Odeon Palace Hotel

This hidden gem makes you feel as though you've stepped back in time to another era. From the moment you enter the reception area, the history is palpable, and the décor bears testament to the grandeur of cosmopolitan Qasr El Nil in its heyday. The rooftop bar is the ideal place to enjoy a chilled bottle of Stella beer while taking in the sounds of the city below. It's also a great place to interact with locals, who begin flocking in from around 10 p.m. May, the general manager, is phenomenally helpful and goes out of her way to assist guests with everything from day tours and transport options to recommendations for restaurants, sightseeing and shopping. The Odeon Palace is infused with a unique character and possesses a certain je ne sais quoi that ultimately made our experience in Cairo all the more memorable. We wholeheartedly recommend a stay at this wonderfully historic hotel.

Odeon Palace Hotel is a boutique gem nestled right in the heart of downtown Cairo. The location alone is exceptional — steps away from the city's bustling shopping lanes, the Egyptian Museum, and the iconic Nile Corniche. But what truly sets this place apart is its soul. The moment you walk in, the interiors transport you back to old Cairo. The owners have lovingly preserved the character of the hotel just as it was fifty years ago, making it feel like a beautifully lived-in period piece rather than a generic hotel. The rooms are cozy and the panoramic views of downtown Cairo are breathtaking. The rooftop bar, open 24 hours, is an absolute highlight — incredible views, wonderful ambiance, and great drinks. The staff have been there for years and it shows. They treat the place like their own home, and that warmth naturally extends to every guest. You never feel disturbed or out of place. You simply feel at ease. And then there is May, who runs the hotel alongside her grandmother. She went above and beyond in every sense. As a solo female traveller, I was touched by how personally she took it upon herself to make sure I had the best experience in Cairo. She offered thoughtful recommendations, walked me through the neighbourhood, and even helped me attend an important conference I was hoping to get into — and accompanied me to it. It felt less like a hotel stay and more like being welcomed by a friend in a new city. I have never felt this comfortable or this safe at any hotel I have stayed at before. For solo female travellers especially, this place is a haven. Excellent location. Outstanding staff. Great value for money. Beautiful interiors. And a warmth that is entirely down to the people who run it. I will absolutely return, and I wholeheartedly recommend Odeon Palace to anyone visiting Cairo.

This old hotel in the downtown area of Cairo was our preferred choice since we wanted to stay somewhere with a bit of vintage character. It has plenty of that, our room had been recently modernised but still tastefully decorated. We were there for six nights. May (the owner) put in an appearance mid-week and was very helpful, assisting us with an airport transfer, providing info on good local restaurants nearby and even providing my young son with an age-appropriate book and some postcards on Egyptian ancient history.

While May was very helpful, the same could not be said of the hotel staff. At best they could be summarised as pedestrian, not really very helpful, providing wrong information and on two separate occasions, I spotted the receptionist asleep at the desk. The rooftop restaurant lacked sparkle, the menu lacked imagination there was a lot of noise in the night from people coming to drink there after the city restaurants had closed. Also the shower was temperamental with scalding hot temperatures one moment and freezing cold the next, without any obvious reason.
