Stayed for roughly a week at a property on Kauai with the wife with intentions to have both a secluded/remote get away and quite place for business conference calls/meetings while away.Upon arrival, unfortunately we found the property was under construction. Construction (landscape only, not structural) was obviously unexpected and urgent due to unforeseen conditions so was not at the owners or Hawaii Life Rentals fault though was still upsetting. I will add we were notified a few days prior to arrival of this so it was NOT completely unexpected, the contractor just did not properly provide anyone notice of the extent of work to be completed.Anyways with all that said, what was amazing is Hawaii Life went ABOVE AND BEYOND to ensure we were satisfied many ways, primarily by staying in communication to help quickly/professionally get this corrected.Besides this small issue (again not at all their fault) the property/view/service/quality and much more were unbelievable. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND and unquestionably will be my top choice for corporate retreats or family vacations next when visiting Hawaii.

The red flag should have been when I began to see replies from the management that the house was due for a renovation in Nov. We had already booked it when I began to see those replies. I booked it because it has a washing/dryer, and an out door shower, which my husband loves. We arrived needing to wash clothes and of course a note on the washer said "out of order". 5 nights without being able to wash towels or linen or clothes was very frustrating. We washed clothes in the kitchen sink after having to purchase a stopper for the sink. They did offer to refund $250, which I have not seen yet, but appreciate that. The entire house is in bad shape. We never used the outdoor shower, because the sliding door from the bed room and the one from the bathroom would not open. Most of the sliding doors would not open or were very difficult to open. We worried about breaking them, so we did not force them to open. A light switch cover fell off. A piece of molding on the bathroom door fell off. The grill was nasty looking. We didn't dare use the outdoor sauna. I will say the kitchen and everything in the house was clean, it was just over all it was very run down and it is hard to enjoy paying $5700 for five nights when a place is in that kind of shape.

It was a very private properry with beautiful views and a great location for a perfect intimate setting. Previous reviews mentioned the AC not working in the bedroom and when we arrived, it was very warm, but we put the floor fan at the entry so cool air blew in from the front of the house which fixed the problem. The closet space is also lacking so pack only real compaint was a stray cat hanging around the house and I'm allergic to cats so it was a nuisance. We later found out prior occupants have been feeding the cat and we were not made aware of this ahead of time.

Magical place to spend our honeymoon. Private. Beautiful walks down to Secrets beach. My only recommendation would be to add AC unit to bedroom. Hot tub is great. My wife loved the visiting cat to which she named Oscar. Beautiful sunsets sitting on outside recliners

Secluded....but not away from everything.
Great location if you are looking for some some seclusion but only a mile away from Kilauea. Cute 1 bedroom house with a secluded beach about a 5 minute walk/climb. Highly recommended if you want to get away from all the resorts.

We stayed at this property for a week in April, and it was a really perfect getaway for us! (But maybe not for everybody) The property is a quaint little cottage that has a beautiful of the north side of the island and ocean with beautiful sunsets. For us, it was a perfect place to walk down to the beach, as there is private access to the beach albeit poorly marked. But that was part of the charm too - walking down wrong paths to find our way but eventually we go there and it was a glorious, very quiet and serene beach with VERY FEW people! The cottage itself was very well appointed - everything we needed to make a couple of nice dinners. There was no issue with check-in, it was clean, quiet, and just generally a really amazing place to relax and unwind. Some of the doors in the house were hard to latch but after a little struggle we did get them locked. My only complaint was through the concierge process - I sent a couple of emails requesting help with bookings but never got a response so I booked them myself. The only other thing I would say - while I really LOVED this property, it was pretty far removed from some of the major attractions and there was a lot of driving required to do much of anything - but that worked for us!! Thanks for helping us have an amazing vacation!!

Hale Lani was my most favorite place I've ever stayed in Kauai. It's private, romantic, beautiful and peaceful! Short walk to a gorgeous beach - short bike ride into town. The bed is super comfy - the shower and hot tub are a dream - the outside tiki torches are super fun. The staff was lovely and professional. ** a very tiny few negatives - the place does show wear and tear for this price - a bit rough around the edges. Could use a new stovetop and some minor repairs. The toaster oven is unnecessary - takes up so much space - a small toaster would be lovely. Beware there are lots of spiders OUTSIDE (easy to brush away) and lots of duck poop :) And it could really use some new patio furniture. BUT NONE Of those things would ever keep me away!

My husband and I stayed here for 6 nights from 11/30 to 12/6. This was for our 10 year anniversary and definitely a step up from what we normally book or can afford, but it was a special occasion. The property is breathtaking! The most beautiful views we have ever seen, and a short walk down a private bath to secrets beach. We loved the little town that is nearby and had everything we needed from groceries to coffee. It is also one of the few spots on the island that the Nene birds hang out (you won't see them on the East and South sides). We also learned that Ben Stiller’s property is VERY close by on the bluff to the Northwest. We enjoyed stopping to talk to the horses and goats that are nearby the property. This is away from the hustle and bustle of Kapa'a and Lihue, but not a bad drive to get there. Now, for the list of things that could be improved.
1.1. The Spa - For whatever strange reason, the plug for the spa is DIRECTLY below it. The water level is kept very high because of the jets, and when you get in, water is displaced. That displaced water goes right over the side and onto the plug, which trips the GFI. This happenned our first night nd we were not able to try again for two days until it dried out. Then we had to wait for it to come back up to temp. We actually spoke to the spa service man who was there who also agreed it was terrible. This really should be fixed as it is a safety issue. HAving the spa is an awesome feature, but worthless if it can't be used
2. There are tiki torches on the property which are beautiful at night, but all were empty. We had to pay to buy new canisters and fuel. Also, the citronella candles were empty, we also purchsed. I understand that these are additional items to add to the ambiance, but if you are going to offer them, please keep them stocked
3. Communication - there are 5 notices about how to contact the host. I messaged them several times abut our flight delay, a broken umbrella, etc. and never got a single response.
4. the garderner - We had booked an in home massage for 8 am. At around 8:15, the gardners came and were leaf blowing RIGHT NEXT TO OUR HOUSE. I understand they need to do their job, but take a hint. You have two people lying face down, move to another piece f the property for the time being. It was very invasive of privacy. OUr massage therapists hd to shoo them away. It would also be nice for mgmt to advise us when they are coming so activiites can be planned around that.

We had our honeymoon at Hale Lani in 2001. Loved it. We returned 20 years later to find that it has become run down, lacking repairs, and is in depressing shape compared to our prior visit. Just can't "go back" to old times. A big disappointment.
It needs major renovation and general maintenance to get it back to its previous state. The addition of WIFI and A/C was great, but not enough to erase the disaapointment of the condition of the interior/exterior and landscaping.

The cottage is definitely sufficiently air conditioned despite earlier reviews. The walk to secret beach is only 5-10 mins and is a private path with an an amazing sunset, we enjoyed it a lot. The views over the ocean are great from the hills next to the property and the stars at night are soooo clear! 5 mins drive for groceries however this is a remote stay from most tours etc and traffic can be difficult when heading west. We loved the remoteness however. Overall I think it’s worth the price and I had a great stay. Eric the manager was great also. Only negative is the bedroom gets too bright in the morning even when using the blinds and so we couldn’t sleep in at all. Chickens also wake up early but that can’t be helped.

The cottage is the perfect size for a couple with great outdoor space, excellent privacy and great views. The hot tub was great, the kitchen worked very well with all amenities you could need. A perfect, simple retreat for two. The privacy, the views, the flora and fauna, the hike down to the beach. All of it made this cottage a perfect honeymoon retreat for us. We let the breezes blow through the screen doors most every night — leading to blissful, perfect nights of sleep (but the birds do get up early!) Loved our trips to the beach. Big surf in early March kept us from swimming but it was beautiful and not many other people. The 10-minute hike to the water is beautiful but steep in places. The Kilauea village center with shops and restaurants provided great food and a few other people, when we needed any social interaction.

This sweet little bungalow is a perfect get away from Old Man Winter in Iowa. Though, it's paint is peeling, private entry gate broken, entry key, near impossible to work with arthuritic hands, hose dripping, bedding "tired" generally needing TLC. The views are spectacular. With the new build across the way, patio privacy is compromised. Nothing beats the ocean views and being lulled to sleep by crashing waves.

Excellent location, quiet picturesque setting, extremely romantic. Beautiful accommodations, with gate, private Gardens, hike down to fabulous beach. Everything in good working order, great bed, linens, and kitchen set up nicely. A little warm in Sept, we hit hot weather, but used the A/C inside to keep the bedroom cool for sleeping. There are some interesting creatures around, but this is jungle. A few bugs were successfully kept at bay with citronella candles when we were out on the deck.

Not my monies worth.
View was nice. Property was clean and gated. Trek to beach was about 10-12 minutes at best. Bring bug spray. “AC” was standing fan in one room. Others had nothing. Hot tub was filthy & at low temp on arrival. Not impressed for the $$$ spent.

I have mixed feelings about our stay at Hale Lani. It is a beautiful location. We were told that it is an old property whose owners are not keen on long term maintenance. We had a few issues during our stay. One of the closet doors fell apart, the 25 year old oven suffered a broken control knob, and the patio umbrella broke off in a storm. The property manager responded quickly and at my husband's prompting we did receive a credit on our stay. The missing closet door was not a big deal but no umbrella on the patio table we elected not to use it (no shade), we used a table top oven in place of the wall oven. There are other items that need attention(trim needs paint on exterior, soap scum or other white substance on wooden door in shower, sticking patio door). I may sound picky but the rental price was on the high end. I understand the closet door and oven were repaired after we left. We had no problem with the hot water, the washer & dryer, the refrigerator, and the bed. We did not use the hot tub or BBQ. This was a very special visit for us so maybe I had too high of expectations. We enjoyed the location for the beauty and quiet and the time we spent there taking photos and relaxing. I would recommend this property with reservations. I tried to arrange a massage for my husband via the concierge service but could not make contact.

BEST WEEK EVER
My husband and I enjoyed our stay so much, we didn't want to leave. Not only was this property stunning, it was remote, clean, cozy and the views were spectacular. Best part? Access to the beach, just a short hike down. Even the walk to the beach was lovely with all the lush plant life and birds singing. The beach is beautiful, not at all crowded and good for swimming, surfing, boogie boarding and exploring. Also the location is amazing with all the local shops and restaurants just down the road. Food and service was terrific. It was paradise and perfect for our honeymoon getaway and we cannot wait to come back.

Hospitality is an industry I'm well versed in. There were multiple missed opportunities that would have easily made our stay worth the investment. When spending $600 - $700 per night I expect seamless access to the property, all working appliances without excuses and a household with provisions. Here are a couple of missed opportunities that an organized professional hospitality service would not have missed.
- I have a gate code, now treasure hunt to find where to punch that code in. Good thing we arrived with some daylight left.
- Got a lock box code, no key in the box and the home is locked. Property management office is closed, leave a message, no call back for 3 days after calling for the second time on a different issue. When you get a property managers name and number that is not who arranged the stay, keep it close. That's how we gained access to the home an hour after we arrived.
- House cleaner brought us a key, we notified her to notify management the Spa was dirty (we discovered while waiting to enter). No one was notified when we called back to inquire when that would be addressed.
- Home book provided was tattered, stained and lacked complete explanations on operating appliances.
- Trouble shooting: Oven display not readable, Microwave not plugged in at its location (told we could lift this heavy appliance down from inside a cabinet that requires a step stool to reach) and plug it in ourselves when we want to use it. Refrigerator ruined the majority of our purchased produce do to freezing. (when management was notified it was excuses about how sensitive it is and we just needed to have somehow known it would have temperature inconsistencies because of the climate)
- No baking sheets, had to purchase and bring to the house when requested.

Hale Lani is located among beautiful lush grounds that are well maintained, quiet and private. As previous reviewers noted, however, the bbq and oven need to be replaced (oven is almost 30 yrs old- a Thermador convection oven). There also seemed to be a lack of any kind of special touch. A previous reviewer noted there was no gift basket. There was a card left for us, but it was only made out to one of us-even though we made it clear several times that we are a couple celebrating our anniversary. Communication was poor--we were given the wrong code for the key lock and not told to put # to open the gate. We were given several pages of terms and conditions, but no information was given regarding how to operate the oven, TV, BBQ, etc. Finally, for this price (plus over $400 fees and taxes) we expected better maintenance of this luxury cottage (badly in need of paint on exterior, kitchen counter, etc.). Our own home is near the beach and we know that periodic upkeep is required. We would have given more stars but saw that our same concerns were also noted by other reviewers in the past. We also stayed in Kapaa during our trip, and the special touches there were outstanding! We did enjoy visiting the lighthouse nearby when we were at Hale Lani. The hike to the beach was longer than we expected (good for people who love to hike).

We booked a place in Poipu but needed a place for a few extra days and decided to try staying up north. Next trip we will stay here the whole time. Loved the amazing views, the short hike to a beautiful beach and the privacy of our own little place.
