Sheraton Shanghai Chongming Hotel

We chose this hotel specifically for its proximity to the National Nature Reserve, and it did not disappoint! It was the perfect base for our exploration of the UNESC|O World Heritage Site, which is the only one in Shanghai. Beyond the unbeatable location, our room was spacious and comfortable. The staff was riendly and welcoming, with great tips for the local area. Highly recommend!

Breakfast was very good - a standard sort of hotel buffet. There was a decent selection of western and Chinese options and it all appeared fresh. Staff were organised and helpful and even remembered what drinks we'd had the previous day and brought these to our table without them being requested. Impressive. The hotel pool (indoor) and kids play areas were clean and of a good size. They were well maintained and not neglected like many hotels in China these days. The hotel's location is good for getting to the Dongtan Wetland Park - around 15mins in a taxi. The hotel location is also good for going out cycling or running around this eastern end of the island where it is really quiet and sleepy and it isn't long before your on the deserted sea front or among the flat-flat fields. This part of the island is uncannily flat. We will definitely be going back to this hotel and to visit more of the eastern side of Chongming Island.

We had our evening meals at the hotel and the western restaurant is fine and the food is perfectly edible, it's mediocre at best. Not all of the food on the menu was available. The Chinese options which I had on the first night were much nicer than the western food I had on my second night. Infact the local mushrooms and green vege were delicious but the burger I had on the second night was below average - lacking in taste, but fine. Initially I'd wanted a meat pizza but this was unavailable (never mind). The drinks menu was promising and they had a craft beer section which really piqued our interest but they didn't have most of the options on the menu and in the end they didn't even have any Erdinger and we had to drink a couple of bottles of ridiculously priced tiny (268ml) bottles of Hoegarden -- 68RMB (absolute daylight robbery). The hotel had some gimmicky bikes that could be hired. We hired the 4 wheeler and it was 150RMB per hour - an exorbitant price. I would recommend they get a fleet of normal basic bicycles for guests to hire free of charge or 100RMB per day, not per hour!
