View from Quality Hill overlooking historic district, quick walk to downtown
About this house rental
Situated in Galena, this lovely house for $280 per night is a fantastic option for your next trip. Built in 1856 by Asa Haile, a licensed riverboat captain and successful mason, this classic Federal-style brick home with Greek Revival accents is located up on Quality Hill, where mansions overlook the entire historic district of Galena. A quick 5-minute walk (maybe a bit longer on the way back up) puts you directly on Galena's Main Street, named “One of America’s best Main Streets” by Fodor’s. The front porch is the key to your stay at Asa Haile House. The view is fantastic, whether with a cup of coffee watching the town wake up or an evening sunset out towards Horseshoe Mound. Some evenings lightbeams can be seen over by Pilot Knob as a barge searches its way up the Mississippi River. No matter what the season; spring, summer, fall or winter, the porch is AWESOME! Inside the house is a culmination of love and dedication as Pete & Tacie Campbell took ownership of the property in the early 1970s. Their influence can be enjoyed throughout the 2,700-sqf house as both were historians; Pete ran the Illinois state historic sites in Galena and Tacie was the curator at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque, IA as well as working early on for the Galena Historical Society. Time can easily disappear while hanging out in the front or back parlor, or upstairs in the front room. The bedrooms are comfortable and a great end to your day of doing whatever… or doing absolutely nothing. The property is still family-owned by Pete and Tacie’s two sons and their families. No matter what you end up doing (shopping, dining, antiquing, wine tasting, historic walking tours, river floats, winter skiing and more), The Asa Haile House is a great way to experience Galena and all of it’s historic charm.

The home is beautifully maintained, however as with antique furniture, it's just not very comfortable. Sleeping with the hubs in a very springy, full sized bed kept me awake, so I went to the living room to sleep in a recliner.
The recliners didn't recline very far and the foot rest didn't come up very high, not comfortable. All of the sofa's are too short to sleep on, except one which was very narrow and not very comfortable. I got zero sleep the first night. The second night I slept on the floor.

The beautiful historic home was the perfect location to have a private space with friends. The front porch was great for drinking a beverage and socializing and the quick walk down to shopping and restaurants made it easy for individual excursions.

We had a great weekend in Galena. Robert’s property has the best views and is a great location. You are minutes from downtown Galena. Yes, there are steps. Our group ranged in age from 52 to 74, the 74 year old had hip replacement in July and was able manage the steps with no problems. We’d stay here again!

Beautiful historic home filled with charm. Views from the front porch were breath taking!! Very peaceful area, perfect for relaxation. Wonderful communication. Any questions or concerns were promptly addressed. The Campbells were pleasant. We were greeted by email before, during and after our stay. Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a peaceful retreat and has a love for history.

From the first time we booked many months ago, and throughout our stay, the host was very responsive to our inquiries.
Overall, we were very happy with our experience. The view from the front of the house is INCREDIBLE! You can sit outside and watch the sunrise, listen to the birds, have coffee, etc. There is also a quaint little outside patio on the side of the house to move to if you get hot in the front of the house. There is a cute non-intrusive outdoor cat.
Plenty of space! MANY rooms to choose from to gather. 3 nice sized bedrooms (one bed is high). Having three full bathrooms was great!
We have a few things we'd suggest to improve the guest experience. Not all of the windows have coverings. People can't necessarily see inside, but if it is dark out, it would be nice to be able to close shades should you choose. There could be a few sensored plug-in night lights or lighted switches to light your path if you enter after dark to help you navigate unfamiliar surroundings. We could not get the TV to work, but I have no doubt that the host would have been very responsive if we had reached out. We appreciated the period-style home and furniture, but we would've liked one slightly more modern room in which to gather. Lastly, there is a learning curve and care needed to working the door locks and knobs. You need to push hard on some doors to get locks to engage.
The home was great! We would stay again! We appreciated the parking. Host was awesome and so was the view!

We stayed here for my best friend's bachelorette weekend and had the best time! The house is huge and was more than enough space for the 4 of us. We loved all the little details and decorations. The location was so convenient: we didn't have to drive anywhere if we didn't want to. Those stairs on the way back up the hill, though... wear your walking shoes!

The Asa Haile House was a perfect setting for a friends reunion weekend. It's a gorgeous house. Watching the sun rise over Main Street and the foggy hills in the distance with coffee on the porch to wine on the lovely courtyard at night can't be beat. Highly recommend!

It is not Senior Citizen friendly. Lots of steps into the back of the house that are very precarious for people with joint issues. The stair banister was very loose. We had to buy our own toilet paper because there was none available.
We enjoyed the history and ambience, but we did not feel safe. The doors into the house were very hard to lock if at all.

This property was very unique and charming. There were a few things I wish I had known beforehand, like that the bedroom with twin beds was a set of bunk beds and that there was only one bathroom with a shower, but even so I don’t think these things would have deterred me from staying there. Can’t beat the location! The property owners were incredibly attentive and responsive, even checking in to be sure we had everything we needed mid-trip. It was a great choice for a long weekend!

Staying in the charming older house was a unique experience! The rich history and massive book collection added a wonderful touch. Its proximity to downtown Galena was a big plus, and the owners' responsiveness was appreciated. Although we wished for more cozy and comfortable seating, our busy schedule kept us on our feet. The front porch with its beautiful views was a highlight and provided a wonderful place to unwind and take in the surroundings.

What a great home full of such great history from books to things on the walls and the walls themselves. - something truly special and a true gem.

Great location - walking distance to everything on main st (although be mindful that it’s about 200 steps to climb when returning). Nice view. Clean house.

Our annual family girls trip was a blast! We enjoyed the close proximity to downtown and all the historical sites! The historic home was beautiful and a nice comfy home feel!

We enjoyed our girls trip. This was the perfect location for a walk down to shopping and drinks. This is a historic home with all the creaks and quirks that come with an old home. The downstairs shower had great water pressure and lots of hot water. The plumbing upstairs was iffy. The pillows were great. The couches were uncomfortable and some of the chairs needed to be redone. We did enjoy some of the great antiques in the house. Overall the house needed a good dusting.

This was a great location! Easy to walk to town (a few steps involved) and the home has multiple sitting rooms to enjoy! Beds were comfy.

Me and 5 other girl friends had a splendid stay at the Asa Haile House. The house itself is so charming and cozy and large! The property is magnificent and a prime spot for bird watching. We loved the location in proximity to the downtown area. We just had a glorious time during our stay. Both Rob and Michael are very friendly and nice and helpful. I highly reccomend staying at Asa Haile House. Thank you for having us.

It was very nice, neighbor is really friendly. It was really cool staying in such an old home just as it has been through generations. Super clean! The tubs are perfect for soaking!

This is a great property. Would love to stay here when the weather is warmer to enjoy the outdoor space.
Lots of steps to get downtown and back if walking. We ended up driving downtown and parking.
Would definitely stay here again.

Our family had a wonderful stay at the historic Asa Haile House. Mr. Campbell was responsive to my questions and offered great suggestions to ensure we had a good time. The beds were all comfortable, house was very clean, kitchen was well stocked for making home cooked meals and the house was a short walk to all the restaurants and shops. We enjoyed the massive collection of books and games for our family to enjoy. We would definitely stay again!

I spent a weekend here with some of my girlfriends. You absolutely cannot beat the location! It was so nice to be able to just park the car once we arrived, and walk everywhere. Robert was quick to respond to any of our needs. And the property was very clean. Overall, it was great!

We stayed at the Asa Haille House for a girls weekend. We were able to find everything we needed to make the meals we shared. The only thing we'd recommend would be more comfortable seating. We loved the historic furniture's aesthetic, but since we did a lot of sitting and visiting, more comfy cushions would have been enjoyed. We'd still return, though! Rob was so responsive when we had questions and quickly resolved a couple little glitches that came up.

Very vintage !! Large property, only one (small) shower but 3 total bathrooms. Smaller kitchen. Very nice views and outdoor spaces. Not really walkable - the hill is 10 flights of stairs. 3 siting/ living rooms. A few doors don’t latch/close or lock. Comfortable lodging.

The Asa Haile home is a beautiful, incredibly spacious historic home. The views from the front porch are wonderful, especially at sunrise. We loved meeting Merlin, the outdoor house cat, during morning coffee on the front porch. The Ulysses S. Grant home is even visible across the river from the front porch. You can feel the history as you walk throughout the home and gather in the various parlors. The private side patio was another great gathering place for morning coffee or an evening glass of wine. It was the perfect location for a relaxing weekend for our group of friends.
The proximity to Main Street is ideal for walks to/from town which avoids the parking hassle near Main Street.
Rob was very responsive and accommodating. He made sure that we had everything we needed for our Girls' Weekend.

This home is a wonderful representation of the history of Galena. We loved the feeling of being in the mid 1800s with the comforts needed in this century. The property owners were fantastic. They responded very quickly to our questions. If you plan to walk to downtown, be prepared for a steep climb back. We didn't mind. It gave us a chance to work off all of the good food that we consumed. The owners leave a really nice binder with information about the home and surrounding area. We loved watching the deer roam through the neighborhood. I truly cannot say enough good things about this experience.

Great place to stay when you have a larger group. It is perfectly located and can walk down town, just note it's quite a hill coming up. Place was unique and beautiful and would stay in a heart beat. Hosts were wonderful and even went above and beyond to look for something when I lost it the house but didn't realize it until after I left. Stay here! You will love it!

This house was perfect for us - me and my husband, plus our two adult children. Mornings on the porch overlooking the valley & downtown Galena. Evenings in the house, admiring the history on the walls, or just hanging out. Nights sleeping on comfortable beds. It is definitely a workout to come back to the house up the stairs, but there are also longer options that don't involve many stairs. I would stay again in a heartbeat.

The house was beautiful inside, beds were so comfortable and it was spotless!! We will definitely stay there again. We may have to drive to the shops since the stairs were brutal but the view from the patio made up for it!!

Historic House
We loved the place. Truly a rare ante bellum 19th Century house with great charm made really special by the collection of books and prints throughout that were clearly the result of years of collecting.
