About this house rental

From it's private deck, enjoy the views of Sandy Bay dotted with sailboats. Or, walk down the quiet lane to Granite Pier and experience the unsurpassed views of the sun rising over the Atlantic Ocean, and of fishing boats moored nearby. The full moon over Granite Pier is spectacular, and even locals come here to experience its glow. Just steps away at Granite Pier (about 120 yards from the house,) you can launch your kayak or Stand Up Paddle board and explore the coastline. Atlantic Vacation Homes rents kayaks and SUPS so just inquire. Granite Cottage is a charming vacation rental located in Rockport's quaint Pigeon Cove neighborhood. From the parking area, walk up about 10 steps to its private deck with water views and enter the cathedral ceilinged home. In it's history, the cottage was the blacksmith's shed where where the oxen, working the nearby granite quarries, were shod. Vestiges can be seen throughout the house and in the courtyard once the floor of the oxen barn. The open-plan living room/dining room/kitchen has high ceilings and a skylight. The main living area flows past the kitchen to the Queen bedroom with a/c and full bath. The cottage affords plenty of peace and privacy, with thick stone walls and all windows and doors opening onto the ocean-view deck or to the courtyard. Steps away is Little Parker Pit, a freshwater quarry for that early morning wake up swim or afternoon refresher. This house can be rented with the adjacent property, Granite Pier, for larger groups.

The location of this rental is beautiful, overlooking Granite Pier and the water. We loved sitting on the deck, walking down to the pier in the morning with our little one, and the ease of getting to town (it’s walkable, but a little harrowing to cross the narrow bridge around a curve with no real sidewalk, so we only did the walk once). The washer and dryer in such a small place were greatly appreciated. The property itself is cute—love the skylight and the big casement window in the bedroom!— but in need of a little love. Half of the windows won’t open, which means it’s hard to catch those ocean breezes and it’s necessary to run the AC a lot of the time. But the AC units are old, and the one in the bedroom produced a mildew odor that filled the small cottage when it was on. The outdoor furniture is on its last legs, and the fridge is pretty old—it leaked on the floor one day and froze some of our veggies, but it did keep the beer cold! Note: this is a much better place for adults than young children. There’s a steep flight of stairs off the deck that is also the main entrance to the property, and riding herd on an 18-month-old was anxiety-producing. As another guest mentioned, the couch is the kind you slide off if you sit on it for very long, and the entrance door is a little tricky to find. Make sure to follow the directions provided, and not Google!

We weren't told where the door was with the push-button lock. I fell upon entering because there is a step down upon entering with no warning. You cannot open a window for cross-ventilation, The pull-down blind on the patio door fell off and cut my wife's hand. The pull-down blind in the bedroom had to be hand-rolled up and down each morning and night, The umbrella on the patio is broken. The vent in the bathroom doesn't work. The couch is so slippery that after sitting on it for 20 minutes or so the cushions slide out and must be pushed back in place. The other tenants parked in front of our entrance way. The tv was impossible to figure out.

We enjoyed the location of the cottage because we had family in Pigeon Cove and near Old Garden Beach. It was easy to walk to downtown, front and back beach, Little Parker’s quarry and to Pigeon Cove. The cottage is very small and the bedroom is right on Granite St. However, a window fan or the a/c blocks out street noise. The kitchen is well appointed and the pullout couch is very comfortable. The deck is nice.
