Casa Contessa is the ultimate Croatian countryside retreat. Ideally situated in the small village of Livade, just outside the iconic hilltop town of Motovun, it offers the perfect base for exploring one of the most beautiful parts of Istria. The property feels wonderfully secluded, tucked away in a tiny settlement of just a handful of beautifully renovated holiday homes. You have the sense of being deep in the countryside, surrounded by complete peace and quiet. And then there is the view: the sight of Motovun rising above the landscape from the garden is, quite honestly, worth the stay in itself. Yet the experience only gets better once you step inside. Our hosts, Bruna, Franco and their son Antonio, have thought of absolutely everything you could possibly need. The attention to detail is extraordinary: hair straighteners, candles and toothpicks sit alongside their award-winning olive oil, fresh grapes and homemade grappa. From the moment they greet you at the door with a huge smile and a warm handshake, they embody the very best of Istrian hospitality. More than anything else, it is their generosity and warmth that make Casa Contessa feel so special. Inside the property, there is genuinely nothing we could think of that might be improved. It feels closer to a five-star hotel experience than a holiday rental. The furnishings are immaculate, modern and beautifully maintained; everything is spotlessly clean, fresh and thoughtfully arranged. The bed is quite possibly the most comfortable I have ever slept in. The bath even has a whirlpool function, making for a wonderfully indulgent evening ritual after a day exploring Istria — preferably after one final look across to Motovun as the sun goes down. With Istria’s beautiful weather, you naturally want to spend as much time outdoors as possible, and Casa Contessa makes that easy.
