The Needle Mountain Chalet Elevation 8,900 Feet 4 Bedroom/4.5 Bath Sleeps 12 4,000 Square Feet Master Bedroom - King Bedroom 2 - King Bedroom 3 - King Bedroom 4 - Queen 2 Full Sofa Sleepers 2 Twin Raised Airbeds Welcome to the Needle Mountain Chalet, located in one of Colorado's most beautiful valleys, just a short 5 minute drive (about 2.5 miles) from Purgatory/Durango Mountain Ski Resort. The Needle Mountain Chalet is situated on five acres covered with Aspen trees and Colorado Blue Spruce. With easy access to Highway 550, the Chalet is an all-season vacation home. Large and accommodating, the Chalet is approximately 4,000 square feet with four bedrooms and 4.5 baths sleeping 14. The views from the home from every window and either of the spacious decks are spectacular. The Needle Mountain Range, which rises to over 14,000 feet elevation, forms the eastern wall of the valley, and the finely chiseled Hermosa Cliffs rise in back of the Chalet on the west side. The Needle and West Needle ranges provide a veritable feast to the eyes. Towering 6,000 feet above the valley floor, they dominate the view from the master bedroom, main living room, loft living room, dining room, and front deck. Regardless of season or time of day, the vision is always changing and very dramatic at times. The back of the house faces the Hermosa Cliffs where the magnificent Castle Rock rises almost 2,000 feet above the Chalet. The majestic rise of the cliffs is breathtaking when viewed from the back patio, loft living room, upper level and main level bedrooms, and especially the deck adjoining the upper level bedroom. And the views are equally spectacular when hiking the 5-acre lot of aspen trees and spruce and the one mile loop around the neighborhood. The Chalet has a large living and dining area. The kitchen is one that a professional cook would love and feel at home with. The dining room easily seats 14 and there are dishes for 25. The pantry is stocked with many basics for guests use. There are two large ovens and an oven/warming drawer to keep meals hot. The decks have wonderful seating with patio heaters to keep you snug and warm. If you are coming in from a long day on the ski slopes slip outside and relax in the hot tub on our large deck. The hot tub is kept cleaned and heated for our guests. The view is of the Hermosa Cliffs - specifically Castle Peak. The garages accommodate a total of three vehicles and guests have the use of our garage door openers. There is also some covered parking for parties with more than three cars. In the winter you must have either have a four wheel drive or chains for your tires. We get a lot of snow at 8,900 feet. There is wireless internet access that is available throughout the house. The phone service includes unlimited long distance calling throughout the USA as well, so if this needs to be a working vacation, you will have all you need. The Durango winters can be cold on the mountain. The Chalet has heated floors and central heat that also has an air cleaner and humidifier. There is also a backup generator in case the power goes out – which can occasionally occur on the mountain. The generator automatically turns on if the power goes out to keep our guests warm and comfortable. There are two 60 gallon hot water heaters that are in tandem, so hot water is unlimited. The home is dog friendly, and we welcome your pets as a member of the family. A dog bed is provided in the laundry room along with a gate that can be used to secure your pet in the laundry room. There are also watering and food dishes for your pet. More than anything, you will enjoy and be awe struck with the fantastic views from every one of the many windows in the house and the immediate access to skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, golfing, and numerous other outdoor activities. A favorite activity is sitting on the decks admiring the beauty with the heaters on if it cold and then, of course, if you are coming in from a long day of skiing there is the long soak in the hot tub off the back deck. After a long but wonderful day on the ski slopes or the hiking trail or the golf course---or just sightseeing or riding the narrow gauge railroad or shopping in Durango--- get away from the crowds and congestion and enjoy the essence and solitude of the Rockies. The Chalet is truly Rocky Mountain High. So come and stay a spell. This home is dog friendly. Approved Dogs are allowed with a non-refundable fee per pet based on size/type. The location and house are awesome. We had a real nice time exploring Colorado. The house was plenty big enough, many more supplies than have ever encountered, and wonderful views. Only reason why I didn’t give it 5 stars is because we pay a cleaning fee however, the house was dusty, and lots of pet hair. We had to move a couch and hair was under it as well as a paper from June. Lots of hair under the tv table in family room. Besides that it was a definite nice house and I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again.

We had an amazing stay over spring break! Great location with a 3 minute drive to the base of the mountain. The road to the house was nice and manicured to get to the house, but if there was a snow storm or during the winter you would definitely need snow chains or tires. The road is uphill.
The house was very clean and had enough space. We loved the large dining table and the kitchen was stocked with everything you could ever need! The front porch and back porch were great hang out spaces with heaters after a long day.

This is one of the most beautiful vacations homes that we have ever stayed in. The location was excellent in close proximity to Purgatory ski resort and just a short drive to Durango. The home is fully equipped with everything you could possibly need from an abundance of kitchen appliances, utensils, pots and pans and so much more. The beds are a bit firm, but comfortable and the pillows were a bit soft for our taste but that’s truly the only negative we could find. It was a wonderful place to stay and the outdoor amenities were superb. I would highly recommend this home for your next stay. Absolutely Stunning.

Our kids loved that they each had a room to themselves and there is plenty of space to enjoy together or break away for some quiet time. The location of the home is great. We were only a 5-6 drive to Purgatory Resort for skiing, which made for a very easy drive back to the house after full days at the resort to cook dinner and relax. Needle Mountain Chalet will definitely be our choice to stay any time we visit Durango in the future!

This home is spacious, open, well-appointed, and very conveniently located. It only takes a few moments to get to Purgatory each morning and the drive to Durango is also easy and convenient. The home was very well stocked with essentials and staple items. We actually brought along way too many extras that weren't needed. The large dining room and open kitchen are perfect for gatherings and lovely evenings as a group. The open areas outdoors were also perfect for the kids to enjoy some sledding. The only caution I have is for drivers. Everyone in our party drives 4wd trucks. If there is any snow do not attempt the driveway without chains in addition to 4wd. The signs on the property all indicate you need 4wd or snow chains, but we had several scary incidents when traveling up the drive with the only 4wd. The snow gets very deep, packed, and slippery. A man at the property to shovel off the decks told us that people always have trouble with the driveway during storms and often slip off the road. He said this house in particular has trouble because of the steep drive. That would not keep me away from this wonderful property and if we were ever in the area again we would absolutely stay here! Just be cautious and chain up, even with 4wd. Don't hesitate to book this amazing home for your next trip. Peaceful, beautiful, and just perfect!

Spacious and Beautiful
My fiance and I recently stayed at Needle Mountain Chalet with a few friends and let me start by saying, you will not be let down! The home was very spacious, clean, and well decorated. The kitchen was large, and stocked with every cookware item imaginable. The towels were plentiful. The master bathroom was large and luxurious. Every detail was thought of in this home. There are incredible views in every room that just take your breath away. We will definitely be back!

Worth every penny!!!
We stayed a Needle Mountain Chalet from December 23-31. There was 9 of us total (two families) and plenty of room for everyone. Last year we rented a house down the highway. It slept all of us, but there was not enough space for the kids to hang out, watch tv, etc without it feeling like we were on top of each other. The kids had the upstairs. The loft is a great place for them to hang out and watch tv. They slept on the fold out couch and we used the E-Z beds (2) for two more kids in the loft. Our oldest was in the queen bedroom upstairs by himself. The living area, kitchen and dining room are very large and plenty of sitting for everyone. This place is stocked! We never ran out of towels or dishes. They have every cooking appliance you need-- plus some that you always wanted to try and wouldn't buy for yourself. I felt spoiled the entire trip. Did I mention....heated floors.
Sue Holland was so easy to work with. She helped us plan our trip, told us where to rent ski equipment for a discount, and her binder at the house gave a ton of information about local restaurants etc.
The house was decorated for Christmas inside and out. Sue and Gwen (property manager) definitely made our trip special. Our whole crew would recommend staying at this home. You will NOT be disappointed!

I would agree with another review... The pictures don't do the house justice at all! We were very impressed and enjoyed our stay. I've lived in Colorado my whole life and the views off the front deck are spectacular. The flow of the house is awesome and the back deck and hot tub were tucked away nice in the back. Very nice property and the small details were handled very well. Location relative to the ski area was perfect, I don't think the heater even had time to warm up the drive was so short!! Great attention to detail in the house including the furniture, decorations and layout. You won't be disappointed!

Exceeded All Expectations!!!!
This home was amazing, the photos available do not show how large and beautiful the house is. The home has an open floor plan with gorgeous views. When we arrived we were greeted by the housekeeper who provided some goodies (Snacks, emergency, Advil, etc.) The homeowner also keeps the home stocked with plenty of sheets, blankets, and towels. All of which came in handy when traveling with a group of 10 people. We were all so impressed and pleased with the home it has become a favorite property of all the homes we have rented on VRBO! Cannot wait to go back!

Views are BEAUTIFUL
Rented this home based on the views for our vow renewal. Ceremony was on the back porch w/the aspen grove in background. Wonderful for entertaining and slept 10 very comfortably. Great for photography too. Fun sledding and all the amenities were wonderful. Pantry was well stocked. Owner is very friendly and had good tips. 2 miles from ski resort.

Unbelievable Find!
My family rented Needle Mountain Chalet for 5 days at Thanksgiving 2013. This is one of the nicest properties we have ever rented. The owner is very organized and provided very informative information prior to arrival. The property was huge, spotless and had every modern convenience you would want. We absolutely loved the large comfortable bedrooms with nice bathrooms; we used the fireplaces every night! The property has amazing amenities, including things like spices, Kleenex, shampoo, conditioner, cotton balls, etc. There was even different types of bath crystals for the HUGE master bath tub. I would definitely stay again!

Post New Year Hibernation/Relaxation
We chose to vacation a week after the New Year in Durango, CO for some Rest and Relaxation in a comfortable setting during snowy bliss. We got lucky and found availability in an exceptional winter home in Hermosa Cliffs. The Holland home was definitely more than what we could have asked for, no exagerration. While there are winter activities to take advantage of here, the Holland home makes it difficult to want to leave it for a minute. Beautiful snow capped mountain and aspen tree views from every room to go along with everything you could need or want during your stay; the amenities listed are spot on. We took advantage of a great kitchen to cook, eat, drink and be merry, and cozy up to the fireplaces each day. The only thing left for us to say is "Gracias" and can't wait to be back again.

This is the best vrbo house we have ever stayed in, and we have stayed in many.
It has fabulous furnishings, comfortable beds, gorgeous and huge kitchen open to the living area. Everything was done in exquisite taste. There is plenty of room and places to go for private time.
The house is perfectly maintained. The decks are huge and in great condition.
And it happens to have the best views of any place we have ever stayed. We loved watching the sunset from the front porch, then dipping into the hot tub as the stars came out.
It is out near the ski area, 20 minutes from town, but there is a great pizza place and a well stocked convenience store just a minute away, and a full-fledged grocery store only 10 minutes away.
The owners are wonderful people and very accomodating. The property manager is a doll.
There are not sufficient words to describe what a paradise this house is to stay in. If you get the opportunity to stay at Needle Mt. Chalet, consider yourself very lucky.

Wonderful Time with Family
wanted to take a moment to thank you for our wonderful stay at your home in December. Our family thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful accommodations. So many welcoming touches: the chocolates on the pillows, the recently remodeled master bath (nice), the awesome kitchen items, wonderful fireplaces and real wood (we used it!), playing games on the coffee table in front of the fireplace, etc. The kids said the Belgian waffles that I made for them (using the high altitude cookbook in the cupboard) were the best they ever had! The hot-tub out in 15 degree nights was a new experience too.

Wonderful Summer Family Vacation
We stayed at Needle Mountain Chalet in early August with our daughter/son-in-law and grandchildren. The house was absolutely perfect for our group of 7. It was beautiful and fully appointed with everything a visiting family could need. The kitchen is well equipped for feeding a large group or extended family. We spent the days in Durango, Purgatory, Mesa Verde and on the train. In the evenings we would return to the beaufiful Chalet where we could have a family meal in the large dining room and then relax outside watching the night sky or sitting around the fire pit. We will be recommending this wonderful home to our friends and family. You could not want for nicer accommodations in the Durango area.

A Fabulous Getaway!
We stayed at the Chalet in late January for a long weekend getaway. I must admit, the Durango area had more snow than I’d seen in years, but it was beautiful. We were worried we’d have trouble getting to the Chalet, but the road was well plowed and it was easy to find.
The pictures that are posted do not do the home justice. The views are awesome! There is nothing quite like watching the snow fall outside on a dark night while sitting by a warm fire with a hot drink - well, except for witnessing an amazing sunrise on the porch. It was all breathtaking and made us want to extend our stay.
We also enjoyed the proximity to downtown Durango’s shopping and dining. Of course, the ski slopes are very close, but we wanted to enjoy the fun of downtown and then return to the seclusion of the Chalet for the evening.
We certainly hope to return next year and perhaps bring some friends along to share in the beauty of the Chalet and the mountains. Thank you Sue & Royce for sharing your wonderful home.

AMAZING VACATION!!!
This is the perfect home away from home!!! We enjoyed 5 nights of absolute luxury and spectacular views. The beautiful snow fall on the first night, was enchanting as we sat by the fireplace(s). The kids made wonderful new sled runs down the front over the next several days. It was so nice to be just a couple minutes from the lifts at Purgatory! Ski, ski, ski.....relax!!!!!! The kitchen and dining area are a dream! We would wake up in the morning to magnificent views and wind down at night to the most magnificent stars I have seen in YEARS!!! Loved the heaters on the porch!! I can't wait to come back in the summer to see what else is under all the snow! The activities in the area were awesome. We had a wonderful, 3 generation family vacation in July, 2009, at Needle Mountain Chalet. Every day was full of adventures for the younger folks, while our mother enjoyed relaxing on the front porch and experiencing the beauty and serenity of the surrounding mountains, lakes and wildlife. This home has the feel of a luxurious resort with gorgeous views from every window. All the comforts of home, and a wonderful kitchen & dining room perfect for family dinners. Beautiful hummingbirds feeding right in front of the windows. Mother and fawn muledeer nibbling in the yard. Many things are not to be missed while you're there. Ride the old Durango-Silverton Railroad train that follows the breath-taking Animas River up thru the mountains. Visit Ouray, a quaint little town called "Little Switzerland", set high in the San Juan Mountains. Explore Mesa Verde 's thousand year old cliff dwellings. Hike the trail behind the house to the top of the Hermosa Cliffs. Enjoy a "campfire" in the backyard fire pit and make s'mores. It was great - wish we'd had more time. Can only imagine how beautiful this place is in the fall and winter. Will definitely return!

Just wanted to thank you for sharing your beautiful home. It was everything we hoped for and much more. The views were as spectacular as we have ever seen. Being there sure makes it hard to come home. We treated it as home and took care of it as if it were. We tried to leave everthing as it was when we arrived. Also, please give a special thanks to Grover for staying on top of the roads and helping us out when we needed him. Gwen and Julie were very helpful and made our stay even more enjoyable. We did leave a sled that we purchased from town with hopes that others staying at the Chalet could use it and we were pretty loaded down as it was. The trip was great and we hope to return soon.
