Casa Terra is ideally located in one of the nice and peaceful green valleys of the island. Demanding trails on donkey and mule paths all over.
The place is reachable only on foot, from the bottom of the valley Janela village up; such, depending on your physical condition, requires 45 to 60 mins 20% uphill. Don’t overlook this part.
Luggage carry-on assistance can be provided by donkey with prior notice to the owner.
But then, once up there, peace, quiet, 360° view on sea and surrounding mountains and most of, Lucia’s unlimited attentiveness, expertise and advise.
She knows all about the island, trails, must see and go to spots, whether you’re hiking, driving with rented car or using the local aluguer services.
If you’re a dog lover, Luna will greet you endlessly and be desperate to play and/or await attention.
Food, from appetisers to desserts, and drink (local herbs’ tea, caipirinhas, grogue,…) wise, you’ll be fulfilled; all from her garden and locals.

To stay at Lucia’s house is a once in a lifetime experience, located at the top of a mountain with ocean view as well as mountain/valley view. Lucia is an amazing, friendly host who also cooks really nice meals. Lovely!

Casa Terra Odje N’Mar war für mich mit Abstand die beste Unterkunft meiner gesamten Reise auf Santo Antão. Die Lage ist einfach außergewöhnlich. Morgens beim Frühstück den Sonnenaufgang über dem Atlantik zu beobachten, umgeben von Bergen, Meer und dieser unglaublichen Ruhe, war jedes Mal aufs Neue wunderschön. Abends dann zuschauen, wie das Mondlicht unten auf das Meer scheint, einfach nur wow! Ich hätte dort stundenlang einfach nur sitzen und die Aussicht genießen können. Und ich habe dort wirklich so, so, so gut geschlafen. Zimmer und alles sieht genau so aus wie auf den Bildern, da Lucia selbst viel gereist ist, ist ihr Transparenz nämlich sehr wichtig. Auch mit dem Weg zur Unterkunft, war alles wie von ihr beschrieben und sie hat mich sogar unten abgeholt, um mich zu begleiten.
Was diesen Ort aber wirklich besonders macht, ist Lucia. Ich bin alleine gereist und habe mich vom ersten Moment an unglaublich willkommen und wohl gefühlt. Lucia ist eine unglaublich herzliche, aufmerksame und hilfsbereite Gastgeberin. Ich hatte während meines Aufenthalts so viele schöne und interessante Gespräche mit ihr und habe sie als Person wirklich ins Herz geschlossen. Sie ist eine unglaublich tolle und bewundernswerte Frau und genau diese persönliche Seite hat meinen Aufenthalt noch einmal viel besonderer gemacht.
Ein absolutes Highlight war auch das Essen. Lucia baut fast alles, was für die Speisen verwendet wird, selbst an und legt großen Wert darauf, gesund, frisch und lokal zu kochen. Das schmeckt man auch. Zwischendurch hat sie mir immer wieder frisches Obst und selbstgemachten Tee mit Kräutern aus ihrem eigenen Kräutergarten angeboten. Es sind genau diese kleinen, liebevollen Gesten, die zeigen, wie viel Herz in diesem Ort steckt.
Auch bei meinen Wanderungen hat Lucia mir enorm geholfen. Sie kennt die Gegend unglaublich gut, hat mir bei der Planung meiner Routen geholfen und mir sogar spontan angeboten, mich gemeinsam mit ihrem Hund Luna auf einer Wanderung zu begleiten.

I really enjoyed my stay here. The host is very responsive, helpful and welcoming. She even arranged for someone to help us carry our luggage which was very convenient. The guesthouse is a great place to experience the quieter and more authentic side of Santo Antão, surrounded by mountains and nature. I would especially recommend it to hikers and people who enjoy a more remote setting.
The guesthouse is uphill so there is a long and steep walk to reach it. Luggage assistance is available though and if you are in Santo Antão to hike and explore the location should not be a problem.
