We loved the Shell Cottage! Perfect size for us and had everything we needed. An easy and pleasant walk to the beach. Really nice quiet area with great neighbors! Plus, this cottage must have been a good luck charm for us! My husband found the elusive Junonia shell during our stay. We have been visiting Sanibel for years and have spent countless hours looking for this rare and special shell. And this was the lucky visit!

Property was as advertised. Just redone after the hurricane. In a very quiet area. Limited traffic. Nice grounds. House is small, but ideal for what we needed and wanted. A long block from the beach, but very doable for just a short walk.
Sanibel still rebuilding and not a lot open. This as of Nov. 18. But there are work crews everywhere helping the process.
Great communication between us and the owners, before, during, and after our stay. Nice to know.
Short answer. Would I stay here again? Yes.

My husband and I rented this cottage for 9 days to celebrate our anniversary . We arrived in the late afternoon and left the next morning. I realize there are a lot of fabulous reviews about the space (which is why we reserved it), but the minuses definitely outweighed the pluses for us. First of all, as people who love to cook our own food (which is one of the reasons why we use vrbo, there was virtually NO place to put our groceries in the kitchen. Not even one shelf in the cabinet was available for us. The kitchen is tiny and cramped, and if. you are a family of more than 2, you are going to be banging into each other and wondering where to sit. There were signs on the walls and refrigerators instructing us to DO NOT turn off the security light, DO NOT open the windows (in the "welcome" book), plus a plethora of other rules telling us what we should not do. The security light was bright and supposedly needed to stay on as a deterrent so critters wouldn't mess with the garden. In all the. years we've stayed in vrbo's (and as a touring musician, I can tell. you it has been many), we've never been in a place where we couldn't open the windows or turn off lights. And you were not allowed to move the furniture on the porch to make it more comfortable. The bedrooms are small and the owners belongings are secured in closets. You feel like you are living with them, even though they are not there. I tried sleeping in the bed and felt like I was suffocating so I spent a sleepless night on the couch with the security light. The next morning my husband and I found another place, tidied up after ourselves and left. I reached out to the owner to let him know and requested that he consider giving us a refund or at least partial refund (something would have been nice!) as a good faith, good customer service gesture. I explained why we left and he denied that there were signs and told us well, we could have opened the windows and turned off the lights. Apparently, they'd had problems in the past. He was rude and unpleasant and I would never, never treat a customer this way in my business. We went to another location and had an amazing vacation with an owner who couldn't do enough for us to make our trip memorable. I cannot recommend this location and absolutely cannot recommend the host.

Construction workers next door beating and banging couldn’t even take a nap on my vacation. Older neighborhood with couch sitting out at the drive. The unit itself was clean. Lots of instructions most of which started with Do Not.

Just right for a family vacation! Lovely little lanai and outdoor spaces. Loved the laid back vibes and plants and animals around the property. Great location for biking to restaurants and the beach. Be sure to bring your own soap and shampoo. Also, the pillows could use an upgrade on the Master bed small thing compared to benefits of this little place. Beautiful and peaceful!

The house and its location were just what we were expecting from the description and it was a convenient 2 minute bike ride from the closest beach. The neighborhood (and the whole island) is very peaceful, and the house is well-equipped and was just right for the two of us.

Lovely quiet beach cottage two blocks from several beaches with shared pool. Nearby stores and restaurants. Fully equipped kitchen, decorated nicely, lots of books, movies and DVD player, cable tv, beach toys & beautiful flowers and trees. Loved my stay, will be back!

Great location to the beach. Could have been a little less cluttered. More organized. More updated. I bought my own coffee pot Bc the others were dirty. Kitchen towels stained. Bedding is very old. More lighting outside getting in and out of the car after dark considering alligators in the area. Owner should have maintenance on call for plumbing issues and dead animal removal. We were expected to handle both. Cottage is cute but could improve.

Cute beachy cottage with great outdoor spaces. We ate breakfast on the back deck and enjoyed wine on the lanai. The pool was refreshing after a day at the beach. Good space for 2 adults. Our favorite beach was Bowman's because of the shells It is a drive and a quarter-mile walk to the beach but well worth it!. Plan to bike to the closest beach from the cottage since it is about half a mile away. Check out Lighthouse Beach Park for the manatees. Great hosts! We will visit this area again!

We loved our stay but there are issues
After our stay, I asked the hosts to be more transparent on booking sites about the smelly issues. They have not, so I will. Two of the 7 nights we stayed there there was a horrific sewer smell that drove us inside for the evening. This is not due to the red tide as there was none. The sewage treatment plant is just on the other side of a wooded barrier and stream. The smell comes and goes maybe due to wind direction or the facility causing it? The cottage and gardens are darling and fulled with love. However, the front entry no longer looks like the photo so I had a hard time recognizing the unit and had to call the hosts. Photos need to be updated inside and out to reflect the current condition. There are beautiful flowers and gardens on the property that we truly enjoyed. The lanai is perfect for that old Florida charm with a lovely view of the garden. However, the fan cannot be on without the light which takes away from evenings on the lanai. The kitchen was stuffed with items but we still had to go to the store to buy a sharp knife, colander and can opener. Cutting boards and pans are badly scratched. The location is misleading. Yes the cottage is close to the beach if you are riding a bike but the 2 1/2 blocks is more like a half mile. This is difficult when dragging your beach gear. Parking at the beach entrances is by permit only so having a wagon or bikes is a must. The hosts failed to tell us they no longer provide bikes or beach chairs, even though it was in their description and photos at the time. Most rental places do provide bikes, beach chairs and umbrellas. Bike rentals are $40 for a week and they deliver! Beach chairs are $8 a day. Bring your own chairs and umbrella, as everything that was left at the cottage was rusted and mildewed. . The pool was lovely and the grounds to this 8 unit community are kept clean. We decided to come back to Sanibel for a month visit but because the hosts were misleading about the current condition of the property verses the photos we decided to book elsewhere. Because of these issues I would give the place a C rating. The hosts get an F rating for being misleading and neglecting their duties to be honest.

we very much enjoyed our stay, the hosts were very responsive and deeply cared. Sweet cottage, great location, near beaches. make sure you get a bike as traffic on main road not moving :). The internet is fast and very reliable. The kitchen well equipped. The AC works perfectly too. There are some times with bad smells which appear to come from the wastewater plant but locals assured us this is a temporary issue. Highly recommend it.

My wife and I were looking for a February break from the cold Michigan winter and we found it at Shell Cottage. A very pleasant cottage, very clean in a nice quiet neighborhood. Only a short walk to the beach. The walking/biking trails around the island are great. Many wonderful places to eat, shop and just enjoy yourself are located on Sanibel Island and in close by Ft. Myers. Very glad we booked our two week stay.

Nice little cottage
The cottage has comfy furniture and a nice large tv. There is a clean, new mattress on queen bed that we used. The shower has good pressure and the kitchen has all the utensils you might need as well as a clean, full-size fridge. We took advantage of the lovely heated pool a few times.
The location is within biking distance of good restaurants and an easy walk to a nice, free beach. Be sure to visit Island Cow and Traders, 2 of the best restaurants on the island!
Unfortunately, I am sensitive to smells and there is a sewage treatment plant at the end of the road and the odor was unpleasant for half of our stay; but the rest of time, I enjoyed the Adirondack chair on the front porch .

Pleasant little cottage
The property was beautiful, no complaints there. The only thing that marred our vacation was the proximity of the property to the island septic plant. Some mornings and evenings the smell was terrible.

Great week warm vacation
The cottage was great. Was well equipped, clean, and beautifully decorated. We spent a lot of time during the day walking the trails, bike riding, and spending time on the beach. Was nice to go back to the cottage, grill out and relax. It is a little piece of paradise! Would highly recommend!

Perfect for small family vacation
We stayed a week at the Shell Cottage and enjoyed every minute. What this place has going for it is the location, two bedrooms, use of bikes and beach gear, and responsive owners. There is also a newly constructed pool shared with other nearby units. This cottage is an older duplex style building sharing a wall with another unit, however we never would have known we had neighbors next door as the sound was well shielded. The cottage was good for three of us (and had beds to accommodate four) but would likely feel a bit cramped with any more than that.
By staying at this cottage we were able to conveniently access both the beach and restaurants due to its centralized location. As a bonus, it’s also very close to the campground which houses a mini zoo of exotic birds, monkeys and lemurs to visit for free. People in the neighborhood seemed very friendly and provided a lot of tips while we were visiting. While the unit was a little older, we felt it was clean and well-maintained by the owners.

Wonderful Sanibel cottage!
We loved the cottage! Beds comfortable. Very nicely furnished with everything we needed. Cottage clean and comfortable. Easy bike ride to the beach. Includes bikes but we had our own so can’t speak to their condition. Lovely lanai. Pool very nice, quiet, clean. Neighbors very nice. Neighborhood quiet. Highly recommend this place.

Good location
The best thing about this place is the location. Convenient to all of Sanibel attractions, and there is a lot to do on the island. The pool was great and we almost always had it to ourselves. The place is fully stocked with everything you need. Just bring your clothes. We had a very nice visit.
