Olive House is in a quiet suburb about 20 minutes drive from the airports, 17 from central Christchurch, to which there is also good public transport, and seven from a precinct of good restaurants.
Our accommodation was an unusual arrangement of two bedrooms, one of which we used for storage, separated by a large bathroom with shower and spa bath. Our firm mattress was comfortable; furnishings included large wardrobes and small bedside drawers but no table or chest. We also had access to the family lounge and a pleasant garden with seating area.
Free internet worked well.
We received a friendly reception. The house is decorated with attractive pictures by John and his accomplished artist wife Ping, and we like too their friendly little dog.
There was little continental about the ‘Continental breakfast’, set out to encourage morning conversation with host John. It comprised cereal, toast and jam, fruit yoghurt pots and probably tinned fruit salad, maybe augmented by kiwi or fruit from the garden.
In addition, our room had tea bags and sugar, but no milk, biscuits or coffee, although a cup of granules was provided on request. Nor are there any information leaflets, but John is knowledgeable about the area and happy to answer questions or give suggestions.
