Rooms blocked without warning over a payment dispute – shocking and unacceptable treatment by owner.

Good location even though street under construction as a light railway is being build in front of house. Early check in, water, cookies (halva), sunscreen sachets on arrival. All fine, size of rooms and facilities ok, good air-con.

A truly horrible experience. We returned from the beach to find our room doors blocked. At reception, we were told to wait because staff were on a break – leaving us stranded in our beachwear, without phones or wallets, which were inside the room. It turned out the owner had ordered the rooms blocked because he wanted immediate full payment, despite our previous discussion in which we had been told we could settle the bill the following day (the receptionist finishing his shift needed to check how to prepare the invoices). What was most shocking was the owner's demand that one of us remain at reception while the other went to retrieve the wallet to pay – effectively asking us to leave a "hostage". Remember, we were in swimsuits and had no access to our belongings. Apparently, this was related to a disagreement over VAT charges (which we eventually gave up disputing) and the fact that we had upset a young receptionist. Admittedly, the discussion was not particularly pleasant, but there was no shouting, swearing or threatening behavior (we were with kids too). Our credit card details and passports were already on file, so blocking our rooms and treating us this way was completely disproportionate and unacceptable. To make matters worse, CCTV cameras appeared to monitor us throughout the building, including areas where, with the room doors open, they could potentially see inside the room from the corridor. The owner's conduct was deeply disturbing. We left feeling shocked and distressed, and this incident seriously dampened our entire holiday. All over a disagreement about VAT and an unpleasant conversation with a receptionist. Absolutely unacceptable.
