Having read some of the most recent reviews I did wonder whether I had been staying at a different hotel! But many of my comments have been mentioned throughout the last few years, with seemingly very little change by the hotel.
This properly, is trading on the promise of a bygone era but does not deliver what you would expect of a 4 star hotel.
Whilst clean and spacious, service was inconsistent and on occasions rude and unhelpful, particularly night staff on reception.
Guest rooms are large but mattresses are hard and uncomfortable, bathrooms need updating and the replenishment of complimentary amenities could not be relied on. Indeed it felt like these were being provided minimally and on the cheap, as we received only 1 free small bottle of water during our 5 days and when we did receive clean cups or glasses, they were only paper or plastic.
One of the most disappointing elements was that many of the public areas and bars were shut up and obviously unused. The only exception being the central courtyard. While this was attractive to look at and served for refreshments, it was typically used by smokers, making it an unpleasant atmosphere to sit in.
In short there was no truly comfortable space, inside or outside, to return to and relax, after walking around Palermo. The hotel lacked any welcoming ambiance, beyond the architectural details.
The best part of the hotel is unquestionably its location. Central to the old town and the many bars and restaurants that surround it.
But for the price, there are other hotels nearby that probably offer better value for money and a more comfortable and welcoming stay.
