Hotel Steinbock

The staff was AMAZING!!!! Everyone was very accommodating. Helped us with the luggage. Nice big windows overlooking the main road through town

Check in was weird. No real direction on where to check in. TONS of stairs with no lift. So be prepared to haul your bags up multiple flights of stairs unless you’re lucky to find a kind employee to help. Beds are so-so. One flat pillow. One small blanket. Felt more like a hostile than a hotel.

I loved the location -- a stone's throw from both the train station and the cable car to Grutschalp, and a very short walk to the grocery store. It was comfortable, the people were really nice and spoke English fluently. I stayed in a single room with a shared facilities. It was mid September and I never encountered another person either in the toilet room (two stalls at the stairs end of the hall, with shared sink) or in the shower (one shower at the other end of the hall). In fact, it was sold out at the time, but I never even encountered anyone else on the whole floor. The room itself had a sink, too, so you didn't have to leave the room to brush your teeth or wash your face. I loved that it's a restaurant, so I could just have a beer right there at the end of the day. I loved how close it was to the coop (groceries) and the train station. (Exit the train station to the west.) I loved the breakfast, too -- a really nice treat considering how expensive food can be in Switzerland. The valley itself is just jaw-dropping, and the hotel's location makes it really easy to explore. I got there quite early but they let me just drop my bag in the hall (with several other bags) until check-in time.

The key was a bit klunky -- basically attached to a little heavy club, I guess to keep it from getting stolen, but you could also just leave it at the desk when you go out, so that was nice. The rooms aren't very noise proof.

I was a single traveler, so I booked a small single (twin bed) room. It worked for me. Others in the group were couples and enjoyed larger rooms, bigger beds, and balconies. Overall 13 travelers were very satisfied.

The double room space was ok and a family can move around if there are no luggage lying around. The breakfast was quite nice with eggs, toast and cheese. There is a Coop on the ground floor, to make grocery shopping easier.

When you book the double room, the rooms are in a different location (1 minute walk across the main road) than the reception/breakfast area. That means, the mountain view is kind of missing . There was a big wall next to one of the windows, not a mountain view. The reception could be nicer. There are no lifts and have to take the stairs to go up the third floor. While doing the check-in, their magnetic swipe reader could not fetch my passport details, instead of manually typing (which I eventually protested to do on-behalf of them) they were bending the passport pages and swiping back and forth multiple times. What if they just tore my passport bio-data page just to fill in my name?
