This house is two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a spacious layout with a large eat-in kitchen, a great room, a dining room, a living room with a fireplace. This house is ideal for family get-togethers. It is remodeled and re-decorated gourmet kitchen and great room. This stylish cottage beach house has new appliances. The great room walks out onto a split-level deck. Have dinner on the upper porch with a view of the ocean and lagoon. The lagoon offers wonderful bird watching events every season. The lower deck has a BBQ and a fire pit to enjoy with family and friends. The location of this house is just one block from the beach. Santa Maria’s(21st ave) is one of the most beautiful beaches in Santa Cruz, surfing, boogie boarding, skimboarding, fishing, and great for long walks. Explore the tide pools to find sea anemones, sea urchins and watch the otters play. This location is close to the fun-filled Santa Cruz. Boardwalk, the famous surfing spot Pleasure Point, and 41st Ave, where you will find various shops and restaurants. Minutes from Capitola Beach and the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor, where you will find beach volleyball, kayaks rentals, and great restaurants. An ideal morning is walking to coffee ( Starbucks ) and then another 4 minutes to the beach to enjoy your coffee while watching the waves crash onto the beach and cliffs below. ( Sunny Cove ) Within an hour's drive, you can see the full beauty of Monterey Bay by taking its scenic drive to Carmel, Seventeen Mile Drive, Pebble Beach Golf Course, and the Monterey Bay aquarium. Between our house and Monteray is Moss Landing, another fantastic area for kayaking and exploring the ocean wildlife. Amenities include high-speed WiFi for work-from-home guests. A full gourmet kitchen, fireplace, plasma TV with VCR/ DVD player, gas BBQ, outdoor gas fire pit, washer and dryer, linens, down comforters, feather pillows, and towels, both beach and bath towels. A security deposit and cleaning charge are required. This is a self-check in-house. Sleeps 6 - 8 One queen-size bed, one bunk bed with double-size mattresses, and 2 sofa beds. What a gorgeous house that was really comfortable for our family and well-stocked with games. You've done a beautiful job keeping the original charm of the house. We loved the close proximity to the beach for daily walks.

I booked my family and I this VRBO for a place to all stay together for my brother’s wedding. There were 6 of us and my 4 year old niece. It was everything advertised! Beautiful views from the patio, gorgeous walk to the beach, and walking distance to a Starbucks, which we appreciated. Although, there is a coffee machine in home as well! It was a perfect place to have meals together and get ready for my brothers wedding, and not a far drive to Los Gatos. My only feedback- the pull out beds are more of a full size bed instead of a queen, so if you plan to have people sleep on them, you may want to account for one adult on the pull out bed instead of two. The couch was comfy, so I slept there while my husband took the pull out! Host was very responsive and helpful, and there are tons of board games/coloring supplies for kiddos!

Not enough room for all the stars I’d give this rental. Comfy clean and spacious; as good or better than the pictures. Every item you would ever need in the kitchen, every item you would ever need for your time on the beach. Deck area is spectacular, close to the beach great views. Parking! Yes! We felt like guests borrowing a friend’s home. Thank you Lori!!!!!

Our family stayed for just under a week at this property. We enjoyed our visit but would likely not return to this property. Great: Location, with a view of the lagoon and beach, lovely outdoor dining area and sitting area with a firepit to sit at night. Good: The host was communicative, outdoor grill, nice assortment of beach chairs, body boards, and family games were provided. Bad: Showers leaked, obvious long-term rental with a lot of deferred maintenance (e.g., bathroom stair detached, hole in wall) stained sheets and towels, debris under couches and beds, etc. The patio door looking out over the lagoon was lovely to keep open, but there was no screen, so bugs would fly in starting around 4 p.m. Ugly: Ventilation fans did not appear to work, mustiness spell permeated the rental, mold in several areas, especially bathrooms. As a result of the mustiness, we ended up leaving a day early.

Our family enjoyed our stay at Hale Kai! The layout is perfect for families with a large dining table in the middle room and the large eat-in counter kitchen (which was very well-equipped). We used the grill and the gas firepit on the deck and enjoyed the views! A super-nice surpise were the VCRs and VHS movies...my 4 year old grandson LOVED the Disney movies! A few things did detract from our visit: There were temporary street plates in front of the house on Portola Drive, which made a lot of noise at night (but who can predict the utility company schedule?), some grime on the floors when we arrived and pet odors in some of the rooms. To Lori's credit, I didn't contact her during our stay simply because we weren't there much during the day and we didn't want to have to repack our things for a cleaning crew. I did let her know upon check out though, so it could be rectified for the next visitor. The front yard, outdoor shower, beach gear and numerous amenities inside the house were a wonderful touch!

Our family enjoyed the open space within the home. The beds and couches were very comfortable. The atmosphere was relaxing and the beach was a 4 minute walk, which was perfect. We appreciated use of the beach chairs and beach toys.

We came to stay at Hale Kai just a few days after all the big storms that had hit Santa Cruz this January 2023. I was coming from the East Coast to see my son and daughter in law and meet my new granddaughter for the first time. Lori kept us up to date on how their place was doing during the storm. Hale Kai was not affected even though it is so close to the beach. I knew we were just coming to visit and spend time together. Being originally from Santa Cruz, we didn't need to do any real sight seeing. The house was darling. Made you feel like you were staying in a Sweet Hawaiian Bungalow. The house is furnished beautifully with lots of Hawaiian furniture and memorabilia. There is a fireplace that works in the living room, but we chose to spend most of our time in the family room right off the kitchen. For a rental. this house had just about everything you need to cook in style. I was very impressed by the great assortment of everything you need to make a gourmet meal. The dining table in the formal dining room easily fits 8-10 for sit down dinner or there is the sit up center bar with stools in the kitchen. The bathrooms were filled with everything one might need in case you forgot something. I would love to go back and use their back patio and gas fire area when the weather is better. There is an awesome beach and ocean view from the family room and also on the upper deck seating outside area. I can't say enough good things about Hale Kai. I look forward to staying again in the future. We had just a wonderful, relaxing time with the 4 of us. I can't wait to rock my baby girl on the front porch in the big rockers surrounding the lush hawaiian gardens the next time we come.
This is one of those precious gems that you want to keep to yourself and not share how wonderful it is, but I just can't.

We really loved this house and it’s location. You can walk to the beach. It’s a short drive to Capitola, Soquel, and other places. We brought my 88 year old Mom out for a reunion with our family, which included grand & great grandchildren. The house had plenty of outdoor room , as well as indoor. We would love to stay there again!

This house has everything!! We loved our short walk to the beach and beautiful views of the deck from the back decks. It’s right off of a pretty main road it we weren’t bothered by traffic noise at all! Great place for families. The kids loved the toys and tons of VHS movies. Blast from the past.

Great location
I stayed at this house for my 5 year-old-son spring break and my older parents. The house was in great location very close to the boardwalk which my son enjoyed. Also short drive to roaring camp railroad which I also recommend. My son and I enjoyed walking to the beach to watch the sunset and she had plenty of beach toys so you dont have to worry about bringing your own. I am sure we ill come back in future!

Big & lots of rooms. Big kitchen well stocked. Views were amazing from decks. Lots of out door space for little ones to run around. Short fun walk to the beach. Library was great & lots of games. Steep drive way beware of scraping on low cars. Overall had a wonderful time. Can't wait to come back

The layout is great! Having 2 living areas was terrific since we had our teenage kids and they needed an indoor space to hang out too. The front room couch pulls out and slept 2 kids comfortably all week.
The back living area is nice and runs alongside the kitchen counter with several seats. You can easily have breakfast with the whole family and not fee cramped at all. I loved how open those 2 rooms were.
The back deck is fantastic! You can hang out up top and see/listen to the ocean or you can light the fireplace and chat. I spent quite a bit of time out on the deck in the mornings and in the evenings. Great size and layout.
The front yard is the first thing you will stop and appreciate when you arrive. It’s definitely a well maintained area and very private. It’s like having a second back yard. Loved the outdoor shower to get rid of the sand.
The location is also fantastic. You can easily walk to the beach, very short drives to the boardwalk attractions and restaurants. You are literally short drives from beautiful rugged coastline views and towering redwoods. I already have ideas on things to go do and see next time!

Great family cottage near the beach.
We had a wonderful time with family at Lori’s house near the beach. Comfortable, well-stocked home with all you need for days at the beach. There was some construction going on next door during the day, but looks like it should be finishing up soon. Easy walk to the beach and short drive to downtown Santa Cruz, Pleasure Point or Capitola.

Nice family trip
This is a cute house that is nicely decorated with a beach vibe. It is very close to a great little beach. You can see it from the deck and walk across the street to get to it. We had 4 adults and a toddler and it worked just fine for us. If it was warmer, I would have enjoyed the outside shower after a trip to the beach.
