About this bed and breakfast

Lakefront Peace. Forest Calm. A retreat from the city. Get out on the water. Get cozy with a book. Watch eagles and osprey with your morning coffee. Or toast marshmallow over the firepit at the beach. This peaceful getaway is the huge downstairs apartment in the house our family has lived in for over 50 years. It's a self-contained unit, with a full, well-supplied kitchen, laundry facilities, very comfortable beds, privacy and quiet. It's hard to say which is the most wonderful feature of the apartment. Is it the extremely comfortable beds? Is it the friendly living room with its lovely gas fireplace? Is it the spacious layout, with enough room to comfortably hold a large crowd, yet which also has plenty of nooks and corners for privacy and rest? Or is it the patio? The gardens? The trees? The flowers? The chickens? Those are all wonderful. But surely the best feature is the lake--Ames Lake, a private, quiet, clean, delightful oasis, home to beavers, eagles, buffle-heads, perch, trout, dragonflies and kingfishers. Internal-combustion engines aren't allowed on the lake, which helps to keep it quiet and peaceful. Please note: This property is not appropriate for people with pet allergies or asthma, as the house has been lived in for 60 years, and many animals have lived here and visited. It is also not appropriate for people who smoke, inside or out. This is the only property we own. We're a family. Not a corporation renting out hundreds of homes. We welcome you as our guests.

This house is located in a quiet neighborhood with great views of the lake. This is an older house but is very clean & comfortable.

We had an amazing vacation in the Seattle area and it wouldn't have been the same without this fantastic place on a beautiful lake! Kim was a great host and we hope to go back again!

Beautiful lake view. Nice "out of town" but close to town location for working in Bellevue. A great amount of space for a family or two couples, fairly priced for all that room. Great internet speeds for telecommuting. The host, Kim, was great, very communicative and helpful. Older property that could benefit from a bit more maintenance. If you are sensitive to mildew, proceed with caution. Overall, good for a "lake cabin" experience.

We knew from the photos and reviews that this property is very dated, and that was fine with us, but the unexpected ant issue was really terrible. Over the week, we killed HUNDREDS of very large black ants in EVERY room of the apartment. I bought ant traps the first day we were there (what a lovely way to start a vacation!) and asked the host to also address the issue. She said previous guests had left "crumbs" everywhere, but the ants were in every single room of the apartment, not just the kitchen. It was gross. I absolutely would have sought out an alternate place to stay except I figured I would never get my money back from VRBO and we just could not afford to double down for a hotel all week. In addition, the bathtub and bathroom sink drained very slowly, and the kitchen sink faucet was broken such that it would only stay on if it was at full blast, or it shut itself off. When guests refer to the apartment as "dated," it's things like the one toilet being round (not elongated as most are now) and low to the ground that you will really notice. It was also very cold in the apartment. The thermostat was controlled by the main house upstairs, so we could not control it. We texted the host immediately upon arrival asking that it be turned up as it was 59 degrees in the apartment. The gas fireplace was a wonderful source of heat but only for the main room/kitchen. The bedrooms were cold. I would not allow a child to sleep in the top bunk of the bunkbed because the floor below is cement with various pieces of remnant carpet on it. It would be a very hard fall if someone rolled out of the bed. My sons did use the paddleboat and that was fun until we noticed that a crack in the bottom that had been previously sealed was leaking, so we did not allow them to use it again since the boom was taking on water on one side. This house sits on a pretty lake in a very nice location, quite convenient to Seattle. It was quiet and private as advertised. It is also very spacious. I was grateful for the washer and dryer. It was dated and not fancy, but I expected that for the price and I was totally fine with that. The ant situation was terrible and really made it hard to enjoy our time in the space. It was not relaxing.

This home was close to a job site outside of Carnation. Three of us flew in from NY to help my brother-in-law build his new house, and coming back to the Ames Lake VRBO each night with its roominess and wonderful gas fireplace was the perfect end to a hard day of work.
