Location, pool, decent rooms as they have been recently refurbished.
The breakfast is utterly hopeless. I did not really eat much. Very limited menu. Staff not very helpful or polite. Half the breakfast tables were dirty. You get charged for every single thing which was unlike compared to all the other hotels in Uzbekistan we stayed. Staff cannot speak English properly at all so can be fairly difficult to communicate.

luckly, the taxis in Samarkand are cheap.
the city is not compact, with an old part where you can walk on foot - these areas are scattered in Registon part and other parts of Samarkand.
so, Orient star is not too close to them, but at least is a clean hotel and with a good breakfast.
