This was one of our favourite stays in all of Japan. The property is a beautifully restored historical building, which gives the whole experience a very authentic feel. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The beds were ultra comfortable. It even had my favourite of all Japanese toilets - when you stagger to the bathroon in the middle of the night the toilet lid automatically opens and the bowl is illuminated with a soft uv light - super useful and very gentle on the eyes. A short walk away is ome of the best espresso style coffee we found anywhere. And there are heaps of excellent food options nearby - from street food to high end. We were extremely lucky to score a last-minute reservation at the downstairs restaurant where we were told is usually booked out months in advance - a magnificently unique experience delivered by a michelin chef. We spent five nights here as a central point to also do some day trips around Kyushu. Some of the coastal and mountain scenery was a great contrast to the city sights.
The only very minor thing for me is I always like to have a bar where I can grab a late night cocktail. This is not that kind of place, but we knew this going in. You can get a sake here at certain staffed times. One other thing to be aware of is there is no on-site parking (again, we were warned in advance). The whole area is serviced by a series of small (4-16 car) paid carparks. The pricing is okay (around 1,000 yen per day) but at times during the middle of the day it can be difficult to find a space, and you may need to do a bit of driving around to find one (and potentially a little bit of a walk back to your room). But sometimes on the walk you discover something you didn't know was there, and we never had any excessive walk from any of the carparks we used.
