Property’s History:

Colle’s land was granted from Thomas Jefferson in 1773 to an Italian viticulturist from Tuscany, Philip Mazzei.  Mazzei planted vines and built the original Colle in 1773.  Around 1930, Colle was disassembled and it’s thought that parts of the home’s exterior were put to use for the renovation of Charlottesville’s Michie Tavern, located a few miles away.   In 1939 the Woodward family purchased the property and  rebuilt Colle on the original foundation.  Today, the wine culture still flows strong through out the property.   Directly across the street sits Jefferson Vineyards. Take a stroll over to their two tasting rooms and enjoy the beautiful Mountain View and sprawling vineyard.

Great property, however had some minor issues.1. There was a mouse in the kitchen2. Downstairs shower did not drain well, water backed up.3. TV did not work well, trouble connecting to internet.

We loved our stay at Colle - beautiful property and the pool was a highlight. We hiked the Saunders-Monticello path every morning around the corner, took the kids for fresh peaches at Carter's Mountain and walked across the street to Jefferson vineyards for wine & dinner one night. Despite the expansive property and privacy, you're still close to everything in C'ville. The many bedrooms and bathrooms worked well for our group. Kitchen was well stocked. FYI there is no washer/dryer in the house :)

We had a wonderful time at this beautiful home.

The pros: beautiful property and garden in a quiet, scenic location. Interesting architecture, great for a big group. There is a pool that is a big bonus. It was closed when we were there, but would be really lovely in summer. It’s a fabulous house for a group, particularly adults who want to spread out. Lots of privacy. 3 bedrooms up and 3 down. The kitchen is very big for a group and there are two big tables and chairs for eating. Cons: No patio furniture or Adirondack chairs to get comfortable outside and spend time outside. There is a table under a tree and it’s lovely but small metal chairs. Not somewhere you’d sit and read and relax. It is well worn. Refrigerator bins broken, lights around sink upstairs don’t work. Doors in living room to outside can’t be opened. Bathroom upstairs had hair on shower wall. Mostly, it was clean but it was hard to get comfortable there. Two sofas in living room were low to floor. One was a standard height and comfortable. No easy chairs. It’s not that there was anything big wrong, and there is a lot that is really nice, but for the price I was expecting more polish and comfort.
