We checked in after leaving Funchal. Porto Moniz is a beautiful place to visit, even if it comes with a premium price tag. The hotel was excellent—our room was comfortable, clean, and had great water pressure, and breakfast was excellent. The location is very central; it's just a 5-minute walk to both the paid and free natural pools.
Although we arrived early at 11 a.m. knowing check-in was at 3 p.m., our arrival experience was disappointing. The mature woman at the front desk was unwelcoming and intimidating, addressing us in a condescending manner while explaining the check-in policy, restroom location, and luggage storage. It was frustrating to see her treat the previous guest warmly, only to change her demeanor with us. It certainly dampened our spirits. Thankfully, the other staff members were excellent, accommodating, and much more welcoming.
