About this house rental

Welcome to The Clocktower House at historic Whitehall Estate — where Cumbrian heritage, beautiful design and countryside come together.

Wake to estate views, explore the Lake District and Solway Coast, enjoy long dinners together, then return to your private Spa & Entertainment Barn with 6-person hot tub, sauna, arcade, darts and TV.

Created for families and friends to slow down, celebrate, reconnect and enjoy something a little extraordinary together.

🕰️ THE CLOCKTOWER HOUSE AT WHITEHALL ESTATE

Some places feel different from the moment you arrive.

Set in the Cumbrian countryside, The Clocktower House is a Grade II-listed former coach house and stables, built in 1861 and designed by renowned Victorian architect Anthony Salvin.

Today, it's a private Cumbrian retreat for up to 12 guests, with six individually designed bedrooms, generous spaces for gathering and your own Spa & Entertainment Barn with a 6-person hot tub, sauna, arcade, darts and TV.

Clocktower isn't simply a base for exploring Cumbria. The house itself is part of the holiday.

Slow breakfasts. Walks through the estate. Afternoons in the spa. Dinner for 12. BBQs and evenings around the fire pit.

Because sometimes the best reason to go away is simply getting everyone in the same place again.

🛁 YOUR PRIVATE SPA & ENTERTAINMENT BARN

Just beside the house is a separate Spa & Entertainment Barn, exclusively for your group.

You'll have:

• 6-person hot tub
• 4–6 person sauna
• Arcade machine
• Darts
• TV
• Bathrobes and dedicated spa towels

Everyone holidays differently. Some might relax in the hot tub or sauna while others play darts, take on the arcade or watch a match.

Children, parents, grandparents and friends can enjoy the same space without everyone having to do the same thing.

And if the Cumbrian weather has other ideas, there's still plenty to make a day of at Clocktower.

🍽️ A HOUSE THAT ACTUALLY WORKS FOR 12

This mattered to us.

Clocktower doesn't simply have enough beds for 12. We've tried to make sure it works properly when all 12 of you are here.

The large dining table seats everyone together, while the spacious kitchen has plenty of preparation space and is equipped for group stays, including air fryers, a Nespresso coffee machine and cocktail-making equipment.

After dinner, settle into the living room with its 65-inch TV or stay around the table a little longer.

There's room to come together and room to spread out.

🛏️ SIX INDIVIDUALLY DESIGNED BEDROOMS

Clocktower sleeps up to 12 guests across:

• 3 king bedrooms
• 3 double bedrooms
• TV in every bedroom
• 3.5 bathrooms
• Quality mattresses and bedding
• Fresh professionally prepared linen

High ceilings, large windows and generous proportions retain the character of the original Victorian building while giving everyone their own space at the end of the day.

🏛️ PART OF A MUCH OLDER STORY

Set within historic Whitehall Estate, whose story stretches back to medieval Cumbria, The Clocktower House was built in 1861 as the estate's coach house and stables.

Its distinctive clock tower, sandstone architecture, old cobbles, high ceilings and large windows remain very much part of the experience today.

We've kept that sense of history while creating somewhere comfortable for the way families and groups want to stay now.

Historic architecture outside. Individually designed interiors within.

It's an unusual combination.

🌿 SLOW DOWN

One of the things photographs struggle to capture about Clocktower is the peace.

Wake up surrounded by the estate and Cumbrian countryside, with birds outside and occasionally cattle or sheep in the nearby fields.

Take a stroll along the road through the estate, passing old buildings and open fields, or sit outside with your morning coffee and simply enjoy having nowhere you need to be.

You don't have to fill every day here.

Sometimes staying in can be every bit as enjoyable as going out.

⛰️ EXPLORE CUMBRIA & THE LAKES

When you do head out, there's plenty within reach.

Caldbeck and the Northern Fells are around 20 minutes away, with High Pike, Carrock Fell and The Howk offering everything from fell walks to waterfalls, a limestone gorge and old mill ruins.

Head further into the Lakes for Keswick, Bassenthwaite and Skiddaw, or make a day of some of the Lake District's most famous landscapes, including Scafell Pike and the central fells.

In another direction you'll find Cockermouth, traditional Cumbrian villages and the Solway Coast.

Walk the fells. Explore a village. Find a country pub for lunch. Or simply see where the day takes you.

🍴 EAT & DRINK LOCALLY

You don't have to cook every meal yourself.

Nearby, Greenhill Hotel offers another option for lunch, dinner or drinks — particularly useful for celebrations or when the whole group simply wants someone else to do the cooking.

We're also happy to share our local recommendations for pubs, restaurants and places worth discovering during your stay.

🔥 BBQs, COBBLES & EVENINGS OUTSIDE

When the weather is good, Clocktower moves outside.

Gather around the picnic tables, get the gas BBQ going and enjoy the countryside around you.

Later, light the wood-burning fire pit, pour a drink and settle in for the evening.

There's also parking for up to six cars and an EV charger.

🏢 CORPORATE & LONGER STAYS

Clocktower also works well for project teams, business travellers and longer corporate stays.

Six separate bedrooms, generous living and dining spaces, TVs in every bedroom, parking for up to six vehicles and EV charging make it a comfortable alternative to multiple hotel rooms.

And at the end of the working day, there's plenty of space to switch off and relax.

For longer stays, please get in touch to discuss your requirements.

🥂 MADE FOR GETTING EVERYONE TOGETHER

Birthdays. Family celebrations. Reunions. Multi-generational holidays. Weekends away with friends.

Clocktower was created for those occasions when getting everyone together is the important part.

Some days you might leave early to explore the Lakes and return tired and happy at the end of the day. Other days, you may decide there's no reason to go anywhere at all.

More than 160 years after it was built, this old Cumbrian coach house has a new purpose:

Bringing people together.

Come for Cumbria. Stay for The Clocktower House.

Other things to note:

A £500 security deposit will be pre-authorised on your card shortly before check-in. This is not a charge and will only be taken if damage is identified following your stay.

A 7kW EV charger is available at the property. EV charging is charged separately and is not included in the accommodation rate. If you would like to use the charger during your stay, please let us know and we'll provide the access and charging instructions.
