The house was very clean and included all amenities we needed. The description of the house was spot-on. The location makes it very walkable to the beach and a number of restaurants and shops. We loved sitting on the rooftop deck.

Upon arrival of the house we walked in and were immediately hit in the face with a horrendous odor and there was NO electricity. I called the owner and she informed me that the power had been turned off over a week prior to prepare for a storm and the power had not been turned back on. The house smelled awful with a mix of moth balls, mold, and musty. Not to mentioned the house was over 80 degrees inside.
We stopped at the grocery store on the way to the house and purchased groceries and had planed to put them in the fridge and freezer. But the fridge and freezer were not on, had mold in them (from having no power) and obviously the fridge and freezer were not cold.
So we used our own Clorox wipes to clean the fridge and put what we could in our cooler until the next day when the the fridge was good to go. So we lost some of our groceries overnight and had to buy more. Very frustrating.
There were bugs in the house. I had to kill two bugs upon arrival. One was a roach the other was just a fly or something similar.
By Sunday (our last full day) the home started to smell normal again.
Unfortunately we had very bad first impression of the house. It is the property owners responsibility to ensure the property is ready to receive guests. And in this instance the property was not ready.
The location of the home is awesome, close enough to walk / bike to a few restaurants and shops. Very close to the beach access too.
The top deck is awesome and has a great view.

Stay was very comfortable. Loved that there were bikes, kayak, fishing gear and great views from the decks.

Great beach house! Just a short walk to the ocean. The owners provided extra things (beach and sand supplies etc) in storage that we were happy to have for our stay. House was clean and relaxing. Very open and bright. Would stay again.

This place is wonderful. Great location! You are a short walk or golf cart ride to the beach, marina and shopping. House has everything you need. Communication with property owner was fast and easy. House is beautiful. The outside shower was a hit with my crew. We are looking forward to 2024 for our next stay.
Thank you for a wonderful place to stay for our vacation.

We enjoyed our stay at the Shelter. Rain meant we couldn’t enjoy the upper deck but the house had everything we needed for evening of games we brought with us and great location for exploring all our favorites on the island and hopping the ferry one afternoon “chasing the sun” to Ocracoke. Thank you!

We had 4 adults and my 3 yr old son. While my husband, dad and bil went fishing, my son and I walked to the beach, carrying tons of toys and a chair. Across the road was Teach's Lair Marina & Hatteras Sol Resturant and down a little further was Lee Robinson General Store. The house was all one level once you got up the stairs. Plenty of seating in the living room with two couches and plenty of chairs on the deck. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils. My only issue was the cleaning people which they might easily overlook small stuff with the amount of houses to clean. I’ve been in motels a lot worse.. We are planning on a visit next year at some point and would rent the house again.

We stayed for a short weekend in April and had the absolute best time! House is exactly as described and had nearly everything we needed at hand! Beds were comfortable, plenty of space, and property owner was available for any questions immediately! We would love to stay again! Beach access was easy to find and we went for morning and after dinner strolls every day! At night the upper deck was perfect for popsicles and star gazing! Had a lovely time with my family, brought home shell treasures found on the beach and got lots of rest and relaxation! Highly recommend!

Our family enjoyed our stay at the Shelter during Thanksgiving 2022!! We were close to the Ferry, Beach access and stores to shop. The location of the beach house was perfect and after a trip by Ferry to Ocracoke, we were thankful it was not far. We will miss Hatteras, until next time... The Shepherds

Cozy stay. Just wish I knew towels weren’t included. I called the owner and she professionally answered my questions. I’m thinking maybe no towels provided should be stated clearly.

Always enjoy coming Hatteras. And the house is right across from teach's lair Marina where we always go out of on longer days charter. The house had everything we needed and the top porch is great to watch the sunset over the sound. Definitely will be coming back.

We had a great week staying at the Shelter. The house was the perfect size for our family of four. The kids got their own space but the house wasn’t so huge where people disappear. We spent great quality time together. The house is clean and well equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. Thanks for hospitality!

We drove from Michigan and this was our first trip to OBX. The place was easy to find, clean neat and organized. The location was perfect for the 4 of us. Not too far from the highly traveled areas, the beaches were not overly conjested and we were near the charter boats and ferries. The local people and the resturants are excellent. Only down side was a few of the beach chairs were broken and we didn't realize that the towels and wash cloths were not included. Would HIGHLY recommend and plan to stay again.

This property was in close proximity to the beach. With the age of our children, we chose to drive to the closest beach access rather than walk, but if you had older kids, you could have walked.
There were unexpected amenities such as Brita Water Filter, ice cube trays,, popcorn machine, and sand toys, beach chairs and umbrella for the beach that we were happy to come across and use during our stay. The kitchen was well stocked with everything needed to make meals at home.
The property was spacious enough for our family of 5 to sleep comfortably and the location was quiet. The beds were comfortable and everything was in working condition. The decks were great for watching the sunset and feeling a breeze. The furniture was plentiful and everyone had space to relax outdoors.
We were however disappointed by a few things. While there were 2 bicycles available for use in the sports locker, each bike had a flat tire. While a hand air pump was available, we were unable to locate the proper attachment that would have allowed us to pump up the tires. Upon arrival, the kitchen smoke detector was chirping so we had to remove. We were also disappointed to find ants in the kitchen. We did locate some ant repellent in the house so were able to combat the issue, however it's not something that was enjoyable for our vacation. The property outside was also very bug-filled (spiders, mosquitos, roaches) which probably has a lot to do with the weather and humidity during the time of our stay. I'm not sure if the grounds are regularly sprayed with pest control, but if not, it would be a nice addition.
Overall we had an enjoyable stay.

OBX vacation
Great house and great location. There were a few issues but not a big deal. They need new beach chairs - the chairs are old and 2 didn’t work. Both back tires on the bikes were flat and off the rims so we couldn’t use the bikes. The master bath tub needs some drano. Other than that- great time!!

This was our first time in Hatteras and it was very early in the season, so it was chilly and a just a few stores were beginning to open. We loved the quiet of the area and the view of the sound and how close we were to the ferry.
Our grandsons loved the cottage and the first grader even drew a picture of it in his school journal, complete with top deck, hammocks and outdoor shower! We were so close to the beach and our section was quiet and beautiful.
On the downside, this cottage needs a lot of updating. The electrical outlets were loose, the fire alarms not in place, the tub drains did not close (a must if we had toddlers), and the nest seemed to always be on AC and even when we set it to heat, it reverted to AC. Another concern was the wooden railing from the upper deck, it was very loose and in need of repair. There were two bikes available, but we couldn’t keep the air in the tires, so never ventured too far.
The couches were comfortable and there was plenty of seating for four adults and two boys who were 7 and 9 and thought it was an amazing and fun place. The master bed was very comfortable too.
I mostly enjoyed the decks and especially the colorful polywood furniture on the top deck. There were lots of cute throw blankets to keep warm while sitting out in the cool temps.
Despite the needed repairs, the cottage worked for us and we had a good time. We enjoyed the popcorn maker and gathering around the large kitchen table. My husband said so much of the repairs were simple or cosmetic and he would like to be able to stay for free and do the updates if the owners wanted work done on it in the off season.
I hesitated in writing any kind of poor review because the shelter is roomy and comfortable. It just needs some updating and basic repairs. I

The Shelter of Hatteras is the perfect location to experience the village of Hatteras. Right of Route 12 and easy access to everything. You walk down to the beach within two minutes and will experience some of the best sunrises you will ever see.
The Shelter is close to access to the Ferry to go to Ocracoke Island. Locals are friendly to help you find where you should eat.
The Shelter is clean and spacy. Perfect to relax after a long day of exploring the area.
You can go up to the top level and sit and just enjoy the breeze or sit inside a screen in porch and have a cup of coffee.
My husband and I loved every moment of being at the Shelter while we explored the Outerbanks.
Don't forget to leave a note in the book for your host!
