Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica

Great excursions with many animal sightings (monkeys, caimans, sloths, macaws, spiders, scorpions, …) . The food was outstanding! Also the staff members were super friendly! You are in the rainforest so you will meet insects - sometimes closer than expected. That’s part of the experience though.

We stayed at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica for 3 nights in August 2026. The lodge itself is lovely, the accommodations were comfortable, and we saw some great wildlife. The second guide we had for Lake Sandoval was fantastic. Our assigned waitress in the restaurant was also wonderful!

At booking, it felt like daily activities would be tailor-made or flexible. In practice, upon arrival you are grouped with other parties (we were grouped with two other parties, for a total of 7 people) and assigned a single guide for your stay. You are largely expected to do whatever your group agrees on. The first day it seems that pretty much every group does Lake Sandoval in the morning, canopy tower in the afternoon, and 1-hour night walk. No flexibility, but this is a good first day. On our second full day, we wanted to do the paid "Ornithology" excursion to the macaw clay lick, which required four people. Though others in our group were interested, our guide discouraged it, citing a rain forecast (which had been inaccurate the day before, and it ended up not raining at all that day). Instead, he pushed a 5-hour round-trip boat ride for piranha fishing (also for an extra fee). As birders, we had zero interest in fishing. With no alternative presented within our group, we asked if another group was going to Lake Sandoval so we could tag along, meaning we ended up repeating the exact same trip as Day 1 just to have something to do. Communication was consistently poor. On our final morning, we wanted to do early morning birding at the canopy tower, a suggestion from a wonderful guide we met on our second Lake Sandoval trip. Reception said they would arrange it with our assigned guide, but we heard nothing back. We only found out the excursion was actually happening because another guest in our group mentioned the meetup time to us later that night. One of us is vegan and the other vegetarian, and the restaurant options were very disappointing for a resort of this caliber. The lunch menu never changed during our 3-night stay, forcing us to repeat meals. Dinner offered different daily menus, but the plant-based option frequently included an extremely dry chickpea burger. Vegan desserts were almost exclusively plain fruit chunks like apples or...
