Mitengo House is a spectacular place that perfectly encapsulates and radiates Malawi's natural beauty – photos do not do this boutique hotel justice, but its name, meaning "trees," certainly does.
During my short stay, I enjoyed the delicious chambo fish with tomato sauce and rice. The charming waiter, Peter, shared that the locals mix the tomato sauce with rice, although, in my sheer ignorance, I did not. Maybe next time.
Lastly, I’m forever grateful to Tasmim for fetching my laptop when I forgetfully left it at the front desk. Smiling Alinafe was equally helpful in settling my bills when I checked out the next day.
I’ll recommend Mitengo House to anyone who cares about nature and appreciates feeling at home.

Exceptional Stay in a Stunning Location! The location is fantastic—convenient and beautiful, making it the perfect base to explore the area. The bar staff and cleaning team were incredibly friendly and attentive. A special shout-out to the two ladies at reception who made check-in smooth and effortless with their warm hospitality.
The room was stunning, spacious and thoughtfully designed, and the bathroom was absolutely gorgeous—a perfect touch of luxury. Every morning started off right with the amazing breakfast spread. The variety was impressive, catering to different tastes and preferences.
Upon arrival, I encountered a very unprofessional and discourteous reception experience from the gentleman at the front desk. Despite being quoted a specific rate prior to check-in, I was charged an additional US$58, which was explained the they charge their own rate of exchange and not that of Bookings.com. Out of the six hotels I stayed in across Africa, this was the only establishment that altered the rate upon arrival. And he was most adamant that this is the way it is and he will have to call management to alter - which confirmed my annoyance of waiting and wasting my time, after traveling and being tired and frustrated. If you can alter it SIR you should not be charging a different rate on Bookings.com this is setting false expectations for customers.
Moreover, I was not informed in advance that the lodge operates on solar power, which meant there was no access to plug/socket electricity in the mornings and sometimes in the early evenings—a major inconvenience. The Wi-Fi connection was extremely unreliable, making it challenging to work or stay connected during the day.
Overall, while the property itself was beautiful and might even have potential, the lack of transparency and poor service left a negative impression. I hope management addresses these issues to improve future guest experiences.
