Most of the reviews talk about how this is a family place and you are made to feel like part of the family. That is true, and the family in question are extremely nice people. Adriano and Filomena and two of their children and a daughter-in-law and grandchild also live there, so you are with their family when you are not in your room. I normally would not like that, but they are such kind and lovely people that I grew to like them and enjoy our time together.
The pensao is a ten minute walk from the center of "town," such as it is, so it has nothing around it except other houses. You have to walk to find other restaurants, bars, other hotels, etc. The pensao has an entry building that is a house. Two or three rooms are there. Then you pass through a courtyard and see the building that hosts the dining space and kitchen. That is the one in the photos that has the excellent view of the volcano. Then you walk around that building to an area that has four round "traditional" structures that are rooms, and four square rooms. Each is an independent building.
The food was very good, and, in my case, far more than I needed.
The view from my room was of the volcano, which was very nice.
You can arrange all of the typical hikes and visits, as well as airport transfers with the pensao. Adriano Jr is the driver; in fact, his job every day is driving a collective taxi to the island's capital and back.
There is a bit of a construction site feel to the property right now. Once you get to the eight independent structures that are most of the rooms, it's very nice, but you have to walk through a lot of concrete and tools and an unattractive worksite feel to get there.
There may be water and electricity restrictions, if that matters to you. It did not bother me. This is not the pensao's fault. The town is powered by solar power and it was not working-- for the entire town-- so the pensao was using its generator, but not all the time. Similarly, there is a serious water shortage, so you are asked to use as little as possible.
The location is not as good as several of the other pensaos. They are "downtown" or are much larger and more self-contained; this pensao is a bit isolated in a residential part of town.
