Considering it is located on the A40, the Charlton is delightfully quiet - at least our room, No 11 is as it points away from the road and into its own wooded area which is also, delightfully, the car park. Our standard en suite was fairly small - not much room to do morning stretch exercises! The shower room was fine, though as always with such places, there was little room to hang towels up after use.
In our room, the mattress was VERY soft and gave no support. In general, though the guy behind the bar was friendly and helpful, the atmosphere was dead. We met one other member of staff who, when we entered the 'restaurant' to have an evening meal, was sitting at a table staring into the distance. The menu had little to commend it and in the end we just ordered a wrap with salad, determined not to risk breakfast there on the morrow Everywhere we looked there were seats and little tables but no customers, although the carpark had ten cars in it. I think Charlton 'Boutique' Hotel is misleading. It's a place waiting for the hordes to descend on it; maybe sometimes they do!; maybe it comes alive then?
