A little piece of Megalong Valley history
I feel so relaxed just going down the driveway to Willenber Farm. As the house comes into view and the paddocks open up around you, there’s an immediate sense of leaving the everyday behind and settling into the quiet of the valley.

Dating from 1901, Willenber Farm is a beautiful historic cottage that has been thoughtfully restored and extended, bringing its early Federation-era character together with spacious, comfortable modern living.

Set among open paddocks and the quiet landscape of the valley, this three-bedroom, three-bathroom farmhouse sleeps up to six guests. It’s a place to settle in, light the fire, watch the changing light across the cliffs and reconnect with the people you’ve come with.

Old meets new
The original cottage has been carefully restored, preserving its character and connection to the valley’s history, while a contemporary extension creates a generous kitchen, dining and living space.

There are two living areas, each with its own combustion fireplace, with plenty of wood provided for your stay. The cosy living room in the original part of the cottage is made for winter evenings, while the newer living area is perfect for gathering around the fire, sharing a meal or simply settling in for a long conversation.

The kitchen combines modern convenience with a nod to the past. It has an induction cooktop, oven, coffee machine and everything you need to cook for your group, alongside the original cast-iron “The Younger” wood-burning cooking stove, manufactured in Sydney by G. Fletcher & Son. The stove is no longer in use, but remains a beautiful piece of the cottage’s history.

At the heart of the dining area is a beautiful, huge solid-timber table that has been carefully restored — a wonderful place for long lunches, shared dinners and lingering conversations.

In warmer weather, huge sliding doors open the living and dining spaces to the verandah and outdoors, creating an easy connection with the garden and paddocks and allowing the valley breezes to flow through the house.

Three bedrooms, three bathrooms
Willenber Farm has three bedrooms, each with a comfortable queen bed, sleeping up to six guests.
Two bedrooms have their own ensuite bathrooms, with a third bathroom serving the main house. All three bathrooms have walk-in showers, toilets and vanities. There are no baths.

The house has reverse-cycle ducted heating and cooling throughout, so it remains comfortable in every season. NBN Wi-Fi is also available, allowing you to stay connected even though mobile reception in the valley can be limited.

Life on the verandah
The classic Australian wrap-around verandah is one of the best places to experience Willenber Farm.
There are several spots to sit, read, enjoy a morning coffee or share a drink while watching the world go by. There’s also outdoor dining and a BBQ on the verandah, making it easy to enjoy meals outside when the weather is right.

The area beside the second living room is a favourite in the evening. As the sun sets, the cliffs of Narrowneck gradually change colour, creating a beautiful backdrop as the valley settles into the evening.

Mornings can bring mist drifting through the valley, often clearing as the day warms. By evening, the paddocks can come alive with kangaroos moving through the grass, while birds provide a constant soundtrack. Keep an eye out and you may even spot a wombat.

It’s the sort of place where the wildlife, changing light and quiet surroundings become part of your stay.

A little history
Willenber Farm is significant as one of the historic pise cottages of the Megalong Valley, reflecting the simple construction methods and rural character of the valley’s early community.

The original cottage dates from 1901, with a tearoom addition from the 1920s. A post office once operated from a room beneath the verandah, and the property is associated with John Kirby, a member of one of the earliest families in the Megalong Valley.

The cottage has now been carefully restored and thoughtfully extended, allowing its history to remain part of the experience while providing the comfort expected of a modern country retreat.

Explore the Megalong Valley
There’s plenty to discover without leaving the valley. Visit Dryridge Estate or Megalong Valley Estate for local wine, enjoy breakfast or lunch at the much-loved Megalong Valley Tea Rooms, or make a booking at Lot 101, a beautiful 600-hectare farm and home to Megalong Restaurant, where seasonal, farm-grown produce is transformed into a paddock-to-plate dining experience beneath the dramatic valley escarpments.

For weddings at Dryridge Estate, Willenber Farm is only around 4 km away, making it particularly convenient for wedding guests.

Good to know
The Megalong Valley is wonderfully remote, which is part of its charm. The closest shops and fuel are in Blackheath, around 15 km away, so we recommend stocking up and filling the car before heading down into the valley.

The final approach is along a graded, unsealed gravel driveway. It is a standard rural driveway and is suitable for most vehicles. However, low cars may find the driveway difficult.

There is parking for at least four cars, although there is no undercover parking and no EV charger.
There are a couple of small steps onto the verandah, but the house itself is flat throughout.

A digital door lock makes arrival simple, so you can settle in without the need for a physical key.

There is a laundry room with a washing machine and dryer.
