Black Elk Resort looked pretty and had the right price tag when I booked. I did NOT expect the little piece of heaven that we stepped in to when checking in. Becky gave us all sorts of info about the property and taproom and recs for the area. The room was comfortable and the views were amazing. I want to come back again and enjoy it with just my husband next time.

I booked the Northwoods cabin for my last stop on a 5 day sightseeing road trip. I’m usually very cautious of local-owned places due to a few very bad experiences in the past. Thankfully, Black Elk Resort is not one of those places. Dan and Lora are two of the nicest people, and the facilities are clean and comfortable. The taproom onsite is a great place to unwind and enjoy some drinks and conversation with fellow guests and the hosts themselves. If you’re looking for a great place to stay in the Black Hills area during the summer, look no further.

We loved staying at this cottage. Very clean! The owners/ host were fabulous! I don’t leave many reviews but needed to for this hidden gem. We stayed here after reading the reviews of other guests and was not disappointed. Close to everything we wanted to do. Especially coming back to unwind and going to the Taproom for beer and wine. Also getting to know some of the other guests that were staying there as well. This hidden gem will not disappoint. Dan and Lora welcomed you as friends but definitely made you feel like family.

We loved our stay here. The kids could run and play on the playground equipment safely. Dan and Lora were so welcoming and friendly. They treated our kids like their own. We loved the nightly bonfires and getting to chat with other guests. So fun to learn about everyone’s different travels.
All requirements for staying were clearly outlined in a binder. I appreciate their efforts in sustainability.

The resort is very cute and very well kept. The owner was super helpful helping us find good restaurants nearby. The room was clean. My only issues were the sulfur smell of the water, which I know they cannot help and the tv in our room was mounted on the wall facing straight ahead with all 3 beds to the side so you couldn't relax in bed and watch tv at night because you couldn't really see the tv. But those issues were minor and I would stay there again.

Black Elk lodge is in a great location, and clean and maintained to a very high level. But beyond that, Lora and Dan are so helpful. They helped with suggesting scenic drives to take, sites to see, places to eat, as well being great people to visit with.
Thanks Lora & Dan, we'll be back definitely!

We stayed at one of Dan and Loras cabins and we loved it! The cabin was very clean and in the perfect spot for a peaceful stay. They gave us a great dinner recommendation, which we tried and loved! They are very nice and make you feel at home. I would 100% recommend the Black Elk Resort to anyone looking for a nice getaway in the black hills.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Black Elk Resort. The owners were so very accommodating and the cottage was absolutely lovely! This is a convenient location for visiting Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and Keystone.

Very good spot with or with out kids. The room is nice and clean. Feels like your cabin in the woods. But you are close to town and Mt. Rushmore and the other parks.

What a great place to stay. This was easily the best place we stayed at during our time in the Hills. Lora and Dan are great hosts and made our stay even better. Make sure you spend some time in the taproom as they have some local brews to choose from. We can’t wait too stay here again.

Cozy and welcoming.
Poor water pressure. Shower water smelled like sulphur.

Don’t hesitate to book here. We had 5 in our family and compared to a hotel this was so much better for us. Place was clean, owners were great, and we were close to Rushmore, Custer, and the other local attractions.

Beautiful place. Very clean. Very friendly owners. Only downfall is no cell service and internet connection almost nothing. But hey. Youre in the wilderness. To be expected.

Cabin was very clean and comfortable, but we had very little internet/cell service which was a problem for us. I understand they're aware and working on a solution.

Our trip to South Dakota was amazing. We stayed at Black Elk Resort and it couldn’t have been any better. We had easy access to everything from Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer, Wind Cave, the Badlands, Bear Country and so much more. Lora and Dan were great hosts very informative and helpful with everything from weather to food suggestions and sights to see. Cant say enough about this place! It was fantastic!!!

Our stay in Mammoth was great. The place was clean and equipped well enough for a group of guys on a BHNF exploration trip. The location made it easy to travel to any section of the forest we wanted to in a day. No cell service and not great WiFi in the cabin made for a nice break from our overly connected lives.

Everything a group of four needed for a weekend deer hunting in the hills! We bought a few groceries to prepare meals in the kitchenette, stayed cozy and refreshed. Everything worked great!

The cottage we stayed in was exactly as pictured and described online. Perfect for our family of four. The owners were very nice and welcoming when we arrived and during our stay. Our kids thoroughly enjoyed the onsite playground after days of traveling in the car. The tap house was a great place to relax and chat with others. It was nice to return after a day out and bbq dinner then sit by the fire and make smores for the kids. We would definitely stay here again!

No phone signal, no wifi, no water pressure, no grip on shower floor,Beautiful setting nice room. Great host. Not so good on price for a so called resort. Woyld not stay unless improvements were made. Had to run into hill city to make phone calls to loved ones.

The property was right off the highway so finding it was easy. It had a large area for children and families to play and a fire to enjoy at night. The cabin we stayed at was super clean and spacious. The staff was very courteous and friendly. It is a dead spot for cell phones so be aware and the wifi connection is outside of the cabin in an open pavillion. So that was a bit difficult for our stay. Our TV didn't have satellite due to a new roof but we were compensated really well from the owners and we did appreciate that a lot. It was a wonderful place to stay and felt like home.

We stayed for 4 nights in Mammoth cottage. It was very clean and cozy. It had everything we needed in the kitchen. There were also plenty of towels and toiletries. The grounds were well maintained with plenty of grills outside. I would definitely stay here again. The resort was close to all the sights such as Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse. Custer state park and the cute little towns.
