Romantic Retreat Volcano View! Waterfall Trail!
About this house rental
Located in Alajuela Province, this attractive house for $233 per night is a great option for your next break. A roofed terrace wraps this contemporary home with amazing views of Arenal Lake, Arenal Volcano, jungles & on-site tropical gardens. 2 bedroom, one with a King Size bed and the other with a Queen Size bed, 3 full baths, full kitchen, living & dining room. Rural and close to zip lines, hiking trails, private waterfall, horseback riding, good restaurants, butterfly conservancy, art gallery and more. When we bought this house, we described the view as “The most beautiful view I had ever seen.” The Arenal Volcano dominated the landscape. And in the same view, there was Arenal Lake, the largest inland lake in Costa Rica. Running alongside of our property, just out of sight, but not out of sound, is a river, singing it's song 24/7. This is a beautiful contemporary home, with what you would expect in an American built home...On demand hot water in every room, American plumbing where you can actually flush the toilet paper, screens on the windows and fans on the ceilings. The bedroom is air conditioned, although in the many years we have been here we have never needed it. Fresh air is welcomed into the house so inside or out you can take advantage of the amazing Costa Rica weather. Come along on a verbal tour. After you park your car in the carport, you will walk through the first of 7 hand carved doors (all designed from photos the previous owner has taken.) You will be astounded by the view provided by the floor to ceiling glass walls that let you be a part of nature. Your dining room table is hand made locally from a tree trunk slab as the top and a root section as the base. The kitchen features a gas stove with 2 ovens, a large refrigerator/freezer, a walk-in pantry, coffee maker, rice maker, blender, mixer, toaster and most every other gadget you will need to cook absolutely fabulous meals. Your flat screen TV (with a satellite connection and some English programming) can be watched from the leather couch or from two comfortable chairs with ottomans. The chairs swivel 180 degrees to let you look outside through the floor to ceiling tinted windows while reading or relaxing. Your terrace wraps around the house giving you perfect views of Arenal Volcano, Lake Arenal, Arenal National Park and the Children's Eternal Rainforest. A stairway leads to a private tropical garden with walking paths for you to enjoy the plantings and fauna. There you will find banana trees, wonderful eatable red hibiscus you can pick for your salads or tea, many flowering tropical plants, hummingbirds, flycatchers as well as tanagers, often the toucans visit...a wonderful place to linger. The Master bedroom with a large en-suite bathroom is located in the first floor has a comfortable King Size bed from where you can enjoy magnificent views of the Arenal Volcano and the surrounding rain forest. The bedroom has direct access to the wrap around terrace, a perfect place for sunrise and sunset, as well as a cup of coffee,or tea, or a glass of wine, and also a small private walk out balcony. Wake to the sunrise lighting the volcano with amazing colors. Watch the clouds rise from the forest floor (we are at the 2400 foot elevation dividing line between the rainforest and cloud forest). Heading upstairs you will find the guests bedroom, you will find a Queen size bed. Your bedroom has a walk out covered terrace, Your view from the upstairs terrace takes in the jungle, lake and volcano. Both baths have wonderful walk-in showers that blesses your body with spring water, heated by an on-demand water heater. There is a walk-in closet for your use as well. Without even starting your car, you will be able to walk to our private waterfall, (we even have boots you can wear) go horseback riding right up the hill at Parrot Hill and/or walk to supper at a wonderful restaurant , Nepenthe Phoenix, hike and watch the wildlife. We are regularly visited by three kinds of toucans, howler monkeys as well as the spider monkeys, and have our "white hawks" circling. Many birds and insects can be found if you take the time to look. Otherwise a snuggle on the terrace, catch a quiet moment of serenity, or catch up on that book you have wanted to read. The air is fresh and clean, the water is tasty, and the setting is amazing. It is unlikely we will be nearby while you are here, but you can reach us anytime by email if there are problems or something is not to your satisfaction. You can make reservations for any activities you want to participate in...Zip lining, hanging bridges, rafting, kayaking, hiking, eating, hot springs and much more. You will find a red binder in the house when you arrive. Inside you will find everything you need, telephone numbers, locations, names, information on how the house works, lists of our favorite places to eat, play and visit. You can spend a lot of time in this area and still have more to see and do. We strongly recommend NOT making a lot of arrangements for activities or specific plans until you arrive, EXCEPT for reservations for Zip Lining and Rafting. Both of these are often sold out. When you get here, look in the red binder with tons of information on the house, the TV's, the trail to the waterfall, specific restaurants we love both here in El Castillo and La Fortuna. We will share some of our favorite places for hanging bridges walks, hot springs (our favorite has many pools of varying temperatures, water slides, peaceful places, swim-up bar, lets you be there all day and includes either lunch or dinner for $28-$50 per person, depending on the season). We will tell you about our most loved walks in the National Park area, a great restaurant for lunch if you choose to drive around Lake Arenal. This is rural Costa Rica, so you will be in a small town that mostly speaks Spanish, except for the various tourist all speak English as well. You will have lots of room to do as you wish. There are no shades on any of the windows, so we tend to go to bed early and rise early. The views are just too magnificent to cover with cloth. And no one is near you to see in anyway. Please consider a 4WD vehicle. the 12KM road to the Arenal National Park entrance has many pot holes. On this road you will pass the park entrance and drive about 8KM almost to El Castillo. The 1.2KM drive to our house is gravel and often rutted and if raining it will be muddy. That road is up hill and and can be challenging. Can it be done with a small car, yes, but you will be a lot happier with a 4WD vehicle. Your drive, either from San Jose or Liberia airport, will take approx. 3 hours to arrive at our house. YOU DO NOT WANT TO DRIVE IN COSTA RICA AT NIGHT, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN TO COSTA RICA BEFORE. So plan to arrive at the airport by Noon. We know, looking at a map, you believe you can get here a lot faster. But we have made the trip many times and it takes us about 3 hours to get here. Let us know your flight plans as soon as you can. If you cannot arrive by 6PM. plan to spend a night near the airport.

This house was truly amazing. Absolutely fantastic views, and so peaceful (especially when the weather was clear!). Amenities were fantastic with everything basic we needed. The only drawback at all (if you can call it that) was that the wifi did not reach either of the bedrooms (a definite "concern" for our teenagers!). Although some may find this attractive! ;)

This house had the most amazing views from the deck, great room and bedrooms. We could see Lake Arenal, Arenal Volcano and an amazing rain forest. The views were worth the 1 mile bumpy road to get there. The caretakers were great and attended to our every need.

We enjoyed our stay and the quietness of the area! We would stay here again. The birding is fantastic on the property.

The White Hawk was truly amazing! The lush gardens, the multitude of birds, one visit from a few white faced monkeys, one coati, the comfy wraparound porches with various angles of views of the Volcano, all made it quite spectacular. We enjoyed a walk down to the Phoenix every morning for breakfast and made friends with sweet Juan and his wife Juliana. Their little dog Luna had a new litter of puppies which Juan allowed me to meet. Good people!
The property manager Augustin was quick to respond to a few water issues and his daughter Juli came up our last afternoon for lovely massages on the porch.
I would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting to check out the Arenal area. As others have said, the road up from El Castillo necessitates a 4 WD vehicle but just take your time and it is quite doable. And well worth it!

Me and my husband stayed here for 3 nights it is definitely a beautiful place the views from every room are amazing plenty of seating areas to enjoy nature ,saw many hummingbirds and butterflies a couple of Tucan birds on the trees the place is in great condition just the sliding doors had an issue one was very loose and one was hard to open felt pretty secure you definitely need a 4 wheel drive to get to the property didn’t get to walk down to the river as it had rained a lot and made it pretty muddy also my husband jus had shoulder surgery and didn’t want to take a chance of him slipping and falling but I would’ve love to go down to the river overall I would definitely stay here again if I get to this are .

Great house with lots of places to soak in the views of the volcano and lake, even from the shower! Kitchen is very well stocked with lots of appliances and gadgets and we really appreciated the gas grill outside. Check in was super easy with a guide from the welcome center showing us to the property and giving us a quick tour. We all agreed this was our favorite house during our 2 week stay in Costa Rica.

We absolutely loved this spot! The grounds are filled with paths to explore all the way down the mountain to the creek. There were all kids of birds to watch from the balcony and the views were spectacular!!!
You will have fun driving up to the home so don’t under estimate the need for all wheel drive. The checkin was quick and easy and the home has all the amenities you could possibly need. We only wished we had more time to enjoy this awesome home!

The White Hawk has stunning views from every room as well as three decks. The house is beautifully crafted with art pieces and decorative plants in every room. Appliances are modern (everything you need), there is internet access, plenty of hanging out space, and the master bedroom is gorgeous and spacious. The White Hawk is perfect for a family of four. The second bedroom has a queen-sized bed which was fine for my 18 year old daughters to share, but something to consider. However, there is a futon as well that we didn't use. The views of the rain forest, Lake Arenal, and the volcano are simply stunning. I can't think of another place we have stayed with better views. El Castillo is not large but there are several outstanding restaurants 5-10 minutes from the house and it is only 30 minutes to La Fortuna. Don't led the road to the house scare you away. It is rutted and a 4WD is recommended but after we'd driven it once it was very routine. We had torrential rain several nights (but spectacular mornings and afternoons!) and the road was always in good condition so it is well-designed. It is bumpy (as are many Costa Rican roads) but there is no exposure. In addition to great restaurants (with very friendly owners and staff) we went on guided nature hikes, horse back riding, and zip line adventures all within 25 minutes of the house. Augustin at the Welcome Center in El Castillo made all our arrangements! He and his staff are terrific!

We loved our stay at this incredible house.
Coffee on the deck while watching the birds. Wonderful hikes right from the property and great restaurants close by. It was absolutely wonderful and the host’s communication was very good. Highly recommend

We enjoyed our stay. The location is great if you are looking for an authentic Costa Rican vacation. Do not book this home without a 4WD vehicle.
The house could use some maintenence. The house was not as clean as we would have expected. The kitchen had an old scrub brush and old sponge/scrubber. We replaced them. The gas stove is not something that is easy to cook on. It is hard to control the heat.
The glass walls in the bedrooms are great for viewing but curtains are needed. Not everyone wants to wake up each day at 5:00 am when the sun rises. I know we didn't.
All things considered we enjoyed our stay. The location is the biggest asset. Private and surrounded by nature.

We absolutely loved this property. The house was very spacious and the location was amazing. We had coffee in the mornings watching the sun come up over the volcano. We also enjoyed the view from the wall of glass in the evenings when the bugs were starting to come out. Will definitely stay again,

It is exactly as beautiful as it looks. Far away from the crowds of La Fortuna but about 6 minutes to the National Park. Great birding right from the deck and incredible morning views. The road to the house requires a 4x4. Worth every bump on the road and more. My son told me when we got there in complete awe, “We are millionaires!”

It was very disappointing to hear we were no longer getting complimentary breakfast for our stay on the very day we arrived. This was a main selling point for renting this property. I feel I was scammed. No one did anything to help me feel better about this after kindly expressing my dissatisfaction.

This home is in a perfect location, making it easy to explore all that Arenal has to offer, yet at the same time enjoy isolation in nature. While the house needs some maintenance by the owners, it is well equipped and offers stunning views from every room along with two wrap-around balconies.
Augustin, the caretaker, is spectacular in every way, as is Lilliam who manages laundry and linens.
I took a terrible fall during our stay and broke my leg, cutting our trip short. Because of Augustin, we were able to rapidly access excellent care which culminated in emergency surgery in San Jose. Who knows how this would have gone without Augustin’s care and support. Even on a weekend he responded within minutes.
We have visited Arenal nearly a dozen times over the last 30 years. While it has changed greatly, the magic remains. El Castillo embodies that magic.

We spent all of our time on the wrap around deck watch birds and listening to the waterfall. We enjoyed listening to the rainfall as well. Loved the house and the remote location.. I’d suggest a few updates; the refrigerator needs to be replaced and it needs an ice maker. We also expected to have access to a washer and dryer but they were for housekeeping use only..

We had wonderful stay in the house. It has everything: views, privacy, hiking trail to waterfall, short driving distance to La Fortuna, hot springs, etc. Would definitely recommend it to all our friends.

The house itself is worth the effort of the driveway but be prepared with a 4 WD vehicle. There are some tricky spots but it is well worth it. You'll love staying in this house and neighborhood. Pura Vida!!

We are so happy ,it was fantastic. Loved the llocation and we thought the Phoenix was really nice we ate there morning and night. We did take the waterfall hike and it also was a special treat.

This home is spectacular and one of the coolest places I have ever stayed. The views are magnificent and the sounds of the waterfall in the background make for a serene setting. We enjoyed hiking to the waterfall on the property in the rubber boots provided. The gardens are lovely and the care taken to maintain them is evident. We loved relaxing on the veranda

This home is surrounded with beauty. It
Is a very nice place to stay. We didn’t get to see the birds and wildlife we hoped to see but loved all the vegetation. We did see some himmingbirds.

This property is absolutely breathtaking! Having coffee on the deck, overlooking the beautiful flora and fauna on the property, while the mist settles against the backdrop of the Arenal Volcano and lake. A true place of serenity.
There are restaurants within a short driving distance. We didn't take advantage of the free breakfast, but we did eat at the restaurant for dinner and the food was delicious. I ordered a salad and watched as they walked to the garden to pick out some lettuce.
You will need to rent a vehicle with AWD. The rods are rocky and gutted from all of the rain. I wish someone would have told me that the major highways do not have any signage, and when traveling through the very small towns, the signs are rusted and illegible. From now on, I will print out a topographical map from Google that includes local landmarks. That would have been much easier and saved a lot of frustration.
We will definatley book this propery again. And again.

If you are a plant nut, this is your heaven on earth. The outdoor landscape & trails to explore are breathtaking and such a joy. The photographs inside are phenomenal. Road is, as mentioned treacherous. 4 wheel drive required when raining. Well worth it.
Only tiny negative would be the noise from the upstairs glass doors when raining hard. (bring earplugs)Volcano & forest views are indescribably impressive. Loved it!

Beautiful home, high up a rutted dirt road.....normal for costa Rica. This home was a class above most rentals, with spacious use of glass, for an amazing view. Well stocked and very clean, it has a bidet in the master bath. Only have one minor complaint. The washer and dryer are off limits to the tenants and you must pay the cleaning lady $5.00 per load of wash. This is an expensive rental and the added cost for clean clothes seems a little unnecessary. But, to be fair, this was offset by the free breakfast at the Phoenix Restaurant just down the road. Would definitely rent this property again.

My husband and I stayed at this property for 4 nights in October. The views and home are beyond what pictures can capture. Walking room to room the volcano commands your attention. We were fortunate enough to have many completely clear views of the Volcano. While also getting to enjoy thunderstorms. We feel like we saw the very best of the rain forest. The home is very comfortable and had everything we needed. There are several good restaurants at the bottom of the driveway. This is Costa Rica and many of the best views have challenging driveways, but nothing beyond what our small 4 wheel drive could handle. We highly recommend staying here.

What an absolutely beautiful place to stay and our caretakers were super sweet! Take advantage of the beautiful gardens and private waterfall! Enjoy the abundance of wildlife from the porch overlooking Arenal. We were greeted each morning by a family of toucans and an amazing sunrise. Wish we never had to leave!

Great house-Even better deck
We loved the house. Well stocked kitchen. Friendly, easy check in. Loved the breakfast down at the Phoenix. We loved the patio and spent most of our time out there. Watching the toucans and listening to howler monkeys. What is with all the showers in CR, they are all fantastic. I didn’t want to get out and ended up emptying the propane tank. It was quickly replaced and we were up and running again. I enjoyed the garden and was way too lazy to hike to the private falls. Next time CR. The bedroom upstairs has great windows and sliding doors that open with screens and we did not need AC at all.

Loved our stay
My husband and I enjoyed a really wonderful 3 night stay here last week. The house is great - just as described and super clean (very important to us) and we spent most of our “at home” time on the back porch, listening to the forest sounds and enjoying the rain and the ever changing views of the volcano. The house was perfect for us - quiet, off the beaten path and very comfortable. Agustin was great to deal with and extremely responsive to our questions and needs. Highly recommend this unique and wonderful property!

Relaxing & Remote
This home was beautiful. The view, the sounds of the rain, birds, and frogs and the early sunrises were exactly what we needed. Agustín, the host/manager, was very communicative, kind and helpful. I also met his wife who is a massage therapist and offered her services to come to the house and give me a massage which was absolutely wonderful! Be aware when you book this that the driveway is definitely long and bumpy, as least 10 minutes to go up or down (or 6 if you drive fast off-roading). The only things I didn’t love are (1) the mattress was not amazing. It was comfortable enough but a bit squeaky and could feel a couple of springs, and it’s not a large bed. It was comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up with a backache, but I think it’s time to upgrade the mattress. Luckily the view from the bed made up for it :) For housekeeping; several of the dishes (water glasses and wine glasses) in the cupboard were not clean, so I had to wash the dishes again before using them. I think if you’re trusting the guests to wash the dishes, you should double-check that they’re actually clean before you put them back in the cupboard. One of the mornings, the housekeeper came in without knocking, just unlocked the door and came in. I was walking around undressed and my partner was sleeping. I had mentioned that I didn’t want any housekeeping unless we were out. Apparently she didn’t know we were there, but our car was parked right there in the carport so I’m not sure how she missed it. Other than those two things, the house was very beautiful and Agustín was awesome and I would probably stay there again.

The home has a beautiful view of Arenal and the lake. I spent most of my time outside at the property enjoying the birds and wildlife. The trails on the property are well kept. The roads in Costa Rica and to the home are in far better condition than we expected. If you spend any time in the outdoors, four wheel drive is not necessary and you will have no problem getting around. Breakfast is included at the restaurant down the road and the server, Juan is fantastic! I really enjoyed my time here.

We loved our stay! The views are unbeatable, with views of the Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal right from the patio. The house was comfortable and had everything we needed for our stay. The communication and checkin process was easy, with everything explained in plenty of detail. We loved the breakfasts at the Phoenix restaurant that are included, we even went to dinner there a couple of nights. We also enjoyed the binoculars at the house and the hike to the waterfall right from the backyard. We would definitely recommend a stay here, and are already dreaming of o ur next visit!

WOW WOW WOW!! We have stayed at many rentals around the world and this one is on the top! The pictures do not even do this house and view justice. Sitting on the porch with views of the lake and volcano make you never want to leave. The location is perfect. Close enough to all activities but far enough to feel restful and secluded. Don’t miss the Phoenix restaurant. We were only here for two nights but wish we were there for a week. Check-in and check-out was easy and hosts had great communication!! This is a must stay!
