Superb
Whalers' cottage is in a lovely spot with superb views from the terrace and the upstairs bedrooms over the nearby inlet. It is in very good proximity of the start to the Aotea track. Unfortunately, the third and last day of the track was exceptionally wet and we arrived back at the cottage soaking wet. We soon forgot our wet journey once we were back at the cozy and warm cottage and had dried ourselves. It is a great place to relax and hang out with some friends. It is comfortable and fitted out with everything one needs for the stay.

Disappointing and over-priced stay in a quirky old kiwi batch.
The property was quiet and private, old fashioned and quirky as in a typical kiwi batch. The location was a bit remote and in the bush with a good view of the local bay. Access was not easy but manageable. Nice outdoor deck and seating area. The internet was great to have. We liked the older furniture in the lounge area and the quirky kiwi batch style but not for over $400p.n. Living off-grid was fun and a new experience.
The property was dirty with spiders and spider webs everywhere. The kitchen was cluttered and dirty with no room for our food to be stored. The cupboards were cluttered and dirty with old food and cleaning products, empty containers and even maggots appearing from the cupboard with pots and pans. The crockery was dirty and covered in cobwebs and the dining table was filthy. The freezer was full of ice and broken glass from a wine bottle and unusable. The lights upstairs did not work. The washing machine was dirty and had old soap powder encrusted in it. The hand wash dispenser in the kitchen was empty along with the body wash ones in the bathroom. Although a teapot and coffee plunger were provided, both were broken and unusable. There was a set of drawers in the kitchen area that were full of old out-of-date food. We paid over $400 per night to stay here and having stayed in hundreds of places around NZ and the world, expected a much better standard for that price.

Lovely and cosy
The cottage itself was lovely and cosy, and the views were fabulous. The location was perfect for what my family needed. Fenella was a wonderful host who was easily contactable and very helpful. I had a delightful stay and would definitely consider staying at the cottage again if I was to return to Great Barrier Island in the future.
The BBQ was rusty with an empty cereal box and old toys randomly hiding behind it, the bathroom trash can was half full on our arrival at the cottage, and there were also a dozen or so dead flies on window sills when we arrived. Rest of the cottage was tidy and clean though
