About this cabin rental

Named after a mythical creature, Hodag House is sure to make your Northwoods getaway a magical experience. This new construction cabin’s A-frame style fits perfectly into its lakefront woods location. It features soaring ceilings, open plan layout, a gorgeous gas fireplace, with a charming, welcoming, and quirky interior design that will make you feel instantly at home. And make you never want to leave!

Your host runs Bark Point Ventures, a vacation rental management & concierge company that specializes in properties on Lake Superior's South Shore. She lives nearby and is available 24/7 to assist her guests. Our passion is ensuring guests experience the magic of what we feel is one of the most amazing places in the world.

Hodag House is on the open-water side of Bark Point, a spit of land that extends several miles out into Lake Superior. There's a boat landing nearby where you can check out the bay behind the point, and you're also just a few minutes from the beautiful estuary at the head of the bay. To get your feet wet in the lake there’s no better spot than Herbster Beach, which is just a few minutes down the road.

The other South Shore towns, Port Wing to the west and Cornucopia to the east, are both close by, both with their own beaches. Port Wing has an awesome coffee shop that roasts its own beans (we stock them in the house) and a great little convenience store with a fish counter. Cornucopia (or ‘Corny' as the locals call it) has an excellent coffee shop, a general store, and a few restaurants and shops. It can be a little more crowded, but it's got a few more amenities, too. Bayfield is close by, too, about 45 minutes’ drive: perfect to check out the attractions over there then return to your South Shore oasis for another Superior sunset. Ashland, where you’ll find more stores and amenities, is just under an hour away. Duluth and Superior are about and hour and a quarter to the west.

The South Shore is truly a place to get away from it all, but not so far from modern conveniences that getting food and gas feels like a chore. The guest book contains tips on all the incredible outdoor activities around here, as well as local arts, plus places to get groceries, dine out, grab a drink, etc. This is truly a year-round destination, whether you enjoy outdoor adventure, local cuisine, art, or simply the company of friends & family in one of the most beautiful locations in the northern U.S.

The home is just a few minutes from the center of Cornucopia, which has a delightful general store/market, awesome coffee shop, bar/restaurant, and marina. Bayfield is about 35 minutes away, as is Washburn (where you’ll find the largest grocery store in the area). Ashland is about 45 minutes away, with a natural foods co-op, Wal-Mart, and a wider range of shops). Superior & Duluth are an hour and a bit away.

Hodag House is nestled on a wooded lakefront lot, offering a feeling of privacy and serenity, thanks to the natural beauty that surrounds the cabin. The cabin is a traditional a frame style with two-story ceilings in the great room, which houses the living area, dining room, and kitchen. Large windows (and a set of sliding glass doors) look out onto the woods with the lake just beyond. There are no pets allowed at this home.

The cabin’s primary bedroom is off the living area, which has a queen bed. The upstairs loft area has two twin beds and an office space with a sit/stand desk. The kitchen is a cook’s delight, with gas range, ample counter space, tons of cabinets, and a full range of appliances and utensils. The living & dining area is anchored by a gas fireplace - in cooler temperatures, nothing beats gazing out the wall of windows while enjoying the warmth of the fire. The cabin’s bathroom is equally charming & modern, with a bathtub and rain shower.

Charming and thoughtful touches are found throughout the cabin, from the local art, quirky decor pieces, and creature comforts. You can plug your laptop or tablet direct into the HDMI connection wired into the wall below the tv to stream whatever you’d like. Or play games and read books about the area’s history & attractions, thanks to the well-curated library provided by the owners. To those fellow geeks: you’ll be delighted by the Hue light system, which allows you to change the color scheme of the cabin’s overhead lighting (will you prefer Northern Lights or perhaps sunset hues?). Creature comforts extend to the home’s extremely zippy wifi and split A/C and heating units.

There is as much to enjoy outside of the cabin as well. Just beyond the sliding glass doors is the patio area, which has a custom-built picnic table, gas grill, and the most amazing fire pit we’ve ever seen: a HUGE Solo Stove that makes starting and maintaining a campfire a breeze. A short stroll down gravel paths will take you through the trees to two amazing vantage points: from one you can sit and gaze at the incredible lake vistas as well as view the Bald Eagles which nest close by. The second path takes you to our favorite spot: a set of stairs that take you down to near the shoreline (note: the stairs do not offer direct lake/beach access). On warmer days, this is an incredible spot from which to read (or even work - as the wifi extends to the stairs), while you enjoy the sounds and views of the water. If you’re ambitious, you can continue down the stairs (there are about 200 of them!).

*Please note that there are exterior cameras monitoring the front door and the driveway.

We are confident you will love Hodag House as much as we do! The only scary thing about your visit will be how fearful you become of having to ever leave!

Due to the lack of public transportation and the distance between towns/amenities, a car is pretty much essential. But, on the plus side, traffic is not a concept we have up here! If you're visiting in an EV, you can say goodbye to range anxiety--Hodag House has an NACS charger, and it's free for guests to use!

As much as we love dogs, canine guests are NOT allowed at this property. We're happy to help you locate a dog-friendly rental should you require one.
Watch children near bluff/water's edge, as there is no fencing.
This home is in a heavily wooded area: seasonal pests/bugs can be expected.
There is an outdoor security camera on site.

Very nice, cozy & quiet, the cabin was clean, furnished well and we had everything we needed. Disappointed that shops and restaurants close by were mostly closed, only open Thursday - Sunday. We will plan better next time. A highlight was the wildlife, deer, turkey, including a visit from a black bear that strolled through the property. A great time, will definitely visit again.
