About this house rental

Situated in Galena, this lovely house for $280 per night is a fantastic option for your next trip. Built in 1856 by Asa Haile, a licensed riverboat captain and successful mason, this classic Federal-style brick home with Greek Revival accents is located up on Quality Hill, where mansions overlook the entire historic district of Galena. A quick 5-minute walk (maybe a bit longer on the way back up) puts you directly on Galena's Main Street, named “One of America’s best Main Streets” by Fodor’s. The front porch is the key to your stay at Asa Haile House. The view is fantastic, whether with a cup of coffee watching the town wake up or an evening sunset out towards Horseshoe Mound. Some evenings lightbeams can be seen over by Pilot Knob as a barge searches its way up the Mississippi River. No matter what the season; spring, summer, fall or winter, the porch is AWESOME! Inside the house is a culmination of love and dedication as Pete & Tacie Campbell took ownership of the property in the early 1970s. Their influence can be enjoyed throughout the 2,700-sqf house as both were historians; Pete ran the Illinois state historic sites in Galena and Tacie was the curator at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque, IA as well as working early on for the Galena Historical Society. Time can easily disappear while hanging out in the front or back parlor, or upstairs in the front room. The bedrooms are comfortable and a great end to your day of doing whatever… or doing absolutely nothing. The property is still family-owned by Pete and Tacie’s two sons and their families. No matter what you end up doing (shopping, dining, antiquing, wine tasting, historic walking tours, river floats, winter skiing and more), The Asa Haile House is a great way to experience Galena and all of it’s historic charm.

The home is beautifully maintained, however as with antique furniture, it's just not very comfortable. Sleeping with the hubs in a very springy, full sized bed kept me awake, so I went to the living room to sleep in a recliner. The recliners didn't recline very far and the foot rest didn't come up very high, not comfortable. All of the sofa's are too short to sleep on, except one which was very narrow and not very comfortable. I got zero sleep the first night. The second night I slept on the floor.

The beautiful historic home was the perfect location to have a private space with friends. The front porch was great for drinking a beverage and socializing and the quick walk down to shopping and restaurants made it easy for individual excursions.

We had a great weekend in Galena. Robert’s property has the best views and is a great location. You are minutes from downtown Galena. Yes, there are steps. Our group ranged in age from 52 to 74, the 74 year old had hip replacement in July and was able manage the steps with no problems. We’d stay here again!

Beautiful historic home filled with charm. Views from the front porch were breath taking!! Very peaceful area, perfect for relaxation. Wonderful communication. Any questions or concerns were promptly addressed. The Campbells were pleasant. We were greeted by email before, during and after our stay. Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a peaceful retreat and has a love for history.

From the first time we booked many months ago, and throughout our stay, the host was very responsive to our inquiries. Overall, we were very happy with our experience. The view from the front of the house is INCREDIBLE! You can sit outside and watch the sunrise, listen to the birds, have coffee, etc. There is also a quaint little outside patio on the side of the house to move to if you get hot in the front of the house. There is a cute non-intrusive outdoor cat. Plenty of space! MANY rooms to choose from to gather. 3 nice sized bedrooms (one bed is high). Having three full bathrooms was great! We have a few things we'd suggest to improve the guest experience. Not all of the windows have coverings. People can't necessarily see inside, but if it is dark out, it would be nice to be able to close shades should you choose. There could be a few sensored plug-in night lights or lighted switches to light your path if you enter after dark to help you navigate unfamiliar surroundings. We could not get the TV to work, but I have no doubt that the host would have been very responsive if we had reached out. We appreciated the period-style home and furniture, but we would've liked one slightly more modern room in which to gather. Lastly, there is a learning curve and care needed to working the door locks and knobs. You need to push hard on some doors to get locks to engage. The home was great! We would stay again! We appreciated the parking. Host was awesome and so was the view!

We stayed here for my best friend's bachelorette weekend and had the best time! The house is huge and was more than enough space for the 4 of us. We loved all the little details and decorations. The location was so convenient: we didn't have to drive anywhere if we didn't want to. Those stairs on the way back up the hill, though... wear your walking shoes!

The Asa Haile House was a perfect setting for a friends reunion weekend. It's a gorgeous house. Watching the sun rise over Main Street and the foggy hills in the distance with coffee on the porch to wine on the lovely courtyard at night can't be beat. Highly recommend!

It is not Senior Citizen friendly. Lots of steps into the back of the house that are very precarious for people with joint issues. The stair banister was very loose. We had to buy our own toilet paper because there was none available. We enjoyed the history and ambience, but we did not feel safe. The doors into the house were very hard to lock if at all.
