Always stay here when in Udawalawe

A typical case of a bad decision.

Surrounded by only trees with few houses, it was quiet.

The indoor furniture looked shabby and dirty. The bathroom amenities were meager as well. Overall, it gave an old and rundown impression. The towels appeared worn out, and despite being washed, faint stains remained. The room was small, and the overall facilities seemed to be a mix of private and farm-like areas, with tools scattered around in a haphazard manner. It didn't give a welcoming atmosphere for guests. I have visited Sri Lanka over 40 times, but to be honest, spending 50,000 rs for one night is not worth it. There are plenty of better hotels available in Sri Lanka at this price point. Since it was my first time staying in this area, I thought choosing one of the most expensive hotels in the area would be a safe bet, but it turned out to be a typical case of a bad decision. Even at 25,000 rs per night, it still feels expensive.

Friendly, comfortable and child-friendly hotel which is an excellent base for elephant safaris

Kalu's Hideaway is a comfortable, spacious hotel set within lovely gardens with a beautiful pool. It's a great base for elephant safaris in Udawalawe national park. The hotel is quite, clean and well-looked after with good size rooms. It's worth noting that safaris are either 0600-0900 or 1500-1800 (which I think is probably universal across all hotels in this area) so you can plan your stay accordingly as there isn't much else to do apart from the safari (other than lounging around the pool!)

Great place to stay for Uda Walawe National Park

The great design of the hotel is very matching to the surrounding. Very quiet place, nice pool, friendly stuff. We stayed for 2 nights- and would highly recommend it if you want to visit the Uda Walawe National Park.

Wonderful hotel, excellent service, perfect for children

Kalu’s was the best place that we stayed while we were in Sri Lanka. We booked for three nights which was perfect with our two year old. The hotel arranged a safari and we saw so many elephants including a herd of around 30 with babies. We also went to the elephant transit home and they dropped us off and picked us up. The service was exceptional and the staff were so friendly towards our little boy. The infinity pool was gorgeous and we loved relaxing there and hearing all of the birds.

It was a pleasant stay for one night

We had a nice time there, we were even lucky to meet Kalu and his lovely wife who helped us enormously by taking our 1,5 year old babyboy for half an hour and walking with him around. The place is not ideal for little children but otherwise it was very relaxing. Both me and my husband had a massage in the spa, but we were not impressed, it was a very average massage. The breakfast also average. But lunch was pretty good.

Missing facilities for children, it wouldn't take much to do a kids corner or playroom there.

Quiet. They upgraded us for our honeymoon 😃

a few bugs but that comes hand in hand with staying in wildlife! drinks and vegetarian food were a little limited.

A perfect bolthole to relax in style, and explore Udawalawe National Park.

Kalu's Hideaway was a perfect launching pad for my Undawalawe safari, which the staff also organised for me upon my arrival. Somehow, I was the only guest at the property for my one night stay. The staff were attention to my every need, while also ensuring to leave me with my own space. The swimming pool was a great respite from the heat and humidity, and the property grounds were a delight to walk around. Dinner and breakfast were delicious and it wa great to learn that much of the produce was organically grown in the property's garden. And the icing on the cake - the great Sri Lankan cricketer Kalu's personal memorabilia on display in the property's mini-museum (if only he was there in person!).

The property and my experience was pretty near perfect. I'm sure there'll be some other guests to engage with when tourism picks up again and I return for another safari (which was excellent too).

Wonderful Hideaway in the middle of nowhere with very nice people.

The staff and owner were very kind and friendly. The food was georgeous and the room very cozy and clean. The pool and garden area was wonderful with a great view over a small lake.

We had nothing to complain! It was all in all a great stay!

5* Exceptional Stay!

The Hideaway more than exceeded our expectations! The wonderful staff went above and beyond to make our stay incredible - they gave us an upgrade on arrival to one of their deluxe suites which was gorgeous! The reception staff were more than happy to arrange everything for us for our safari. Delicious food, perfect location for the safari, great attention to detail and a very positive experience overall! 10/10 would recommend if you're planning on visiting Udawalawe!

We wouldn't have changed anything about the experience.

Good location and good facilities.

The cottage room, what we got unfortnately was terrible. We had to greeting and host a million of insects The other rooms may be ok, but we do not know.

super location - gorgeous grounds and lovely pool. staff very pleasant and attentive.

nothing really. bed could have been bigger - could easily have accommodated an extra large double which seems to be quite standard in Sri Lanka

Amazing place to stay near Udawalawe national park

This place was our favourite stay in Srí Lanka due to great facilities (pool, garden, table tennis etc) and the friendly welcome from the staff, combined with excellent food. 15 mins or so from the national park gate.

We lovedlovedloved our stay at Kalu's Hideaway and the safari. Everybody in the hotel was very friendly and welcoming. The room was big and clean. The garden is a dream and the pool as well. The food was delicious, the included breakfast was also very tasty. They organized everything with the safari, the hotel is close to the entrance of the nationalpark, so the way to the safari was near by. Everything was perfect during our stay - thank you very much Kalu`s Hideaway team!!
