The Datai Langkawi

It’s no doubt one of the best hotels in entire Malaysia and so I can only compare it to the other best, like O&O (Mandwrin oriental now), Taaras, Oberoi, Sipadan Kapalai and similar. The room was amazing, not only comfortable and aesthetically pleasing, but also it had those extra touches like Malaysian encyclopaedia, bath candles and so on. So basically staying in the hotel it’s an experience in its own. The area is fantastic, a real rainforest with wild animals, such as calugo and mouse deer. There is also a bit of a coral reef, which is a rarely in langkawi. Architecture, man made features such as a toilet with the frog pond, a buggy ride thru the forest — all add to the ultimate experience.

There are unfortunately a few things that comparing to other 5 star hotels I didn’t like. Firstly, my non refundable booking started with a harsh email stating that if I don’t present the same card I booked with at the check in, I can be denied staying. What rule is that, when the room had been already paid! Also, I find it wasn’t the best marketing tool to make you feel welcomed. Secondly, my daughter woke up with a rash, all her upper body was covered with something that looked like bites/pimples, and also itchy areas of something that looked like hives. We are no new to the jungle and hiked thru Taman Negara or Endau romping, but never had anything like that. What upset me though was how dismissing receptionist was. He gave us a some calming lotion and said that if it’s not better we need to call a doctor from the centre of the island. I got an impression that it’s a very common occurrence and the staff are used to that. Then get an in-house nurse, or someone who can at least listens and assures you it’s nothing serious, I am sure for the price hotel charges it’s very viable. So instead of guests being worried what can possibly be wrong, some medical attendant can quickly reassured a nervous person that it’s not lethal. Might also be a good idea to keep something against sand flies, as there are present on the beach further away in front of abandoned andaman . The last thing I didn’t like which is completely unrelated to Datai would be deep regret that Andaman , the hotel next door, burnt down, as in my opinion it was a better place for families with kids.

The property is 33 years but kept so well. Our rainforest pool villa looks brand new. We love the location of the property which is in the rainforest and far away from the other hotels.

There is nothing I don’t like about it.

Good place. Good environment. Good food from The Pavillion and good pizza from the beach club.

The facilities is old and lack of maintenance. The wooden floor in the room is cracked and sharp, dangerous for kids to walk around. The 3 pin plug in the room is malfunction even though have fixed by technician once.
