I arrived in Bochum Main Station on Monday afternoon, the 26th October, and found the Garner Hotel in less than 15 minutes. Once booked in, I went up to my room on the 4th floor. I was more than surprised by Room Number 431. The word delighted is a more accurate and truthful way to phrase it! What I got was a large, spacious and comfortable room, well heated and with its own ensuite shower. The biggest surprise was the cooking faciltities, in the form of a cooker, with its own hob, and a microwave oven which was perfect for heating food. There was also a spacious fridge, which meant that I could store food bought during my 6 day stay in Bochum. I had paid for 6 nights, bed and breakfast: the latter I availed of on the last 3 days of my stay, cost 21 Euro per morning. This was not cheap, but the quality of the fare on offer made it worth the price I'd paid.
The hotel staff were polite, pleasant and patient, and the hotel dining room was spacious, comfortable and conjusive to the enjoyment of the food served there. Breakfast was a self service buffet and included hot (fried) food, as well as the more traditional German fare of cold cuts of meat and cheese etc. I was very glad to have chosen the Garner and, if I return to Bochum ( a distinct possibility!), I'll choose to stay again at the Garner hotel. The hotel is ideally situated, being about 15 minutes on foot from the main railway station, and lying right beside the pedestrain zone city centre that is a feature of so many German cities.
There was a small problem with the shower. The glass door that closes once you begin to shower still allowed water to flow out and, once it did, the floor surfacer got very wet. It was only a small problem, but I had to be careful when showering, although (alas!), it really didn't matter how careful you were / are, some of the shower water still found it's way out anyway.

conveniently situated to town, room to the garden were quiet. Rooms and bathrooms very clean.
The garden and pot plants looked neglected, cigarette ends all over the place in the garden. The ”lawn" shambles. The flower containers in front of the little terraced rooms are full of dried out weeds. The seating area neglected too, dirty ashtrays on the tables, tables not wiped. No service outside in the garden. The electrical outlet in the bathroom was taped, the hairdryer could not be used. Staff was a bit headless not quite knowing much about the running of the hotel. The breakfast was a far cry from this time last year and several times before when we stayed there.
