As a long-time Genius member on Booking.com, I expected a baseline level of reliability and support when things went wrong. Unfortunately, this stay was an absolute nightmare from start to finish.
Due to a medical need for climate control and travel logistics, my husband and I frequently book vacation rentals. On this particular trip, we arrived in town late and booked this property on short notice, trusting the listing description. The place was advertised as a "duplex," but after doing some research, we learned it is actually a single-family home chopped up into multiple living spaces.
When we checked in, my husband settled inside in his travel clothes while I picked up my son. Upon returning, my husband was wearing a hoodie over his clothes because it was already chilly. Knowing he takes blood thinners (which makes him sensitive to the cold), we hoped the house would warm up as the evening went on. Also, that first evening a woman showed up at the house claiming to be there on behalf of the owner to bring supplies. She had no supplies.
Instead, it plummeted. By morning, the thermostat read an unbearable 52 degrees.
When I checked my messages, I discovered a thread message from the homeowner outlining strict rules: we were forbidden from touching certain light switches (under threat of exterior security system failure) and, crucially, we were forbidden from adjusting the air conditioning/heat thermostat, with a threatened $1,500 fine for doing so.
When I finally reached out to the host to explain that it was freezing and we just needed to turn up the heat without being penalized, we were met with silence. We waited an hour, received only automated messages, and made three separate phone calls to Booking.com. Neither Booking.com nor we were ever able to reach the host.
The cold became so unbearable that we simply could not stay. We packed up, called Booking.

Definitely do not recommend unsafe and smell of mold!
Property had a very strong smell of mildew and mold!!!! And the rug was dirty also the bathroom! Once I commented on what was wrong the owner proceeded to curse me out! Asked me to send proof but of course I can’t send proof of a smell! I called and he was out and repeatedly asked who was calling like he forgot he even had a property that was being booked! Called next morning and he cursed me out for calling! Very unprofessional I definitely do not recommend staying here! They need to do serious work before having visitors!
