Direct waterfront overlooking forever wild forest on a hidden dead end street
About this cabin rental
Situated in Bellmont, this lovely cabin for $256 per night is a fantastic option for your next break. *Total Solar Eclipse April 2024 & Easter week in the Adirondacks - now booking* Summer booking dates now open! New for 2024: Renovated outbuilding named the Shotgun Shack will be extra sleeping quarters with a set of bunk beds, plus a mini kitchen (sans stove/oven), and bathroom with walk-in shower. This is in the process and should be completed by May. A secluded oasis directly on the magnificent Upper Chateaugay Lake, this property has been completely remodeled inside and out in the last 18 years and includes a major update annually. Located as the second to last house on a dead-end private road, yet directly in-front of the deepest part of the lake at 70 feet deep, this house and property is ideal for a get-away. Upper Chateaugay Lake leads into the Lower Chateaugay Lake via the Narrows for a total of 9 miles. The property, on the East shores and on a very gentle slope with 106 feet of direct lake-front, has breathtaking views of unspoiled, NY State parkland and mountains. Be sure not to miss the unbelievable sunsets across the lake to the West with bright oranges and purples - true eye candy. Of course, another benefit of spectacular sunsets is the ability to sleep in during the mornings without being awoken by beams of sun in the early hours. Additionally, stargazing at night will enable you to see more stars in one night than in a lifetime. Clear, crisp and full of memories. Each room of the house has been remodeled, including the Mahogany master bedroom with a log king size bed & L-shape workstation overlooking the lake, Douglas Fir guest room with built-in full-size bed, slated side entryway, cedar bathroom with granite and terra cotta walk-in, full-size shower plus a granite kitchen with brand new tiled floor, and Pine tongue-and-groove dining nook and living room with new carpet, sofa, & matching ADK chair. Both bedrooms have plenty of closet space and nightstands/tables. Grand views of the lake are easily visible from the master, side entryway, dining nook and living room. My cabin is an L-shaped ranch with views of the lake from all angles. The expanded U-shaped dock is one great option to hang out. The dock extension creates a large area to be on the waters edge: A 16 x 18 dock with a built-in bench and a 14 x 4 catwalk combining with the original 16 x 6 dock to form a large U-shaped dock party area. From here, entry into the refreshing waters of Upper Chateaugay is easily done multiple ways: via the extra-wide (10 feet) staircase on the right side of the property, which is where we usually hop into/out of the water with our kayaks and canoes, but also there our stairs at the end of the original dock, plus a ladder from the catwalk. In any case, you are able to walk out 10 - 15 feet before being over your head. The lake bottom is firm, not soft and mucky, with a huge swath of rocks cleared for easy walking. The party dock will be your favorite place. Your next favorite places will be the new lean-to and 12x12 floating deck, each built in 2018 and each offering cool areas to relax by the waters edge and find your inner happiness while enjoying a cocktail. Challenge yourself to sleep outside yet protected from the elements in the custom-built lean-to, made from cedar and hemlock. Or find yourself gazing at the lake on one of the new Adirondack chairs with built-in footrest and rocker. New for 2022 was a 32' x 6' dock in front of the lean-to. This dock enables you to see a larger portion of the lake while enveloping yourself in nature. Boat docking is available for a fee. New for 2024 will probably be a renovated out-building with one set of bunkbeds & a full-size bed, along with a bathroom with walk-in shower. If completed, you are welcome to use but sheets & towels will not be provided. The outdoor stone porch area, reached directly from the side entryway, allows for great meals on the picnic table while watching the loons on the lake, as well as camp fire stories at the firepit area in the evening. The deck with BBQ wedge area is perfect for outdoor enjoyment. Lawn games are delightfully played on the expansive lawn on in front of the shotgun shack, which is the storage building housing all water toys (lifejackets, noodles, paddles, wet suits, etc) for your use. Upper Chateaugay Lake is regarded as one of the Top Fishing Waters by NY State Department of Environmental Conservation for its Rainbow Trout, Lake Trout, Small Mouth Bass, and Landlocked Salmon. Kayaking, canoeing, and fishing are idyllic during the morning or evening hours when the lake is glassy, while sailing can be enjoyed when the breeze kicks in during the afternoons. New in 2022 was a 6-pack boat rack for easy carrying. Of course, boating can be enjoyed anytime, and kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards are included in the rental. For the Olympian hopefuls, swimming across the lake is about one and a half miles. The U-turn driveway has great curb appeal, inviting guests to enjoy their stay at my home. Even during the height of the summer season, you can find peace and true tranquility. I have two neighbors and our houses are far apart: one is blocked by a new wood fence, and the other I can see the side of their house. There are only 594 property owners on the Upper & Lower lakes (9 miles of lake) and most of those are located on the smaller, Lower lake. On any given hot afternoon in July or August, one can easily count the number of boaters on a single hand for there is little boat traffic on the larger part, Upper, of the Chateaugay Lakes. In essence, my property is very private and secluded, with little external noise except for the wind, birds, waves and the occasional woodpecker and loon. The main road, Route 374, is three miles away and leads to nearby antique shopping, ice cream stands, restaurants, pizza parlors, delis, bakeries, convenient stores, farm stands, windmill farms, the NY State boat launch and mountainous hiking trails. Further out, it'll bring you to Malone, fairgrounds, Montreal, Saranac, Lake Placid, Plattsburgh, Vermont, large grocery stores, shopping malls, and movie theaters. Included in the rental is a three-person canoe, a two-person kayak, two single-person kayaks, two stand-up boards, life vests and noodles, a 8x10 swim float (platform) 100 feet out and in 15' of water. Life vests, noodles, and lawn games are located in a separate, outdoor shed. Suggested boating excursions include paddling to the beginning of the south inlet, at the very end of the Upper Lake, and meandering the waterways to the numerous beaver damns more than a mile in. Or make your way to the infamous sand bar at the edge of the Narrows for a game of frisbee in ankle-deep water and an afternoon picnic on the wide beach. Novices and experts will enjoy the adventures to be had. Firewood is present but is not to be used but can be delivered easily by a local guy. Also included are portable chairs, gas and charcoal BBQ's for outdoor enjoyment. Lastly, the number of people allowed to stay at my house is limited to a maximum of 6, one king-size bed & one full-size bed. This is to discourage large parties of people. Check in time is 3:30 and check out time is 10:30. Peak summer rentals run Saturday to Saturday from the last week of June until Labor Day. Mid-week rentals are available in other months. 70 other pictures can be viewed at Facebook. You will still have to tidy the place up, empty the refrigerator and remove all of your belongings. My property manager will clean and disinfect all rooms, surfaces, remove the garbage, vacuum, & replace the sheets & towels, which are included in the rental. The on-line calendar is updated as soon as a reservation is booked and is always up to date. I respond to all inquiries within 24 hours except on weekends when I am in the Adirondacks. What this place is not: It's not Lake George or Sacandaga Lake with constant boat traffic. It's not Saratoga Lake with neighbors every 50 feet apart. It's not Lake Placid with confined tourism. It's not Chazy Lake, with a main road seen and heard by half the lake of only 3 miles long. It's not on the Narrows or the Lower lake (of Chateaugay Lake), where the lake is more shallow, congested, and populated. It's not on the West side, where the sun rises at 6 a.m. during the summer. In summary, Upper Chateaugay Lake is by far the biggest and best lake in the northern Adirondacks as well as my home bringing a touch of elegance and grandeur. Please note: the on-line Google maps shows Hemlock Lane not as a dead-end. It is a dead-end and my house is the second to last house of a total of 6 houses. Note: You must purchase the rental insurance in case you need to cancel. 3-night minimum for Spring and Fall dates. 7-night minimum for peak season, with rentals starting & ending on Saturday. All fees are included except a boat docking fee, if you plan to dock a boat. Review 'We were very anxious about staying at this cabin and also getting to know this part of the Adirondacks, which we had never been to before this trip. When we first came across this on VRBO, right away we knew it was going to be special. We both felt that it was the right cabin in the right location. Our instinct wasn’t wrong! The house is nestled on this dead-end road, lakefront with spectacular views of the lake. The sunsets are amazing whether you are fishing from the dock or just sitting at the nice platform overlooking the lake relaxing in the comfortable Adirondack chairs. The place is organized and has everything that you could possibly need for cooking, baking, grilling, etc. Then at night you can gaze at the stars sitting by the fire ring enjoying the evening. One of the things that we enjoyed the most every night was to sit by the dock and listen to the sounds of the loons. It was so serene and soothing. I don’t believe we’ll ever forget those sounds for as long as we live. Tony & Melanie from New Jersey, August 2020

My husband and I have stayed at this property three times. We love returning to the lake. Waking up to the view never gets old. And we enjoy seeing the changes to the house, the outbuildings, and the docks. This place gets better and better!
We'll be back!

We had a terrific week, we had a wash out day when we first arrived, just relaxed in the cabin that day enjoying each other's company. The rest of the week we swam, canoed/kayaked, played yard games and went fishing. We did well catching smallmouth bass and perch. Joe is great he made us feel welcome and was responsive to anything we needed. We will come back !!

Beautiful property that offered everything we had hoped for. Close enough to Vermont for a day trip via the Ferry which was a nice experience. Joe was the best Host anyone could ask for and we are already planning our next trip. Thanks Joe!

The house had everything we needed for a relaxing long weekend. Well stocked kitchen and bathroom, the shower had great water pressure, the living room was cozy and comfortable, and the panoramic lake view was amazing! We stayed in early spring, it was chilly and had some rain, so we didn't go swimming or kayaking, but we enjoyed every minute whether it was hanging out on the dock, fires on the patio or morning coffee in the lean-to. We have rented dozens of houses and cabins over the years, and this was one of the best.

A wonderful property if you're truly looking to get off of the grid. Beautiful dock, well-stocked in terms of utensils, kayaks, games, DVDs, etc. The new dock is awesome and the lake is truly a special place.

Our family stayed at this house for a week and had a great time - the house is cozy and had everything we needed and VERY comfortable beds. Upper Chauteaugay lake with the mountains around it is absolutely beautiful and Joe provides so much so that you can enjoy it - multiple kayaks, stand up paddle boards, life jackets and more - it was fantastic to have all of this to use and we got out on the lake every day. The property around the cabin is set up beautifully so that you can enjoy the views from various spots- although neighbors were very close on either side, they were quiet and the lake as a whole didn't have a ton of loud motor boats when we were there, which was really nice. We loved the lean to and had fires in the fire pit every night, watched the sun set, and listened to the loons. Our family had a wonderful, peaceful week.

Amazing family weekend
This was an amazing time. The owner was keeping me updating on everything, provided so much information about the area and things to do. They also provided everything we could hope for to have a great time at the lake and games for in the evening. Everyone is already asking to go back.

Check in an check out process was extremely easy. The privacy and view were perfect. We enjoyed the canoe, kayaks, and paddleboards. The water was a little too chilly for much swimming but my kids enjoyed splashing around on the warmer days. We caught some nice fish, read in the hammock and on the patio, and completely relaxed. Just what we were looking for!

Had a wonderful time at this location. The scenery was absolutely beautiful and it was so quiet. The was the perfect long weekend getaway we needed. We would definitely go back again. **Do pay attention to the direction he gives once you get into the little side roads as the gps gets pretty confused as you get closer to the house***

The location was absolutely perfect. It was quiet, peaceful and really beautiful. We enjoyed using the yard games and kayaks and canoe. We also enjoyed the property owners interesting souvenirs and photos from his travels. I wasn't impressed with the cleanliness of the cabin considering the additional cleaning fee, that may be something the property owner needs to discuss with the property manager. And if suggestions for updates are taken into consideration, I would recommend replacing the carpet in the living room.

My husband and I enjoyed staying at this stunning and serene property. While we were provided activities to do in the area I literally didn't leave the entire week because nothing could compare to it, so I suggest packing groceries. The lake is beautiful and quiet. I read the high reviews before booking and it sure lived up to the wonderful descriptions. I look forward to returning in the future.

The cottage is cozy, but the main attraction here is Upper Chateaugay Lake, which is beautiful. The property is right on the lake, shaded by pine trees, with multiple docks/platforms, and a lean-to for different views in different types of weather (it's in the mountains, so the weather can change very quickly). The sunsets in particular are stunning--different every night, and they seem to last for hours. The location is very remote, so good for folks who like wildlife, swimming, hiking, and boating of all kinds. Water access isn't as easy as it might be, as you'll need to carry them up and down stairs (and there is nowhere to tie them up in the water), but once you've got them in there are lots of places to explore around the lake. Bring water shoes as the shoreline is rocky. There are two grills (gas and charcoal) and a large picnic table for outdoor dining. There are neighboring houses on both sides; one is hidden by a fence, and the other oriented in a different direction, so we weren't overly conscious of them, except on the weekends, when they got quite noisy; happily, weekdays were beautifully quiet. Watersports on the lake can also get loud (jet-skies, speed boats, etc.). But all told, we loved our stay!

We had a wonderful stay at the Anchor. It was so peaceful and relaxing but there was also plenty to do - the perfect mix. Joe was an excellent host and has an amazing property. It has everything you could ever need. Joe was also very communicative - suggesting things to do. We will definitely look to return - maybe a little earlier in the season when we can take advantage of the lake.

This is a great lake location. If you are looking to get some needed quite. This is the place. It is right next to the lake with great access. Please note you are way out in the woods. So stop, first to get the food and drinks you will need. This is a true cabin on the lake. I am sure you enjoy this place as much as we did.

Wonderful stay; no provisions for tying up a boat
We had a great time visiting "The Anchor." The cabin and the property were beautiful; the tranquility and the views were fantastic!
The only concern we had was when we arrived with our pontoon boat, we found there was no place to tie-up. Joe, the owner, was understandably anxious that we not tie up to his deck or raft, as they're not equipped to anchor a boat, especially if a storm should arise. He said when people ask, he makes this clear. It never occurred to us to ask, we supposed that many/most people spending a week at the lake would have a boat. My only suggestion to Joe w/b that he mention "no boat tie-up" in the description of his property.
Except for that one surprise, "The Anchor" was ideal for us, and if sometime in the future it could accommodate a boat, we'd love to come back!

A beautiful stay in the Adirondacks
The cottage is in the perfect location! The lake is gorgous and there is an expansive dock system to enjoy the waterfront property. There was some rain and wind during our stay, but the lean-to provided shelter to sip wine and enjoy the views.
The cottage has everything you need to enjoy the remote Adirondacks. I would definately recommend this place!!
Ps- I saw a porcupine on the road to cottage!!!

Slice of Heaven
This cabin is a perfect place to get away from it all. The view is to die for and the owner has definitely put great care in utilizing the property to its greatest potential to enjoy the outdoors. Plenty of kayaks and paddle boards to get out there as well. Best time is the morning and evening as the wind really picks up through the main part of the lake mid day.
The cabin is perfect for a small family. The flow of the space was nice and comfortable. My son loved his built in bed and I loved waking up to the views of the water each morning. From the pictures, I was a little worried about the dining area and family room being too small but they are perfect ... Windows facing the water and a fireplace that was really the big winner in the rainy days we had. We loved playing uno around the coffee table each night. Oh and all the decorations around the house from the owners travels, awesome! Also just to note, I had to log into a few meetings mid week for work and had no problem doing video conferences with the WiFi.
As Joe says, this is NOT like the other ‘big’ lakes in ADK but it was exactly what I was looking for ... tranquility, sunsets, water fun ... all in a perfect spot to enjoy all that northern ADK has to offer.
Some pointers - local corner store does have basics and they were great there - for bigger runs, definitely grab any supplies needed driving in from Saranac. Owlyout was a good local place to eat. Definitely check out the windmill farm. My vote is a hot tub and double shower head in the shower for upgrades next year Joe! :)
Thank you for sharing your property, it was truly outstanding.

Excellent spot
Beautiful view, house is super clean. We had a wonderful stay. The property owner was very helpful during our stay with any questions we had. It’s a bit windy mid day for going out on the lake but early morning and early evening it’s just gorgeous! Would definitely stay there again!!

Awesome
The place was great! It's location is great if you don't want to be near anything and just get away (just bring your food with you). The house is very nice, with everything you need there. It was very clean; however, there was a mouse and several ants even though our food was all sealed up. Not a big deal, since the rest was near perfect!

Great place in a great location
This was our first time in the area (from southern Ontario) and we really enjoyed our stay. The cottage had everything we were looking for including location, amenities, water activities, views and privacy. We also enjoyed the small town of Lyon Mountain including hiking and talking with locals but also really enjoyed going to Lake Placid and Burlington for day trips.
