Waterfront living on a quiet lake. Pet Friendly.
About this bed and breakfast
Lakefront Peace. Forest Calm. A retreat from the city. Get out on the water. Get cozy with a book. Watch eagles and osprey with your morning coffee. Or toast marshmallow over the firepit at the beach. This peaceful getaway is the huge downstairs apartment in the house our family has lived in for over 50 years. It's a self-contained unit, with a full, well-supplied kitchen, laundry facilities, very comfortable beds, privacy and quiet. It's hard to say which is the most wonderful feature of the apartment. Is it the extremely comfortable beds? Is it the friendly living room with its lovely gas fireplace? Is it the spacious layout, with enough room to comfortably hold a large crowd, yet which also has plenty of nooks and corners for privacy and rest? Or is it the patio? The gardens? The trees? The flowers? The chickens? Those are all wonderful. But surely the best feature is the lake--Ames Lake, a private, quiet, clean, delightful oasis, home to beavers, eagles, buffle-heads, perch, trout, dragonflies and kingfishers. Internal-combustion engines aren't allowed on the lake, which helps to keep it quiet and peaceful. Please note: This property is not appropriate for people with pet allergies or asthma, as the house has been lived in for 60 years, and many animals have lived here and visited. It is also not appropriate for people who smoke, inside or out. This is the only property we own. We're a family. Not a corporation renting out hundreds of homes. We welcome you as our guests.

This house is located in a quiet neighborhood with great views of the lake. This is an older house but is very clean & comfortable.

What a fun and funky house. Kim was fantastic. Great place for a family and dogs.

We had an amazing vacation in the Seattle area and it wouldn't have been the same without this fantastic place on a beautiful lake! Kim was a great host and we hope to go back again!

Beautiful lake view. Nice "out of town" but close to town location for working in Bellevue. A great amount of space for a family or two couples, fairly priced for all that room. Great internet speeds for telecommuting. The host, Kim, was great, very communicative and helpful. Older property that could benefit from a bit more maintenance. If you are sensitive to mildew, proceed with caution. Overall, good for a "lake cabin" experience.

We knew from the photos and reviews that this property is very dated, and that was fine with us, but the unexpected ant issue was really terrible. Over the week, we killed HUNDREDS of very large black ants in EVERY room of the apartment. I bought ant traps the first day we were there (what a lovely way to start a vacation!) and asked the host to also address the issue. She said previous guests had left "crumbs" everywhere, but the ants were in every single room of the apartment, not just the kitchen. It was gross. I absolutely would have sought out an alternate place to stay except I figured I would never get my money back from VRBO and we just could not afford to double down for a hotel all week.
In addition, the bathtub and bathroom sink drained very slowly, and the kitchen sink faucet was broken such that it would only stay on if it was at full blast, or it shut itself off. When guests refer to the apartment as "dated," it's things like the one toilet being round (not elongated as most are now) and low to the ground that you will really notice.
It was also very cold in the apartment. The thermostat was controlled by the main house upstairs, so we could not control it. We texted the host immediately upon arrival asking that it be turned up as it was 59 degrees in the apartment. The gas fireplace was a wonderful source of heat but only for the main room/kitchen. The bedrooms were cold.
I would not allow a child to sleep in the top bunk of the bunkbed because the floor below is cement with various pieces of remnant carpet on it. It would be a very hard fall if someone rolled out of the bed.
My sons did use the paddleboat and that was fun until we noticed that a crack in the bottom that had been previously sealed was leaking, so we did not allow them to use it again since the boom was taking on water on one side.
This house sits on a pretty lake in a very nice location, quite convenient to Seattle. It was quiet and private as advertised. It is also very spacious. I was grateful for the washer and dryer. It was dated and not fancy, but I expected that for the price and I was totally fine with that. The ant situation was terrible and really made it hard to enjoy our time in the space. It was not relaxing.

This home was close to a job site outside of Carnation. Three of us flew in from NY to help my brother-in-law build his new house, and coming back to the Ames Lake VRBO each night with its roominess and wonderful gas fireplace was the perfect end to a hard day of work.

The house was really cozy and had plenty of space. It was very well stocked with everything you could possibly need. The beds were very comfortable, there were plenty of towels. The owner was easy to communicate with and was quick to respond. There was plenty of inside seating and outside seating. The lakeside location outshines every other amenity, however! It was peaceful and simply gorgeous. The kids had a blast paddling their grandmother around in the paddleboat and the floating lounge chairs were also a big hit. I am so happy to have found this gem! We will definitely be back!

Spacious older basement apartment on lake
Read the description carefully, it is accurate. This is an older spacious basement apartment. It was clean, but worn and could use updating. There are steep stairs to the lake. The lake is charming and communication with host was excellent. If you are looking for a family/dog friendly vacation, this might be your place. If you want an upscale experience, this is not your place.

more of a camp
This place seemed more of a camp than an apartment. Being in the basement, it was cold and damp even with a dehumidifier. There was a damp smell that we tried to cover up with air fresheners. Kim was a very nice and accommodating host.

Great location, spacious & clean
This was perfect for our visit! We had lots of space for a big family to spread out & the beds were very comfortable.
We were in the area visiting family, so we only slept & ate breakfast, otherwise we were gone.
As others have noted, the driveway is tricky, but Kim's directions make it easy to find. It is a lower level unit, with an odd layout, in an older building, which is exactly what was shown in the pictures.

I am so glad that we found this property. It was a great value! The location was perfect. The space was absolutely enormous and had everything that we needed. The owner was wonderful and very communicative. Unfortunately when we were there the weather was not great but we would love to stay there again in the summer months and take advantage of the beautiful spot right on the water! I wholeheartedly recommend this property.

Well equiped kitchen and boat house, lots of boats, floats and pool noodles. Nice dock to fish from. Spacious, kid friendly and kind host. My 2 year old had a blast feeding the chickens.

Had a comfortable stay here. Close to many pumpkin patches and loved driving past farms and historic barns to arrive at the lake. Queen bed was very comfortable (I didn’t try the others myself), lots of towels, extra blankets etc. nicely stocked kitchen. Has a very “cabin at the lake” feel to it including fireplace that operates with the touch of a button. Not many cons except a bit hard to find at night in the rain, steep driveway is ok but not that easy to navigate in the dark, and not sure the doors all lock including slider door (am guessing the neighborhood is so safe that it hasn’t been a priority but I would feel better when staying without my husband if all the locks worked). Happy hour at dusk on the dock was glorious! I recommend it in the fall for sure.

The pictures do not do justice, as to the size of this place. It very much fit our needs and beyond. There's so much to do. Swimming, boating, fishing, hiking...the list goes on. It's a quiet and relaxing place. Kim's overview book ....there's a page in it that's absolutely hilarious. She's very nice, funny, and accommodating. Fyi, the most firm bed is in the master bedroom. The softest is in the back single bedroom. The "natural a/c" is no joke. I was cold! We loved the whole trip. Can't wait to go back!

This is our second summer booking this property as a family getaway. We live quite close to Redmond but it feels like a world away with the neighborhood and the lake being so quiet and comfortable. Kim is a fabulous host with a wonderful lakeside property to share. Our first impression of the home last summer (2020) when we walked into the basement was that it was outdated but incredibly clean... then we took a gander down to the dock and were transported to a special place that outweighed any hesitancy we had with the age of the house itself. We had space for our teenage kids to sleep in each morning while others woke up early... we had space for 1000 piece puzzles and those who were quietly reading... we had space for those who wanted to nap after a long day at the lake and those who wanted to sit and talk. In addition, as a runner, it was a challenging course to run around the lake but so worth it as the neighborhood is wonderful. We will be back!

We had a very pleasant stay. The. location is beautiful with gorgeous scenery, it was quiet and private, and our host was friendly and responsive. Appliances were up to date and functioned well. However, we did have a couple issues: when we arrived the place had an unpleasant odor, which diminished over time; also the watercraft (pontoon boat and paddle boats) did not function as they should have. Those problems did not detract from our stay, but future guests should be aware. The owner acknowledged the issues and might have fixed them after our stay.
