The sleeping room and bathroom were very clean. Having laundry facilities was a bonus after being a week in Japan - and very reasonable! The futon mattress looked to be almost new and while a bit hard (that could be just me as I’m almost 60 and used to a Tempurpedic bed), the futon coverlet was divine (super puffy). My son (a first time visitor to Japan) found it to be a very cool and unique experience. For my husband and me (who both lived in Japan 35 years ago), it brought back fond memories of our apartments. For those who want a more authentic Japanese experience, we would recommend this ryokan for sure!

clean room, very well maintained property, very friendly helpful staff, staff also knew good english so it was very easy to get suggestions for getting recommendations from hotel staff. overall very good experience

We had a wonderful stay at Matsubaya Ryokan in Kyoto! The hotel is truly a ryokan, and we loved getting to experience sleeping on a futon in a traditional Japanese-style setting. It made our stay feel very authentic and special.
The breakfast was very good, and the staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The hotel was also very clean and well maintained.
One of our favorite touches was the little area with Japanese cultural props where guests can take pictures. It was such a fun way to enjoy and remember the experience.
Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend Matsubaya Ryokan to anyone looking for an authentic Japanese experience in Kyoto. We would happily stay here again! 🇯🇵❤️
