. They should have a designated spot to put it that doesn't inconvenience those of us still in the house. So all in all, a great house but the management company could address these issues easily but never seem to read our reviews??

As longtime OBX vacationers, we have stayed in dozens of homes up and down the coast. We always opt for oceanfront and we prefer the classic single-family beach boxes. Most have a "well-worn" character with lots of wood paneling and dated furniture. Not so with Molasses Reef! the living space and kitchen are painted bright white with colorful, quirky art everywhere. A huge flatscreen, great wifi and nice, comfy furniture made our indoor time very enjoyable. Beds are smallish but comfy and the two bathrooms were clean. What more can you want? The real appeal is the "right on the beach" location on a quiet stretch of Kitty Hawk about a 30-minute beach walk north of Avalon Pier. We loved the covered back deck to get out of the sun complete with lots of seating and a hammock. The quiet side deck was a nice bonus. This place is perfect for a family group of 4-6 people. We'd be happy to book here again.

We loved this house and the issues were minor. Basically, the utensils (especially the knives) need replacing. They were impossible to use. There is no cabinet space for your own food so we ended up using the table as storage. This kept up from having family meals there. The good news is the kids loved eating at the counter anyway! Parking is terrible and there's no grill. Not much they can do about the parking since space is limited but a small charcoal grill would be very nice! A larger kitchen trash can is also needed. They have a very small one that doesn't work for a group of 6.

Overall a great experience and great location. We would definitely rent it again. A few minor items: would be nice if there were a few more of the higher, sturdier chairs. The low plastic chairs are not too accommodating for bigger guys. The front and back storm doors slam really hard and could catch someone's foot. Otherwise, no issues.

It waas wonderful to spend the week with children and young grandchildren (who had never seen the ocean before). My husband has some mobility issues and it was difficult to find a cottage on the beach that didn't have a thousand steps. It was easy for him to walk out on the porch and feel the ocean breezes and enjoy the sunshine. This is what a beach cottage should look like. Thanks for a great week.

Loved our stay! This was the most comfortable house I think we have stayed in. We LOVED THE location. This is the classic beach box house!We spent most of our time on the beach and on the back porch. It was perfect especially for the grandparents that came. We have stayed in larger and fancier houses but we wanted to be on the beach and we loved laying in our bed seeing the ocean and hearing it.

The best feature of this cottage on the beach is the fact that you could step out onto a wide beach with ease from the back porch. Additionally, the porch was low enough that while sitting you still have a magnificent view of the sand and surf which was great for monitoring children's play. The built in picnic table and hammock were great features as well. Inside was clean and met our needs. The WiFi and cable brought a small simple cottage into modern day. The bedrooms were average size, but the top bunk did not have a safety rail and therefore we did not use it. It is hard to get ON the beach on a budget... Molasses Reef made it possible!

This was the first time staying at the Molasses Reef. It was a great stay. The house was clean, roomy and just right for our family of 8. The back deck was a God sent, after a long day on the beach the late afternoon on the swing was the perfect end to a day. No rain so we had no chance to shop, just enjoyed the nice beach with only a few steps back to the house. It is a must stay for this one, and we plan to be back. It was hard to close that door when it was time to leave.
