I've just spent a lovely week at Villa San Martino, and it’s one of those places you leave already thinking about when you might return.
The property is rustic in the best possible way — an understated villa set in beautiful, peaceful grounds, with a large pool at its heart. The setting is the real star and provides a wonderfully relaxed base for exploring Puglia.
There are two very different dining experiences. The Villa’s collaboration with Bros includes a high-end gastronomic restaurant that is very much an experience. Alternatively, the elegant but unfussy Trattoria serves excellent traditional Italian food on a lovely outdoor patio.
What really made my stay, though, was the staff. Maria, Matteo, Sophia, the breakfast gentleman and Julia (sp), the property manager, were all warm, attentive and genuinely welcoming without ever being intrusive. I felt completely at home.
The Villa is about 10 minutes from Martina Franca and is ideally positioned for exploring the surrounding hill towns, vineyards, masserias and coast. A car is essential. For local food, I particularly enjoyed La Pasteria, Origini and Pizzeria Da Gianna, just three minutes from the Villa.
One final point: Villa San Martino shouldn’t really be judged against an American-style five-star hotel. Puglia is more rustic, authentic and experiential, and the Villa reflects that beautifully. If you want polished New York or Miami-style luxury, this may not be for you. If you value character, beautiful surroundings, great food and genuine hospitality, it delivers extremely well.
I rate Villa San Martino very highly and would absolutely return. Its greatest charm is that it feels authentically Puglian rather than trying to be something it isn’t.

Loved staying at this hotel which is conveniently close to the center (by car) and yet once inside the gates the peace and tranquility is most welcome. Staff were all helpful and most willing to assist. The home from home feel was most welcome

The beautiful building and interior, so traditional and Italian in lovely gardens .
The room and bed was very comfortable .
With everything we needed
The reception staff spoke good English and were very helpful
The breakfast was the worst I’ve ever had.
It was a joke and we gave up after 2 mornings.
No teaspoons (to eat yoghurt)
To order tea or coffee was hilarious.. hot milk in a teapot !! No cold milk for cereal (only cornflakes on offer)
You could order scrambled eggs, all doused with salt and inedible. No bread.
Staff running around not having a clue what they’re doing or caring about the guests
.. I could just go on but I got bored with it all and didn’t bother.
The grounds looks tatty and need some tlc
