We were thrilled with every aspect of this vacation home with amenities for our family of eight. Our daughter and husband and little ones ages 1 and 3 loved the toys and had plenty of room to play in the sunny great room. We appreciated the high chair and portable crib. The short walk to the beach led us to stunning sunrises and sunsets, and we luxuriated in the hot tub afterward. The kitchen was well-stocked for meals and baking. It was a gem of a holiday. We hope to return!

We stayed at The Whale’s Tail a week ago with family and friends. Our son got married that week and we found the perfect place to stay. It was a VERY busy week with the wedding. I’m glad we had a place to come back to everyday and RELAX! This place was big enough for 7 adults, one toddle and our Giant Schnauzer pup! The walk to the beach was only 3 min. Everything was just wonderful! Barb was amazing to work with! Definitely do not pack any linens…beach towels….umbrellas or beach chairs! This house was fully stocked! The kitchen also had everything we needed! We would definitely stay again! Thanks Barb for everything!

Our family of 9, including 3 grandchildren, plus 2 dogs had a great week. The excellent weather, beach and sights made for a week of rememberances.
The grands grew closer together in the hot tub, bunk beds and playing games at the big table.
The house is exactly as advertised; comfortable and large.
One piece of advice - bring drinking water. Beach water is intolerable.

Property is very well appointed. Lots of beach toys, chairs, sand toys etc. Plus indoor games. Lots of kitchen supplies, refrigerators. Bed was very comfortable. We enjoyed the beautiful and beaches and delicious nearby restaurants. The owner was very nice to work with.

The house was an easy walk to the beach. We loved going to the beach everyday. The beach was never very crowded, which was amazing. We also enjoyed the outdoor shower that was easy to access and helped with sand management. The house had plenty of space for our family of five and the kids loved the ping pong table.

The house is perfect. We had 9 people with two dogs. I loved every bit of it. And the location to the beach was awesome. It was our first time to OBX and I loved being able to walk to the beach when ever we wanted. The bikes are a bonus. We used them a lot. Really the house was as described and had all the amenities you needed down to boogie boards, sand toys along with beach chairs and a cart to tow them. It really made everything easy. Everything was fresh and clean. The attention to detail was spot on. I loved this house and when we come back, this is where I’ll be staying. We were the perfect beach bums for the week in a wonderful home. The owner is very responsive and gave suggestions of places to see and experience. Thank you for sharing your beautiful, clean, close to the beach home with us.

The host was still cleaning the place when it was time for us to check in. She didn’t apologize for not being ready on time. The check in time is 3 pm and check out is 9 am which is already a little extreme in my experience. We had to put sheets on some of the beds. The place was a little grungy (carpet is torn in some places, furniture is beyond worn), dishwasher was completely worthless (didn’t even dispense the soap). We didn’t know this until we had already eaten a couple meals on presumably dirty dishes. The endless list of rules and tasks to complete before our 9 am check out made me feel like I was housesitting rather than paying to stay in a vacation home. Not a relaxing experience.

This property was perfect for our family of 5 and two dogs. We greatly enjoyed the hot tub, riding bikes and playing corn hole. The property has so many great spaces outside for enjoying the warm weather. The walk to the beach is so easy and fast and just about every beach item you would need is already provided. We greatly enjoyed our stay!

We had a wonderful stay at the Whale's Tale! It is better than advertised, with all the amenities you could need, as well as many "extra"s to make your stay more convenient and pleasant. Honestly, we have never been made to feel so welcome or had our needs so well-prepared-for at any rental house. The location was great - quiet neighborhood with a very short and easy walk to the beach (even with small children and all the stuff that they entail). The decks were especially lovely for enjoying the beautiful weather. Communication with the owner was very easy. We would absolutely stay here again!

The house is in a great location (a 2-minute walk to the beach, a bike ride to the historic area, and less than a 10-minute drive to shopping and grocery). Everything was as described. There is a little updating that's needed but our group of 8 was very comfortable. The homeowner, Barbara, was very good with communication. She answered many questions for us prior to our trip and responded very quickly to rectify a couple of issues that we had when we arrived. We definitely hope to visit again!

We had a wonderful stay at this immaculate house that was incredibly well equipped with all linens including tons of towels for beach and home. Beds and varied pillows were all extremely comfortable. The kitchen was also a total delight with every imaginable piece of kitchen equipment. Very kid friendly set up with lots of kids books, toys and games. Even the 4 year old didn’t complain about the very easy 2-3 block walk to the perfect beach. The hot tub was a real bonus and all outdoor decks are nicely furnished and allow space for private quiet time to refresh amidst energetic family activities. Communication with the owner was excellent. All in all, we surely look forward to returning to The Whales Tail!

The property had everything you could want or need. A quick walk to the beach or you could use the bikes that are there to go out and explore. Plenty of space for 10 people. The host was very accommodating and the house was filled with everything you could want and need for a great time. The hot tub, ping pong table, bikes and cornhole added to the fun!

We spent a week here – 4 adults, 2 children, and a dog. The house met our needs very well, and we had a wonderful time. Barbara was a pleasure to work with – responsive to queries pre-visit and, although no issues came up during our stay, she made it clear she was available any time if we needed help.
Overall I’d give it 4.5 stars. The house is a bit older and some parts worn, but much has been updated. Was very clean and well-supplied – variety of quality cookware/appliances, spices, pantry items (some), toiletries, cleaning supplies, TP, paper towels, bath towels, beach towels, etc. Really, Barbara provides a very thoughtful inventory of items that made our stay comfortable. Much appreciated!
Liked the layout of the house. Bedrooms downstairs, 2 on each side of the hallway. Each pair shares an adjoining full bathroom (which worked fine for us but might not be ideal for all). Two bedrooms have sliding doors opening to the back deck. Beds quite comfortable, nice linens.
Upstairs is a big open room with a lovely cathedral ceiling: kitchen with island (and seating), half-bath, dining/living rooms, TV, ping-pong, games, massage chair, upstairs deck (where we watched the sunset and looked for stars). We spent most of our indoor time here, with its open, airy, and relaxed vibe. Massage chair, ping-pong table, and margarita maker got good use! ☺
Other things that enhanced our stay:
• high chair, booster seat, baby gate, pack-n-play, lots of kids’ books, a few toys
• bikes/helmets – across Hwy 12 is a nice bike trail
• beach supplies: chairs, some umbrellas, one cabana-type thing in a bit of disrepair but we rigged it to work, carts, beach toys
• outdoor shower, hose, clothesline
• full-sized washer-dryer with supplies
• 2 additional small fridges (helpful for bottled water)
• dog bowls
Main downside: well water often had a strong, unpleasant odor; in fact, Barbara recommended bottled water for drinking (maybe this is par for the course on OBX, but it was kind of a pain for us to keep buying bottled water. I guess we’re big water drinkers, lol).
Nothing to do with the house:
• close to the beach the boardwalk has a few stairways to navigate; if using the beach cart, you need to lift it up and down the stairs
• we like Harris Teeter, but not this one; we had better luck at Food Lion
Didn’t use the TV or hot tub so can’t comment on those.
In short, I would definitely recommend the property, and Barbara as a host!

The house itself has everything you need: from comfortable beds to kitchen filled with every necessity! The owner, Barbara, is super kind and accommodating! I would rent from her again and again.
