The property is very close to Stromness (it's close to everywhere - it's a small island!). The road outside is quite fast and busy but this doesn't affect the comfort of the stay. Some of the archeological sites are close enough to walk to as well. The views from the property are spectacular and we were treated to the Northern Lights on three nights despite heavy cloud and rain.
Maeshowe MUST be booked in advance or you will be disappointed. I went on a tour of the upper levels of St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall. Again, it needed booking. The tour was 1.5 hours and we actually went into the belfry and outside at the top of the tower. Very narrow stone spiral steps and tight passageways make it not suitable for the faint-hearted but it's worth every penny and very informative.
Having lived on an outer isle for four years I would advise that, if you island hop, you don't take chances with the weather. Boats do get cancelled so you can get stranded on an island overnight. If in doubt, check at the booking office!
There's nothing to not like. Always be aware of the weather - our return crossing (Stromness - Scrabster) was unpleasant so either go in the better months or be prepared for a bit of a dodgy crossing and/or disruption to travel plans.

Stunning views, comfortable and very clean
Couldn’t find the whirligig for outside drying. No outside bin or recycling facilities at the property.
