About this house rental
Perched on the hillside 50 yards above pristine Peter Bay Beach in the heart of the Virgin Islands National Park, the suite boasts one of the most idyllic locations on all of St. John. Sugar white sand beaches and crystal clear turquoise waters are at your doorstep from this private one and a half acre beachfront property. The Caribbean views from Peter Bay beyond Whistling Key to Jost Van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands are simply magnificent.
This private 1 bedroom suite features fantastic ocean views from all principal rooms, a 4 poster mahogany bed in the AC’d bedroom, a full kitchen and a large outdoor tiled deck complete with hammock, dining area and barbeque. The suite consists of the lower portion of a traditional Caribbean home and possesses an authentic old world tropical feel, surrounded by lush gardens and emerald green hills. The property owners live onsite in the completely separate upper portion of the house and are available to assist with anything you may require. Private beach chairs and snorkel gear are provided for your use down at Peter Bay Beach, which is accessed via a private, paved path and stairway on the property. There is excellent snorkeling at the coral reef right in front of the house. During the day, soak up the sun, sand and waves from this very private beachfront location. At night, listen to the sound of the waves crashing on the beach and the tree frogs’ serenade while gazing at the bounty of bright stars in the sky. Relax at this nature lover’s paradise.

David and Denise are Fantastic Hosts, taking care of us, from meeting us at the car ferry, to taking us to the grocery store, and helping us settle into the apartment. This is one of the few small places to stay where you can actually walk right down to the spectacular Peter Bay/Cinnamon Bay beaches! The views from the deck are spectacular! The apartment is basic and has everything you need for your stay, including a full kitchen. The bedroom suite is A/C'd and quite nice. Only advice is to bring bug spray for the early evening and morning no-see-ems and mosquitos.

We loved our stay at Denise and David’s place. You can’t find a more idyllic location on St John with such easy access to the amazing north shore beaches. This little jungle hideaway made for such a relaxing getaway with its views of the water and the sounds of the tree frogs and birds. The place is very clean and well stocked with essentials. Not fancy but we liked the old Caribbean vibe. (If you want luxury for a larger group by the way, rent their brand new villa next door - laplayavilla.com - gorgeous!) The beach below is lovely and we appreciated the climb back up the stone steps to help burn off all the island cocktails we enjoyed. Highly recommend and you will find your hosts accessible for any questions or needs. We shall return!!

David met us at the ferry and took us grocery shopping and to the jeep rental before leading us to the property. We were delighted with the sense of solitude - only the insects, frogs and birds for background music. We had a million-dollar view - we could see the beautiful bay framed by green trees and vines. The unit itself is very basic but clean and has everything you need to get you ready to enjoy the little private slice of beach or to go next door to Cinnamon Bay or Trunk Bay or anywhere else on the island. We had no complaints about the bed or linen supply. Some visitors have a problem with the steps down to the beach but if you are healthy and reasonably fit, it is a descent to paradise on beautiful stone steps. Just hang onto the railing and then relax and enjoy the exercise on the way back up! The unit is 40-some years old and feels like it is at home nestled on the hillside - old-time island life. We loved it. We did rent a jeep, so we had the run of St. John and enjoyed every minute.

We recently stayed at this property and came away feeling that the listing oversold the experience. The description and photos create the impression of a beachfront suite with stunning, unobstructed views and easy access to a beautiful white-sand beach. In reality, that was not our experience. The view from the property was obstructed by vegetation, and not as nice as the panoramic water views suggested in the listing photos.The beach itself was also quite different from what we expected. Rather than a pristine white-sand beach as shown in the photos, it was quite rocky. While the beach is accessible from the property, the walk was steeper and more challenging than the listing led us to believe, and it did not feel like being "right on the beach." They did have nice Adirondack chairs and still enjoyable to be on Peter Bay, I think the pictures should be updated as they are likely of Cinnamon or Trunk Bay, which are close by, but not the beach you have access to. We also found the property to be more worn and dated than the photos suggest. While it was functional, it lacked the quality and overall condition we expected based on the description and price point.St. John is a beautiful island, and we still immensely enjoyed our vacation, but we believe prospective renters should understand that the property's location, views, beach access, and overall condition may not match the expectations created by the listing.
