SCAM - RECENT MURDER - AVOID THIS NIGHTMARE -BOOKING.COM IS A SCAM FACILITATOR
Key points: MURDER - Aggression from neighbors - False listing - Mold- Section 8 (The building is government subsidized housing) - No phone number for host - Stay requires everyone staying to own a smartphone - CANNOT CANCEL within 24HRS AFTER BOOKING DESPITE ALL OF THESE
We booked this apartment on the 29th, looking for a place to stay with a parking garage. The listing back then stated that there was reserved parking on site for a fee. We arrived on the 30th. Arriving in the evening, my husband had to wait for an hour outside while they were uncontactable. Eventually they activated his phone through a required app to use as the key for the front door, elevator, and the door room. There is no actual key even for your own door, you must always have a charged smartphone with their app on each of your phones.
I arrive, still in the early evening, expecting to be able to work out parking, rather than spend the next five hours unloading the car instead of valuables stolen from insecure local parking. This is why we booked a place that was listed as having reserved parking available. Naively thinking that Booking.com would have our back if the host had an intentionally misleading listing. But apparently on booking.com non-refundable means non-refundable even if the entire listing was a scam. It turns out we would be able to figure out whether or not parking was possible only the next day, so to stay there that night, we would have to spend the night unloading the entire car, completely negating the purpose of the parking and the purpose of booking this apartment at all.
The photos of the airbnb are extremely deceptive. The actual place feels like a musty hotel room closet. Take note the only room with access to windows is the bedroom.
My husband came out to let me in the building, not owning a smartphone the building was inaccessible to me. As he came out, a man came out and began provocatively yelling at my husband. He was very hostile out, had his child not been there it may have become violent. Entering the room, a strong musty mold stench in the air, opening the windows doesn't help. Visible water damage in the ceiling of the kitchen. I have a mold allergy. I call booking.com as they inform me that if I'm scammed or if the property is unsafe it is the scammers choice whether or not to return my money, and suggested I offer to pay for the first five days in the hopes that will warm them up to refunding the rest of the stay. (The host obviously refused)
While preparing to leave at least for the night as staying was impractical due to the parking situation, a friendly neighbor encounters us and tries to enter the apartment unit multiple times. They end up also informing us that a few days prior there was a MURDER that took place in the building a few doors down from this apartment. They show us the news article pertaining to it and how disturbing it is that no one in the building cares. They go on to mention that they would never live here if it weren't section 8 (government subsidized) housing, and that the water frequently goes out. They got even more curious to see our apartment after hearing it was somehow staged so well to get two fools to book it for a month site unseen. We left. We did not spend a single night and tried to cancel within 24hrs of booking, immediately after arriving at the property, and felt unsafe.
Of the $3,800 we spent, they returned $2,000 after we threatened legal action. We are grateful of that. Still unsure if legal action or the police are a better approach, in case they are illegally renting out government subsidized housing. I will never again use booking.
