Baixa, meaning "downtown" in Portuguese, is one of the most iconic and historic neighbourhoods in Lisbon, Portugal. Situated in the city's heart, Baixa is renowned for its grand plazas, elegant architecture, and vibrant atmosphere.
One of the defining features of Baixa is its grid-like street layout, which was meticulously planned and rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1755. This area is characterised by wide boulevards, ornate squares, and neoclassical buildings adorned with intricate facades and decorative tiles known as azulejos.
At the centre of Baixa lies the majestic Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square), one of Lisbon's most emblematic landmarks. Yellow-painted buildings flank this expansive plaza, which offers stunning Tagus River views. It is a hub for cultural events, street performers, and visitors taking strolls along the waterfront.
