I really enjoyed the location of the Australian Heritage Hotel — being right in The Rocks made it easy to walk to Circular Quay, the ferries, and all the historic laneways. The pub downstairs was a highlight, with a great atmosphere, friendly staff, and solid food that gave the place a classic Aussie charm.
I didn’t like that the guest common area was locked until 8am, which made mornings inconvenient and left nowhere to sit or regroup early in the day. The shared bathrooms felt more like hostel facilities than hotel amenities, and the rooms themselves were quite dated and basic. Overall, the upstairs guest areas seemed neglected, as if the lodging side wasn’t a priority compared to the pub downstairs.

It’s not a regular hotel with your own bathroom etc, it is rooms on top of a pub with shared living and bathroom facilities. But this adds to its charm and for us it’s a new experience. We did see another couple come in and they seemed a little horrified. The thing to remember is that it’s a historic building and both the ambiance and the location are amazing.we spent 4 nights there and loved it. Food and drink in the pub were amazing and make sure you get to happy hour!
It wasn’t an issue for us but two things stood out that travelers need to be aware of, the stairs are steep and narrow, especially with full suitcases, and not much room in our room to unpack. The second thing to realize is that it’s on top of a pub so it can be quite loud until late at night.

Location! It was nice having the bar and restaurant there! And the breakfast fruits were delicious
Had some issues with what felt like should have been NON issues: such as our window wouldn’t close all the way! There was about a six inch gap clear at the top! This made our room extra noisy, and with the older windows/walls It was already very noisy! In all directions and very late into the night! Not a good place to sleep on a game night! I couldn’t turn on the bathroom lights in one of the shared bathrooms, which I was unaware of that we wouldn’t have our own! It is winter…. And our room was extremely cold! Several steep stairs and no elevator. Staff was great to assist with luggage on arrival.
