Unique Vintage 1880’S “Garden Cottage” in Mendocino Village
About this cottage rental
Located in Mendocino, this charming cottage for $225 per night is a fantastic choice for your next trip. Treat your loved ones to a totally unique and fun experience along the very special Northern Coast of Caliifornia, and particularly in the Historic Village of Mendocino. It starts with a lumber mill cottage from the 1880’s that still maintains its historical character, and yet, is lovingly updated to fit the warmth, comfort, privacy and entertainment requirements of modern day Mendocino living and vacationing. Walk to everything, fine restaurants, casual cafes, functional and clever shopping, both commercial and organic grocery stores, plus a local farmers market, beaches, pub, Headland Trails, Mendocino Art Center, or walk over to the Mendocino Theater Company for the current play offering. How about just relaxing for hours and hours and hours, or laying on the grass on a southern facing exposure. Listen to the foghorns, or listen to the nothingness, watch the birds and the boats. In addition to the Indoor Master Bathroom with Tub and Shower, take advantage of the additional outdoor fun and private shower in the garden. Make Rhubarb Pie with fresh rhubarb from the back yard, or just sit in the garden hot tub, morning, noon and night. This spot is the center of The Mendocino Universe. Let those nighttime lit up star-studded skies seep into your soul and come back as you need. Let you dogs explore everything, or just laze on the deck in the back yard. This is a unique property in a unique setting. A true Old World Mendocino Property dating back to the 1800's, both in reality and feeling. In addition to our feedback via vrbo, you can scroll towards the bottom here, just prior to the photos, and find our over 130 feedbacks left in our visitor comments book at the cottage. The property is 47 feet by 160 feet. On the front part of the property sits two separate buildings with a breezeway between them. In one of the buildings is the master bedroom with a queen bed and sitting area. Right next to this bedroom, just a few feet away, with its own door for privacy, is the small bedroom set up mostly for children. That bedroom is great for young children and babies, keeps them close, but separate and private. It has a low single full length bed and a childs sleeping loft. Included in this building is the master bathroom with shower and tub. Across the breezeway is the kitchen and living room. The living room and kitchen are both heated by a wood burning stove as well as a propane wall heater. Firewood is provided. The living room has a 40 inch Sony XBR Flat screen HD TV with satellite. It has a Blue-Ray DVD Player, which also receives free NETFLIX Streaming movies. It has Wireless Internet. Upstairs over the living room is a sleeping loft with a double bed and window facing south with ocean view. The garden also has a private outdoor shower, next to the hot tub plumbed with hot and cold water. Such a delight!! Once you are in the hot water, the shower is even great in the winter. Speaking of winter, those can be some of the best times. If you hit it right, you might get a really big storm that will bring you right down to the elements, rich in depth, and wonderful in its nurturing power. There is a deck with patio table and chairs, along with a barbeque and hot tub. Every year we have a fairly large cadre of repeat customers. Generally speaking, couples and families are the ones most drawn to the intimacy of this setting and cottage. It can handle up to 5 adults and 1 child or 1 adult and 5 children, and variations between. We are always working on the property behind the scenes, upgrading, adding services, and generally making it more delightful and user friendly. We started a guest log about 10 years ago. We copied the visitors comments onto this web site. When people write reviews, they mostly write in the book at The Cottage. So, to recap it all, If you are looking for a really comfy and down to earth home, centrally located, with all the modern amenities, ocean views, comfortable outside garden, with easy access to everything, with a multitude of sleeping possibilities, hot tub, embraces dogs, has character that dates back to the 1880's, is very private, and is in The Village (which we feel is the best choice for vacationing and visiting the area), is easy for couples, as well as for families, it is our pleasure to offer 'Garden Cottage'. As a side note, the website is listing us as 12 hours to respond to requests. That is a glitch, I am always on my cell phone and generally respond within minuets unless I am driving, etc. Always within an hour. Keywords: Cottage, House, Garden, Mendocino Vacation Rental

This incredible property made our family of four all very happy- both in the rain and the sun. The house is very cozy and the various sitting areas have coast and headlands views. We enjoyed hot tub and outdoor shower. Kitchen was well equipped.

Rustic but very clean and great location. It's a wonderful place for our special furry friend.

We really enjoyed our stay in what we thought of as little hobbit houses…the yard was great for our little one and we loved the hot tub. The location was great for a vacation where once we arrived no one wanted to drive! We love Mendocino!

Comfortable, quaint, family-friendly, pet-friendly Mendocino home. 2 minute walk to the trails and 2 minute walk to town. Would definitely return.

This is our second year staying at the cottage. Our family loves it. It is our favorite place to stay in the area and we have stayed in many different properties over the years. I can't emphasize what a special place this is. Ron (the host) is so easy to work with and the property is an absolute jewel. We will be back next year.

We visited with our two dogs, who loved the large, fenced yard. The historic homes retained their old-world charm, but with all the amenities. A simple but lovely retreat.

From the moment you walk into this wonderful home, you are wrapped in the peace of its character and soul. It is abundantly evident how much care and affection the owners have invested. The bed is very comfortable, the kitchen well stocked, and the home is configured with every comfort in mind.
If you have the chance to stay this gem…TAKE IT!

We had a lovely time at the Garden Cottage in Mendocino! Cozy, beautiful views, relaxing days - what more could you ask for? Bed is very comfortable and the kitchen has everything you could need. Walking through the ivy-covered gate is the closest thing you can get to staying in a Secret Garden, or perhaps the Shire!

Idyllic place to stay to celebrate an anniversary. Peaceful, beautiful, and well-maintained. Easy walk to everything, including the bluff trail. Can’t wait to return!

The location of this place is superb. Easy to enter. Parking is easy. You will love the outdoor space. Nice sitting area. We loved the jacuzzi. It was clean and we felt very comfortable using it. The outdoor shower was also charming. The ocean view from the property was wonderful especially from the loft bedroom.
It just felt like a magical place away from home. The beds were comfortable as well. We slept well which is super important when travelling. Thank you for having us.

The property is immaculate and the landscaping is stunning. The property owner was very gracious when I called him because I forgot the code to the door. The homes are exactly as described. Quaint and adorable. The place is outfitted with everything you might possibly need. Added to the wonderful vacation. Will definitely stay here again!!!

Beautiful property and gardens. It fit 3 adults comfortably in both the loft and Queen cottage. The hot tub was great. The outdoor shower was a surprise bonus that we used daily instead of the indoor shower. Watching the ocean on a full moon from the loft was a magical evening. We will definitely return.

Wow! I cannot say enough about this incredibly magical rental in the quaint town Mendocino.
As soon as we opened the gate and looked into the garden, it took our breath away. It feels like a secret garden, and because we happened to visit in May, everything was blooming. The rental itself had a certain kind of charm that made it feel like we stepped back in time. My husband and I really love old houses so we enjoyed all the little things that made the spot so unique. As a family of five (3 kids 10 and under) we were very comfortable and our kids were over joyed to sleep in the lofts. Our dogs enjoyed the fully secure fenced in yard and we loved the hot tub. The house was clean and had everything that we needed. The location was unbeatable. We didn’t get in our vehicle once the whole weekend and we were able to stroll to town to eat and shop as well as walk to the gorgeous point and small beach just a block away. Ron, (the owner) and I spoke on the phone when I booked the place and we ended up chatting for quite a long time. He was so warm and hospitable as well as completely available for any questions I had. We look forward to revisiting this spot time, and time again.

I've stayed at the Garden Cottage on several occasions. It's in town, close to everything. You can park your car and leave it unused if you don't bother to venture outside the town. It's got a very large grass area, all enclosed, great for dogs to romp around in. It takes getting used to, the way the buildings are arranged - bed and bath in one building, kitchen, dining, and living in another, but it's not really that much of a bother. The kitchen is well equipped, though no dishwasher. Overall, a fun place to stay.

We were charmed by this property and would love to stay here again. The location was ideal for walks to the village and the headlands. We especially loved the unique decor combined with the modern appliances. The bedroom was cozy and comfortable, and the kitchen and living area were comfortable as well. It was nice to have two separate buildings in case someone needed a little privacy. We would love to stay here again.

Let’s start with the good things:
This rental is located in an ideal location, right in between the shops in town and the Headlands.
We could walk everywhere and enjoyed being in the heart of Mendocino.
The drawbacks:
This house is in need of maintenance. The furniture in the dining room and living room were not comfortable.
The living room needs a fresh coat of paint and the carpet should be replaced.
The neighbor next door feeds the raccoons and they get very active at night. We did not feel okay to use the hot tub at night because of the raccoon activity. Also, they ran across the roof at night and it was creepy.
Additionally, the bedroom window does not seal and I woke up several nights with ants in my face.
In general, this rental would probably work for a two night stay, but if you are in town for longer than that, I’d keep looking.

Comfortable beds for everyone. Host was responsive. Two blocks to the headlands trail, and a five minute walk to the grocery/downtown Mendocino. The loft bed is best for a child, and the attic bed is best for kids or agile adults. Loved the outdoor shower after retuning from bicycle trips. Would return here on a future Mendocino trip.

What a fun find in a perfect location. We loved the quaint, rustic, cozy feel to both the cottages and the garden. There are views of the ocean from the yard, and and enjoying the outdoor space early in the morning and stargazing in the hot tub at night were just lovely. I am prone to back and neck pain and these beds and pillows were super comfy. The rooms warmed nicely with the heater, we had everything we needed in the kitchen, and we were happy to get to watch our favorite show on Netflix while on vacation. The split cottages with bath/bedrooms in one and kitchen/dining/living in the other as described in the listing may not be for all families/groups--perhaps it wouldn't work so well with another adult who wants their own indoor bathroom, or families with younger kids or people who shouldn't be climbing loft ladders at night (there is one single and one full sized bed that are not lofted), but we really liked the unique set up, and it worked perfectly for our family. And of course the location--only one block from the ocean and the main part of town--just can't be beat. Thank you for a great stay.

Chilly in January, 1 bedroom window broken, and windows don’t seal at lower edge; moldy shower. Need to crawl in loft beds. Fireplace not working. Nightlight not working. No curtain on shower window.

I can’t say enough nice things about this cozy, rustic place or about Ron, the property manager. Everything was exactly as described if not better. We booked another stay in a few months before we had even checked out.
My husband and I traveled with our 15 month old daughter and active medium sized dog. I particularly appreciated the separate bedroom cottage— was the perfect spot to tuck in and read a book by the fire. My husband cooked up a storm in the well equipped kitchen— the stove is particularly nice. Our baby loved to crawl around in the grassy yard, and all of us loved the view of the ocean. Both of us work remotely and were able to do what we needed over the wifi, although the signal is much stronger from the living room cottage than the bedroom cottage and if you’re somebody who has to upload audio or video files you might want to walk to one of the many nearby coffee shops for a faster upload.
There are two beds that can sleep couples, although one is in a loft up a ladder and wouldn’t be appropriate for people with physical limitations. The other sleeping areas are a twin bed and a comfortable couch. There were plenty of linens and towels and blankets available for chilly nights.
The hot tub was perfect. The outdoor seating area was also in a nice sunny spot. The grill worked great.
Can’t wait to come back!

Our family of three - two adults and a six year old boy - had a great long weekend in Mendocino at this lovely, charming cottage.
The location cannot be beat! Walk to dinner, cafes for coffee, interesting trails for walking on the bluffs and some local attractions.
The backyard was a beautiful oasis, complete with luscious plants, perfectly HOT hottub and some ocean views. We loved dipping in the hottub with morning coffee, some afternoons during a little rain and evenings after a day's adventure.
The cabin(s) have all you could want/need for a stay on the coast. We were warm and dry, even though it was a stormy weekend.
Upon leaving, I wanted to see if we can book this cabin again during the Summer!!

My family and I have stayed at many locations in the village over the last ten years or so, and this property is hands-down the most quintessential, versatile, perfectly located, dog-friendly, kid friendly and above all, beautiful place we’ve been. Can’t recommend highly enough, especially if you love historic structures, beautiful gardens, hot tubs and outdoor showers! Having two buildings was great for our kiddo to be napping next door while we relaxed in the dining room across the breezeway. Hope the wood stove is back in action soon, though we heat our house with wood and can totally understand not handing matches to just anyone…
Thank you for sharing your space!! We’ll be back again and again.
