Wanting somewhere close enough for walking to bus/train location, with coffee outside before 6am, the location was perfect. There is disagreement amongst other reviews as to whether it is a slum area. This is the view of a visitor who also happens to hold an (Indian) post-grad certificate in urban development.
It is a slum, but it's a reasonably well serviced one (in terms of water provision, sewage, garbage collection etc). The residences viewable from my balcony were certainly beneath local building standards. It's as much a commercial slum as it is a residual one, but I found it a comfortable place to be (speaking as a man). The small-scale commercial nature of the area aligns with a traditional hard working community which felt safe.
The muezzin sounded incredible early morning.
