Terlingua Casita de Chiles Barndominium
About this condo rental
Nestled in Big Bend National Park, this attractive condo for $179 per night is a fantastic choice for your next vacation. A beautiful property, with established "Premier Hosts" - pictures have been updated! Enjoy a 2 bedroom, 2 bath barndominium apartment on 107 acres of pristine Chihuahuan Desert wilderness, nestled in a valley between awe-inspiring mountains. Witness the most amazing sunrises, sunsets and star shows anywhere! See the Milky Way in all it's glory in our "dark skies" territory and from the brand new 6-person hot tub ("hot" in the winter - a "cooling pool" in the summer - you adjust the temperature to meet your preferences). This location (45 min from BBNP) allows the enjoyment of a huge assortment of wildlife viewing - migratory birds of all colors, shapes and forms, dove, quail, ravens, red-tail hawks, mule deer, javelina, rabbits, fox, wolves, and even an occasional black bear, bobcat or mountain lion. In addition to the wildlife, visitors have enjoyed marveling at the wide and diverse array of plant and cactus life! Another bonus is that this location provides miles of primitive walking/hiking/biking/ATV opportunities. Be sure and inquire about special excursions offered by the hosts. If visitors choose to fly-in, to the nearby landing strip, the hosts will gladly assist with transportation (please inquire ahead-of-time). The apartment is rustically furnished with brand new custom ordered furnishings, including queen-size beds/mattresses. Also, found in the apartment is a TV in each bedroom and living room (with Dish Network), on-site Fiber Optic 5G WIFI, outside lounging furniture on a viewing deck as well as on the ground floor patio. A full-size stove/oven, refrigerator, counter-top ice maker, microwave, filtered drinking water, coffee pot, dishes, pots & pans, linens, towels and an outdoor gas grill are all provided. Tabletop heater and a fire pit are also available to ensure the enjoyment of the outdoors, even on cooler evenings. The apartment comes equipped with a sophisticated mini-split heating and air conditioning system. The apartment, currently, sleeps 4 but can sleep 6 with the use of 2 new, large, heavy-duty cots with thick cot mattresses, upon request. In addition, if additional space is needed for additional guests, the hosts' original property is also available near by - an RV that can accommodate 4 more guests (please inquire). The hosts live near, but a bit removed, on the acreage, and are readily available for information/advice and/or socialization (previous guests have remarked how much they enjoyed "happy hour" on the porch with the hosts!) and if any need arises. The hosts continue to take great pains to insure that our facilities meet and exceed recommended sanitation guidelines. Please be aware that this is a non-smoking property (due to allergies - both inside and outside) and that no pets are allowed (for your pet's safety). There is a $250 fine for the violation of either of these policies. Absolutely no hunting or discharge of firearms allowed. Area attractions include but are not limited to: Big Bend National Park (be sure and see the Chisos Basin, the Boquillas Overlook, the Hot Springs, the Dinosaur Exhibit, Santa Elena Canyon and river tours among others), Big Band Ranch State Park (be sure and enjoy the Hoo Doo's and Closed Canyon Trails), the Terlingua Ghost Town (enjoy dinner at the famous Starlight Theatre restaurant), the Lajitas Golf Resort (enjoy a prickly pear margarita at the Thirsty Goat Saloon), the "River Road" following alongside the Rio Grande River (Highway 170 - considered one of the top 10 scenic drives in America) and the casual and quaint, local Bad Rabbit cafe' located just 1 mile away. Also, and closer to home you'll find the Terlingua Ranch Headquarters office (they sell ice and trinkets), the crystal clear, cool and refreshing swimming pool and bath house. Note that the hosts value and support military personnel, veterans and first responders by offering a 10% discount on the nightly rate. This discount is offered only when the qualifying person is present (please notify hosts, at time of booking, and be prepared to present ID card). A 10% discount is also provided to returning guests (please remind hosts, at time of booking, that you've been with us before). We came down to view the dark skies and hike in Big Bend National Park.
The Barndominium was perfect. Plenty of space for all of us, extremely well stocked kitchen and bathrooms. We didn’t have a need for anything. Thank you for having good pots, pans, plastic containers, and ziplock bags.
It was a very clean place and we had a nice welcome from the hosts. There was a small snafu with the hot tub, but the hosts worked hard to get the issue taken care as quickly as possible. We thoroughly enjoyed sitting in the hot tub after our hikes and early in the morning. Stargazing from the hot tub was great.
I would definitely recommend this place! Thank you to our hosts!

Had a great time and enjoyed our stay. Remote location but beautiful countryside.

Property is a bit out of the way, but so worth it. Friendly hosts, squeaky clean house with all the amenities. Kitchen well stocked, nice sheets, towels, etc. And outside? Lovely deck and patio, nice furnishings, and incredible view. Wildlife right below the deck in the evenings. Hosts obviously take pride in their property. And, no long list of chores before leaving.

The property is absolutely amazing. Surrounded by mountains. It is 15 miles off the main road which we did not mind. The owners were very hospitable and we enjoyed visiting with them. If you are looking to get off the beaten path this is your place. We loved every minute.

Mark and Michelle are very friendly and accommodating hosts. We were witnesses to the daily routines of various wildlife and entertaining ravens, beautiful skies and starry nights! Nice property just a bit more remote from TX-118 than we expected for going out and about.

Traveled to Big Bend with the family and stayed at Mark and Michelle's place for 3 nights. The barndo was clean and stocked with all the comforts of home (minus) drinkable water. The country is pretty remote and having to trailer water is a common practice. However, we did not have a shortage. The wildlife on the property was a joy to see each day and night.

Michelle and Mark were great hosts. The barndominium is best for stargazing and viewing the milky way, we really enjoyed our stay. The property has a well stocked kitchen and lots of games for kids.
The last 4 miles to the property are unpaved - cars with very low ground clearance not advised.

This place is phenomenal. Beautiful dark skies at night and great sun rises and sunsets. Mark is a wonderful host and was very informative. We plan on another trip to Casita de Chiles again!! Thanks!

The place was very comfortable to stay at. Our hosts gave us a tour of the place to let us know where things were located. The kitchen is well stocked with cookware and utensils. There's plenty of outdoor seating as well and at night you're able to see all of the stars. It is about an hour from Big Bend, so it's not too far. One thing to note is that the last 2 miles from the property is on gravel road so bring an appropriate vehicle and not a sedan :). I will definitely stay here again in a future visit to Big Bend.

This 2 bed room, 2 bathroom with spacious kitchen & living room cabin is a perfect getaway from city life. I timed it with a new moon to be able to soak in the dark starry night & it is a little over an hour away from the observatory. Mark & Michelle are perfect hosts, communiciative and just wonderful people to share these views with others. Mark feeds the animals so it truly feels like a disney movie at times with deer, foxes and every kind of bird. As always, a beautiful stay and I hope to return.

This stay was everything we needed and more! The kitchen was fully stocked with every essential covered, making cooking for our family very easy! The simple touches around the house made it feel like home and my family very much enjoyed ourselves. The property is breathtaking and Mark even feeds the deer each evening. The first night we saw 14 deer on the property.
Mark was very communicative with us throughout our stay and was also helpful with Tire Shop recommendations when we ended up with a flat tire inside Big Bend Park - fun times!
We highly recommend staying here!

Mark and Michelle were great hosts for us. Mark met us on arrival and explained everything and was super helpful. The property is about 15 miles off the main highway (roughly a 30 minute drive based on roads), but that is just how things are out west. It was a little over an hour to the visitor's center at Big Bend. The barndominium was an excellent place for our family and the mountain views were great. Appreciate all the amenities including the great kitchen tools. Also appreciate the fact they offer a break for military folks. Highly recommended!

What an amazing place to enjoy the solitude of nature. Mountains and desert landscape is so amazing and all the wildlife is a joy. The hosts are phenomenally nice people and have taken well care of everything!

Michelle and Mark were amazing from beginning to end. Amazing property in the private mountains of Terlingua. Saw tons of wildlife as promised! VRBO had everything we needed plus more! The electricity went out due to a storm and they had back up generators. Truly friendly people who wanted our family to have a great vacation!

We stayed this past weekend. Mark and Michelle are absolutely wonderful! Very helpful and friendly 💕. The Barndo is very clean and comfy. The covered porch up top was perfect for a night cap and morning coffee.
We were a little shocked at how long it took to get to the house. Road is 15 miles and last 3 miles are pretty rough (washboard road). Total travel time to Terlingua is 40 minutes. 😩
The Bad Rabbit Cafe has a wonderful breakfast and the staff are friendly. Oh and Long Draw Pizza in Terlingua was ssooo good! Thank you Mark and Michelle for the recommendation!👍
Thank you Mark and Michelle for the hospitality . Maybe next time we will find time for an adult beverage on the porch!

Absolutely the best place we’ve stayed. So peaceful and quiet. Enjoyed the wildlife also.

Mark and Michelle are very nice people and walked us through the property themselves. Told us how to operate the hot tub, AC, etc. Unit itself was very well stocked, we were pleasantly surprised! Mark was kind enough to assist us with a beautiful location for my brother to propose to his girlfriend while we were there. It worked out perfectly! We were in with our infant son, and my brother, his fiancée and her 3 year old. We easily made the property work for all of us. Would recommend to anyone, and we will be back!!

What an amazing stay. Great wilderness. Amazing place for the two of us. So much space. If our 2 adult children had come, there would have been plenty of space. Took advantage of second floor deck to eat home made breakfast and dinners. Spent a couple nights in hot tub looking up at sky. A ways (40 min or so to entrance) to Big Bend NP but the wilderness we stayed at in this barndominium was well worth it. Saw some mule deer, javelina, and multiple birds nesting right around us. Gray fox was elusive but seems to have visited during night. Wonderful host. Thank you

Michelle and Mark were wonderful hosts going out of their way to make sure our stay was enjoyable. Mark took special care to give really good directions to the location. Michelle was on the property since we were behind their house. She was very helpful and fun to talk to!

Our second stay here so that says a lot. We have a hard time adding anything that has not been said on the positive side already over and over! On the negative, there are none that can be thought of. The attention to detail, very nice hosts, peaceful location and amenities are in the top 5% in our many and varied VRBO rental experiences. The Barndo is about 25 minutes from the main road but out in Big Bend country that is nothing unusual. The thing about the Big Bend area is that everything takes some time to get to but its such a cool area you don't seem to notice. Try not to arrive during the day and your check-in experience will be stress free. It is not hard to find in the day (GPS gets you there and then the Barndo pops right out of the desert) but maybe trickier at night - like others mentioned. I think one would be hard pressed to find another place to stay that is this nice in the general Big Bend area. Just don't book it when we want to come again....

Mark and Michelle have set up an amazing home away from home. The location is incredible, the home is exactly what our family of 6 needed to be comfortable, and we loved our trip up to Christmas Mountain. It was hard to leave!
5.0
Mark and Michelle were very welcoming. Property is very clean with more amenities than you could ever need. Lots of wildlife watching and great location for the viewing the night sky. Close to the Bad Rabbit for a quick bite or a reasonable drive to Terlingua for gas and food. Highly recommend staying here if you are interesting in visiting BBNP with comfortable accommodations.

Great location for our visit to Big Bend. Just a heads up for families with kids -- the park itself is very large. If you're on the far east end of the park, it's around 1.5 hr drive through the park and to the property. But, once there, it's fantastic. We had 4 kids and the cots worked out great.
We saw many animals in the evenings (deer, grey fox, javelinas) while we hung out in the hot tub and roasted smores.
Great communication with Mark.

Property was better then we expected. Very clean. Convenient location. Everything we needed and then some. Beds were very comfortable. Owners were super nice and helpful. We saw a ton of wildlife as well.
5 stars all around!

I would love to tell you just how great the barndominimum is ……but I would like it to be available next time we try to book it. 😉
Mark and Michele are fantastic hosts and the barndo has absolutely everything you could need to live there - minus the food.
There was nothing that we needed that wasn’t available!!
We enjoyed the evening “happy hour” with drinks and queso and their knowledge of the area is extensive. Need to know where to eat, just ask. Not sure what you want to do, just ask. They also offer some excursions on their personal property that could be a great way to spend the day. We didn’t use that option …. this trip. But we will be back and will consider those options when making our plans.
The deck is a great place to sit and enjoy the wildlife in the evening (and early mornings) while we enjoyed a snack or something to drink.
Thank you Mark and Michele for sharing your piece of desert paradise with us.

Fantastic place to stay! Owners are wonderful, made sure we had everything we needed, and helped us get our daughter's jacket for her stuffed animal back to us. We saw a variety of wildlife and loved the quiet, starry nights!

little tight for us all. It was an adventure to
find the location!! Once we were all there we enjoyed our stay!! Thanks Mark and Michelle!!

The location and accommodations were superb! Hosts welcomed us and made themselves available to answer any questions. Every evening we sat around a fire and watched wildlife eat. Many deer, javelina, and foxes to watch! Stargazing from the hot tub was amazing as well! We definitely will stay here again!

If you are staying in the Wild West of TX, Mark + Michelle are the bests hosts one could ask for. They have thought of everything for a stay at the Barndo. You are greeted by Mark himself, and you’ll walk into a fully stocked house - water bottles, towels for the hot tub, coffee for morning, tons of cozy blankets and pillows, extra feed for the fox + havalinas, etc.
Mark + Michelle are absolute pilars of their community. From leading bible studies to participating in fundraisers, organizing emergency medical responders classes + so much more - these two are absolutely Teralingua’s finest.
Mark + Michelle are the best guides you can get for Big Bend, the nearby town and even for hopping over to Mexico. They’ll let you know the best hikes in the Park, what time to get to Starlight Theater (and even which waitress is best!), the drink to order when you cross over to Boquillas + so much more. Spending time with Mark, Michelle (+ their adorable dog Chula) was an absolute treasure. Our mornings enjoying coffee w/ them on the porch was the highlight of our stay. The barndo is an oasis of West Texas - we can’t recommend it highly enough. The star gazing will blow your mind, especially when you watch from the hot tub. We were so well taken care of there, and the barndo itself is everything you could ever need and more.
As a clan of city slickers in our mid-twenties, we can vouch for Mark and Michelle’s coolness factor. We only hope we can come back and do it all again.

Great host and super clean property on a lot of land. Very scenic in the mountains. Pictures online are accurate. Takes about 30 minutes to Terlingua and accessible to Big Bend as advertised.

Mark and Michelle have created a welcoming home for guests in the desert who want to experience the mountains and desert and still enjoy the comforts of home. Their clean house has everything you would need for extended stays or to entertain, but you probably won’t want to break the peacefulness with too much chatter:-). Outdoor furniture and warming devices are plentiful ( fire pit, fire table, heater, hot tub) for chilly evenings under the magical west Texas skies. Deer, javalina, and foxes were right next to the house during our visit. Instructions to the house and for use of the house were super helpful. We highly recommend a visit!

My husband and I celebrated our delayed honeymoon in BBNP and I don’t know if we could have picked a better place to stay! So many things I want to mention in our review, there just isn’t enough space!! We were greeted by our amazing hosts and pulled up to the property with about 20 deer greeting us. There wasn’t a single detail left out at this VRBO including a back up generator!! And yes we needed it thanks to the freak ice storm. We very much enjoyed having dinner with Mark and Michelle. You honestly will not find kinder or more down to earth people than they are. True southern hospitality.
We got so many great pictures just from their property alone!! Thanks Mark and Michelle for sharing your slice of Texas heaven with us and you will be seeing the Robo’s reservation the next time we visit Big Bend.
Ps- there is a cafe super close with great food and service if you want a break from cooking.

This place was really one of a kind. The hosts have put a lot of thought and creativity into making this place cozy, comfortable, and fun while being surrounded by beautiful mountains and desert landscapes. The sunsets and sunrises are breathtaking. Getting into Big Bend itself only took 40 minutes from the front door to the park entrance, and it is a beautiful, scenic drive. We loved the different heating options on the covered deck so we could sit outside longer in the fresh air, even with winter temperatures. There aren't many places you'll find a hot tub in Big Bend, and it is a welcome therapy after a long day of hiking! We would love to return here in the future.

We had so much fun here, the hot tub was constantly warm for us and the views were incredible! The owners are very kind and always willing to help, their communication was amazing!

The house was clean and well stocked. Mark and Michelle couldn’t have been nicer and more helpful, but not intrusive at all.
Had a 4wd Jeep and love the private drive to the top of Christmas mountain Mark suggested and Marathon Road between the Persimon visitor center and their place. Their bit if insight on the state of the roads, problems that could occur, how to drive thru the sandy spots, and to call them if something happen was gratefully received.
